A Little Bit Worried About Our New Puppy And Whether Or Not We Should Bring Him To The Vet

Please help! My new puppy won't drink water! And he's scared!?

Please don't be scared. Concerned yes but don't be scared.

Most pet stores get their puppies from commercial dog breeders and many of those are 'puppy mills' who will crate their dogs in cramped, dark and filthy areas. Your puppy likely did not spend 5 months at the pet shop. Likely he was taken there around 2-4 months of age. You can ask the pet shop if you'd like to know. My guess would be by your description that this is a classic puppy mill puppy and he was not at the pet store that long but rather traumatized by the so-called breeder's property. He isn't quite sure what to make of this new found goodness he has in you and it's going to take patience for you to see him through his fear of waiting for the other shoe to drop so to speak.

Additionally, keep in mind that temperament and personality are hereditary and most breeders who don't care where their puppies go (sorry, but as a breeder, I couldn't bear to let a pet shop just let my puppy go to the first person with money.. I need more info than how much is in their wallet - certainly not even close to a dig on you, just the breeder who puts puppies in that risky situation. Your puppy could have just as easily wound up with someone terrible. I'm glad he found you!

First, I'd want a complete checkup done at a vet's office asap.In the meantime, try giving your new baby some pedialyte from a needleless syringe or eyedropper, etc. This will help you be certain he is not getting dehydrated. If his tummy is upset, you can give a tiny bit of pepto bismol or kaeopectate.

I am normally a huge crate training advocate but in this case, I would avoid it for now. He may very well be traumatized by improper cage use.

When reassuring him, rub his shoulder. This is what wolves in their packs do when they wish to convey "you're accepted. You're okay, I'm okay". Just be careful not to appear to be rewarding cowardly behavior or you may accidentally reinforce it. Instead, set him up by asking him to come.. reward him. -- ask him to sit.. reward him (even if you have to gently guide him into the sit position). but for a day or two, just let him explore and relax.

Wishing you and your new baby all the best for many years to come.

Incest puppies due to vet error?

Provided your information is accurate, the Vet should have immediately offered to fix this for free, since he/she made a mistake. Vet's aren't always perfect, but in my opinion what is more concerning is not taking responsibility.

This is what I would do. Tell the Vet there are 2 options. Fix the problem, or read about your situation in the local paper, and who knows where else.

Then get a new Vet. This one only has $$$ on the brain.

I think the vet and your neighbor should also step up to the plate and split the costs for vaccinations, exams, ect..for the puppies, since they share a responsibility in this.

Due to this inbreeding, these guys should be spayed/neutered. This can be done as early as 6 weeks of age.

If there is any money recieved from these puppies, it should be applied to the costs.

You as a good neighbor, and dog lover should help to place the puppies to loving homes.

Best of Luck!!

New puppy, goopy eyes, throwing up, should I be concerned?

Golly....gee...YES!

Know how to dig a grave?

X-rays of pregnant dog showed EITHER 4 or 5 puppies??????

My vet took 2 X-rays of our English Pointer and I'm really worried now because he wasn't sure if there were 4 or 5 puppies coming (and this is her 1st litter and my 1st experience). Do the X-rays sometimes not reveal a sure number of puppies or is he an idiot vet? He said there were 4 for sure, and a possible 5th but he couldn't tell if it was an actual puppy b/c it was in a large area of her body that all looked milky white, whereas the other heads were an obvious white against the dark.

This vet refused an emergency call when I asked him if he'd be willing to be on call, so I've found an emergency vet close by, but the whole reason I got her X-rayed ws to find out how many puppies there were. Now since I still don't know for sure, I won't know if she's truly done after 4 if she stops pushing. Are X-rays sometimes unclear like this??
He also said she'd whelp within 24 hours but it's been 24 hours and she's still happy go lucky w/no sign of labor.

Why does my 5 week old puppy have diarrhea?

It’s quite common for a puppy to have diarrhoea. It’s around time when puppies start wondering and having other than just milk. Unless if it persists, you should not be too worried. Offer it some soaked kibbles and see if it gets better. If not, mix little bit minced chicken breast, soft rice, and/or mushed pumpkin to the kibble. Usually the rice will help stop the diarrhoea and pumpkin helps the poo to form nicely. Since it’s a small puppy. Serve very little at a time unless if u have a whole litter. It is safe to serve to the whole litter and mum.

Help! My Pomeranian may have fractured his little leg?!?

I think he should be fine. I have a Pom too who's always jumping about the place. If you twist your ankle you will definitely limp, right? That doesn't mean it's broken. He's just bruised / soar. You pretty much described the normal amount of time it will take for his swelling to flare up. Just keep monitoring him, add some ice to his leg and smoothly, ever so gently, rub one finger along the hairs on his leg. This will let him know that you understand that he has pain there and he will give you his leg to examine as if you're his Dr. My Pom pulled a basket of clothes on top of himself as I was folding my laundery. He screeched so I dropped everything, leaped to him held him close to my chest and rocked him like a baby. I then laid him on the floor and gave him a nice massage and he was asleep within a minute. He loved it. Now if he get's stuck somewhere or gets scared of a noise, he always runs to me for the same pampering. Just use this as a bonding time with your pup. He will realize that you're there to protect him and and will allow you to fully analyze his leg.

I definitely dont think it's broken though. It would have been apparent when the vet first examined him. Just try to keep him off his feet and pamper him. Don't make him run after you either for a few days. The soarness will pass. If this persists for more than a few days (5 - 7) please bring him in for an X-ray as it really is important. Did you check out your local Petco? Most of them offer vetrinary services as well and is extremely affordable. I don't think they do X-rays there but I'm sure they can recommend a few inexpensive clinics. Good luck to you.

Was the vet being a little rude?

I brought my dog in today, because I was worried she had ring worm. She had a large circular bald spot on her leg. When I walked her into the examining room, I guess I was in the vet's way a little bets and he said "get back" I'm not sure if he said that because he was afraid hed get ring worm if we were too close or what. Than near the end of the visit I tried to point out two small balled spots on her face that I was a little worried about, and he completely ignored me, or he at least didnt say anything. Maybe he didnt realise i wanted him to look at it, and thought maybe i was just making an observation? Idk....I'm probably just over reacting.

I'm really worried about our dog (punctured back of throat)?

You should call the local emergency vet office and explain your situation to them. It probably is ok to let this heal by itself but if she's in a lot of pain you should be able to give her something like benadryl to help her settle/calm down and rest. Give them a call, ask for advice, dosage of benadryl, and other possible treatment. Meanwhile maybe give her ice cubes to lick...the coolness will help ease the pain.

If the vet says they want to see her again then please ask a trusted friend or neighbor to drive you.

Puppy came in somewhat indirect contact with parvo; should I be worried?

Yesterday, my girlfriend and I went to my friend's house to play with his puppy for a while. After about 10 minutes we left.

Since that time, we have taken 2 showers and changed clothes.

Today, my girlfriend and I went to go get HER a puppy, the cutest little 7 week old dachshund you'll ever see. We brought her to my house, played with her, took her to my room and let her sleep on my bed, which is roughly 10 feet from my dirty POSSIBLY infected clothes (which were also under some other non-infected clothes). Well, my friend called me after my girlfriend left with her puppy to tell me HIS puppy has parvo.

I told my girlfriend and her OTHER dogs that are about 7 years old MAY have gotten into her clothes, she wasn't home so she doesn't know for sure.

How worried should we be about her puppy catching parvo? Can the disease jump around like spores and infect things that haven't been directly touched by the host? Can other dogs that can't be infected transfer it to susceptible dogs?
