A Level Chemistry Homework - Alcohols

Chemistry homework please help!?

1. Explain why many alcohols and phenols can mix with water?
2.Octane is an unbranched alkane of formula C8H18, predict the following :
a.solubility in water
b. sobubility in ligroin
c.combustion charateristics
d.density versus water

Chemistry Homework help?

The first source below says the density of lauryl alcohol is 0.8309 g/ml.
(17.1 g) / (0.8309 g/ml) = 20.58 ml
The second source below says the density of ethanol is 0.789 g/ml.
(185 g) / (0.789 g/ml) = 234.47 ml ethanol

Supposing additive volumes (which is not a very good assumption, but lacking better information...):
(17.1 g C12H25OH) / (186.3354 g C12H25OH/mol) / (20.58 ml + 234.47 ml) =
0.0003598 mol/ml = 0.360 mol/L

[This problem would have been a lot simpler and a lot more accurate if it had asked for the molality. Are you sure you didn't mean that?]

Chemistry homework help please :)?

i have to do this chem homework and i'm kind on stuck on these two questions and i was wondering if someone could please help.

1) The process in which an organic acid and an alcohol react to form an ester and water is known as esterification. Ethyl butanoate (C3H7COOC2H5) an ester is formed when the alcohol ethanol (C2H5OH) and butanoic acid (C3H7COOH) are heated in the presence of sulfuric acid.

C2H5OH(l) + C3H7COOH(l) C3H7COOC2H5(l) + H2O(l)

Determine the mass of ethyl butanoate produced if 3.70 mol of ethanol is used.

2)When copper(II) oxide is heated in the presence of hydrogen gas, elemental copper and water are produced. What mass of copper can be obtained if 28.3 g copper(II) oxide is used?

Thank you so much! :)

A person's blood alcohol (C2H5OH) level can be determined by titrating a sample of blood plasma with a potassium dichromate solution. The balanced reaction is:
16H + 2Cr₂O₇ + C₂H₅OH → 4Cr + 2CO₂ + 11H₂O
If 35.46 mL of 0.05961 M Cr₂O₇ is required to titrate 28.00 g plasma, what is the mass percent of alcohol in the blood.

Consider the boiling points of the following compounds and their solubilities in room-temperature water. Why does the solubilities in water go down as the boiling points of these alcohols go up.
Here's the pic: http://i45.tinypic.com/2zfrds7.jpg

a.Larger molecules are less attracted to one another by induced dipole-induced dipole as well as by dipole-dipole and dipole-induced dipole attractions.
b.As the boiling increases, it is more difficult to keep the alcohol from evaporating out of solution.
c.As the boiling point increases, the size of the alcohol molecules decreases.
d.Larger molecules are more attracted to one another by induced dipole-induced dipole as well as by dipole-dipole and dipole-induced dipole attractions.

Chem homework problem... Help!?

Lauryl alcohol is obtained from coconut oil and is used to make detergents. A solution of 5.00 g of lauryl alcohol in 0.100 kg of Benzene freezes at 4.1 degrees C. What is the molar mass of lauryl alcohol?

Properties of Benzene:
1. Formula Unit = C6H6
2. Molar Mass = 78 g/mol
3. M.P. of (pure) Benzene = 5.5 degrees C
4. Kf of Benzene = 5.12 degrees C/m

Who helps/used to help you do chemistry homework at school?

A few years back, When I was in school, I often got stuck While doing Chemistry homework. My parents were not so expert to help me with my chemistry homework, but fortunately my uncle was with me that time who is well qualified in chemistry. I thank him for being there to help me and make me understand tricky concepts. But, Time has changed now with the evolution of online learning/education. Today, students have no need to worry if there is no chemistry expert near to them. Students can get the best help on reliable websites providing online chemistry homework help.

What should I include in A level research homework about the physical and chemical properties of ethanoic acid?

You may want to include the following topics:acidity + reasons behind itreactions of acetic acid (esterification, formation of acid chloride, …)the reason behind the unusual high boiling point
