5 Year Old Fractured Ankle Help

Can a 4 year old broken ankle, possibly fractured, still be successfully fixed by surgery?

time to see doc, get x-ray like was already suggested. chances are good that there is a surgical repair that can fix the damage. that said, joint surgery/recovery is very painful also. granted, having pain 4 yrs after a break would make anyone want resolution & surgery is probably your best choice. at this point, not sure physical therapy would do enough good without surgery first. that's something you'd need after surgery. i had knee surgery 3 months after a bad fall & it took me 8 months to recover, but no regrets... i can walk just fine. i had shoulder surgery 6 yrs after another bad fall & that was an extremely painful recovery, but it saved the use of my arm, so i have no regrets. had nose surgery after (yep) another fall & had absolutely no problems with that at all. if you have surgery, expect pain, DO what the doctor says, DO what the physical therapist says (and GO to the therapy appts). if you're miserable this long after a break and opt to have it repaired, then follow thru with whatever the recovery requires & get it done.

5 year old fractured ankle please help !!??

Ok so it's been exactly 8 days since my son fell from his bike and fractured his ankle. He was in severe pain for the first week but the doctor said he needed To make more X-rays in three days from now to compare and see how bad it was fractured. They have him a boot cast for his foot but wasn't able to walk for three days. After the third day he started walking with the boot cast. He was really comfortable with it and had no problems walking. He's been going to school and doing just fine. Today I walked into his room and he had the boot off. I don't know how bad the fracture was so I got angry with him. He said nothing hurts and started walking around without it to show me. I made him put on the boot once again but could the doctors be wrong about my son fracturing his ankle? He has been running and even when I get upset about it he just says mom my foot is ok now. He has a doctor appointment three days from now should I make him wear the boot anyways ? He's really upset and doesn't want to wear it anymore. I do believe that he has no pain since he stopped complaining about pain 5 days after the incident .. Any advice ?

Help! My 2 year old fractured his leg...?

I would go back to the doctor and question the need for such a large cast. The info below is from www.orthoinfo.org

"Toddler's Fracture
A toddler (one to three years of age) can fracture the shinbone when he or she trips over a toy or falls down a stair while learning to walk. These fractures usually do not break the skin, and the bone stays fairly well-aligned. There will be acute pain and possibly some swelling. The toddler may refuse to get up and walk again. The area of the fracture may be very tender.
It may be difficult to see this type of fracture on an X-ray, and your physician may request a bone scan to verify the diagnosis. These fractures heal quickly and can be treated with only a short leg weightbearing cast."

That last line about the type of cast must mean that it might be possible to go smaller! Good luck to you and your little boy.

HELP! I fractured my ankle and I need it to heal...quick!?

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.

So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.

Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.

A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.

Heal your ankle fully & fast?

Fractured Ankle- Still Hurts/ Slipped on Ice?

I am 15 years old, and on August 30th, I fell down the stairs, and couldn't walk on my ankle. I went to Doctor's Express, and they told me it was sprained, so I was given crutches. 3 days later, I still couldn't walk on it, so I was given a walking boot for 3 weeks. When I got it off, I was given a brace for some extra support.

October, my ankle started to buckle and bother me. I went to Children's Hospital where they took more X-rays, and told me my ankle was in fact, fractured. I was given another walking boot for 3 weeks, and was ordered to take Physical Therapy. 3 weeks later, I went for a follow-up, and got my boot off, and was told to continue to wear the brace for 5 more weeks.

At first, my ankle felt better, but lately, it's bothering me again. Time is up with wearing the brace, but I'm afraid to stop wearing it, and injure myself again.

I have a follow up appointment tomorrow. I am continuing physical therapy, and they think I am doing well. Should I be worried that I am not completely healed?

Also- today it snowed. There was just a coating on the ground, but it was cold out. I was walking in the street to my house, and I slipped on the ice and fell on my butt. (Don't laugh- it hurt!) Right now, I'm sitting on the couch with my foot elevated and ice on it. I took some alieve about an hour ago. My whole leg is bothering me, and my ankle is throbbing. Should I be worried that I hurt it again?

HELP please!

HELP!! My 5 year old has sprained her ankle i think.Should I take her to the hospital or just bandage her leg?

