The Roman Empire at the time of Christ kept meticulous records. Why then, is there no record of the trial of Jesus?
This Christ Myth argument is presented every once in a while on Quora, usually by atheists who want to dispute the existence of a historical Jesus. I’ve yet to understand how someone so “rational” and so appreciative of “science” as the atheists of Quora have so much difficulty in accepting the consensus of relevant Near East scholars.Nevertheless, yes, the Romans did keep records of trials. Some of them have survived. Many documents survive, like orders to arrest certain individuals, or letters or family records, but not a lot of trial records, and none concerning 1st century AD Judea. But it’s important to remember that the theory of the historical Jesus does not rely at all on Jesus’ record in official Roman documents. The Romans were quite careless about their day-to-day writings, much of which was made on parchment. Parchment really doesn’t keep all that well, and if the event recorded was not considered important enough, the writings may even have been scraped off, so the parchment could have been reused.Much more importantly, a traditional aphorism frequently used by historians is right on the money in this case: absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. No, there are no non-religious contemporary accounts of Jesus. There are no records of his trial. Neither is there for most of the hundreds of milions of people inhabiting the Roman Empire, or even the most important historical figures.Hannibal Barca, for example, (the existence of which Quoran atheists apparantly aren’t as busy disputing), is only mentioned by one contemporary Roman writer, who’s work is lost and only known through quotations in later texts. The main source for Hannibal, then, is Polybius, who started writing almost 50 years after the events he was describing.Jesus, on the contrary, is mentioned by two separate unrelated writers, with Tacitus mentioning him probably within the century of his death. That means you’ve already got more sources for his life and existence than 90% of historical figures.
