What is a brief summary of a book?

To summarize something means to give a short, simplified description of, in this case, the main theme or idea of the book, and then the main ideas that develop that theme. One way to do this would be to ask and answer two questions: (1) What is the one thing this whole book is about (the subject or topic of the book)? (2) What is the book saying about that one thing? Once you answer those two questions in a simple sentence, you have the theme of the book. Then it is a matter to asking and answering “what does the book say about that”? with several supporting sub themes.

What is a brief brief summary of the Odyssey?

Well, the other answers are funny but not really helpful, so here goes:Odysseus, a hero of the Trojan War, takes 9 long years to return home, due to shipwrecks, and encounters with monsters and seductresses, in some part due to obstructions put in his path by the god Poseidon, who was angry at Odysseus. When he returns he finds his home taken over by idle rich men seeking to marry his wife and take over his kingdom because he is assumed dead.  Disguised, he kills all the suitors and is restored to his beloved Penelope, in part with help from the goddess Athena. It is a great story and depending on which translation you read  a pleasure to read, full of wonderfully evocative descriptions.