I would take her to a walk-in clinic or to her pediatrician before I would subject a 5 year old to a hospital environment. Is she is severe pain? You have to be very careful with ankle injuries....if she can't put her weight down on it, it is likely to be broken or a severe sprain--either of which will require a cast or brace....not just an ace bandage.

I should know...I've had multiple ankle injuries in my life. Once, I hyperextended my right ankle while running--my shoe slipped off the edge of the sidewalk as I was passing someone. I thought it was just a bad sprain and did not seek treatment immediately--I just iced it and wrapped it up. A day later, my foot was so swollen I couldn't put a shoe on and could not put the slightest bit of weight on it. My heel (the talus) was broken in two places and I had ripped 3 tendons loose from the bone. I ended up being out of work for 8 months and having to have a total ankle reconstruction to the tune of about $58,000.

As a mom of three, I would never make my sons sit at home in pain if I was able to take them to the doctor for treatment.

How is my ankle fracture going to heal?

I'm only 14, but i'll try my best to help:-)
On the 7th January i apparently 'sprained' my kneecap, i got given crutches as i couldnt walk, but i swore that my knee had dislocated but nothing was picked up on my X-ray.
On the 8th I returned because i was in so so so much pain but i just got given stronger painkillers.
On the 16th i returned to the hospital for a follow up oppointment, and i showed them how my knee 'shunts and pops' out of place. The doctors then told me that this is called a 'traumatic dislocation' and i need an mri scan, but he never told me why.
On the 4th Feburary i had my mri scan.
On the 1st March i had my results appointment and my consultant told me that infact i had dislocated my kneecap, and my bones collided, as they collided my kneecap fractured, and the fracture had broke off and fell under my kneecap and got lodged into my catilage and i needed surgery to recover.
On the 5th March i had my surgery where i was cut from thigh to shin, and my fracture was screwed back on, it was a painful operation and i needed drugs such a morphine to calm the pain. But now, 16th April and im sort of normal again, walking again after 4 months, back to school, but its still very difficult to walk up stairs and i do get servere aches regularly.

I've never had a bone 'set' but its basically putting broken bones back into place. It can hurt because depending on the severity you can be offered general anesthetic. Don't worry about anything, they wouldn't provide the treatment if it wasn't suitable! Once the bones are placed back together they will naturally fuse back together in 4-6 weeks, but you have to be very careful not to bash it, or bend or flex it or move it around too much as you will just refracture it. It doesn't really make a difference when you get it set! The recovery can get very emotional, but make sure you have painkillers ready, which the doctor should provide such as - Paracetamol, Codine, or even Co-Codamol:-).

When is surgery needed on a fractured ankle and what to expect after surgery?

Not enough to give a complete answer. I broke mine when I was sixteen, but they didn't operate. That indicates that her break must have been worse. August is only 3 months away (less than,) I really doubt it will be healed by then. I'm assuming that she will have the cast off and hopefully the pins removed, but having your lower leg in isolation like that for so long really messes with the muscles, tendons, and ligaments. She should expect a lot of stiffness (big time stiffness) and limping. By the end of August, if she treats her leg right (exercise, nutrition, etc.,) she should be pretty much ready to do most things. All of that is unless she has some kind of spiral break or an almost pulverized ankle, in which case it could be much much longer.

Peter Gerbino is correct. It depends on your pain, your activity level, etc. Immobilization for a hairline fracture is not always recommended if you don't need it. The reason for that, especially because there is tendon involvement, is that immobilization also causes the muscles, tendons, and ligaments to lock up along with the rest of your foot. It can really lower you ankle mobility and that is something you do not want when you are recovering from an injury to your foot. Rest, use ice on the area, use a small tensor band to reduce swelling, and elevate your foot above your heart. Hope this helps; speedy recovery!

Usual time for callus (bridge of new bone between fractured fragments) to form is 4 to 8 weeks , depending on many factors -Age of patient- In children fracture heal early, In old age healing get delayedNutrional status of patient –good nutrients intake help healingType of fracture – Displaced or depressed fracture take more time to heal.Open fracture take more timeInfection delay healing.Presence of cancer delay healing. If patient is taking drugs , alcohal, tobaco that impair inflammation, healing gets delayed.
