A Christmas Memory By Truman Capote Follow Up Questions

What is the conflict in the short story "A Christmas Memory" by Truman Capote?

As Christmas time approaches in rural Alabama, a young boy and his best friend, an elderly woman distantly related to him, prepare for the holiday by gathering ingredients for their annual batch of fruitcakes for 'people who've struck our fancy'. On Christmas Eve, they talk with great anticipation of the next day, but underneath is the sad, almost unspoken knowledge that the boy is growing up and his cousin is getting older and more frail.

Who has read the story "A Christmas Memory" by Truman Capote? Who knows what this phrase means?

In the story, Buddy's friend says, "It's bad enough in life to do without something you want; but confound it, what gets my goat is not being able to give somebody something you want them to have." What does this mean? Do you think her prespective is shaped by being "funny and old?"

Can someone help me paraphrase these quotes? If you just want to help with just one of them then that would be fine :) Thank you! in advance to the people who help :)

"We children, of course, were only vaguely aware of the extent of our poverty. Having no radios, few newspapers, and no magazines we were somewhat unaware of the world outside our community." (Story: Marigolds By Eugenia Collier)

"Friends. Not necesassarily neighbor friends: indeed the larger share is intended for persons we've met maybe once, perhaps not at all. People who have struck our fancy. Like President Roosevelt." (Story: A Christmas Memory By Truman Capote)

"Patricia is gone and I'll never know what happened to the highwayman and Bess, the landlord's daughter. I ask Seamus but he doesn't know any poetry at all especially English poetry." (Story: Angela's Ashes By Frank McCourt)

Is the book/movie "To Kill a Mockingbird" based on a true story?

No, not based on true story. However, the trials of the "Scottsboro Boys" motivated Lee to write TKAM. In 1931, 9 African American young men (ages 13-21) boarded a train for Memphis. Several white men on the train picked a fight with the black men. The black men were then accused of raping 2 white women and arrested immediately. They were named the "Scottsboro Boys" after the town in Alabama where they were first tried. 8 of the 9 were convicted by an all-white jury and sentenced to death. Sound familiar? A few similarities between the "Scottsboro Boys" and TKAM are: they both took place in the 1930's, both occur in Alabama, and both begin with a charge of rape made against a white woman/women against a black man/men.

And, yes, the character Dill is based on Lee's childhood friend Truman Capote.

What is a good thesis statement for the death penalty and it's history?

I had to read a nonfiction book for my English class and I chose to read "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote. So obviously the capital punishment was an issue discussed in the book. My assignment is to write a research paper about an issue discussed in the book (death penalty) and I need help coming up with a thesis statement. It is not so much a for or against type essay, but maybe I could talk about how the history of the death penalty has changed. Either way I need to relate it to the book. HELP!
