A Sniper Rifle As A Gift To A 5 Year Old

How old must I be to buy a rifle or shotgun from places like Arvlas or Academy in Texas?

Federal Law requires purchaser of a long gun from an FFL dealer be 18 years old. Federal law does not speak to purchase from someone who is not a dealer.Under Texas Law, namely Texas Penal Code Section 46.06(c), if a firearm is Sold to a child under 18 years of age, a parent must provide written consent; if the transfer is otjer ghan a sale, such as a gift or loan, a parent must give effective consent.Since Academy is an FFL dealer, the short answer to the question is “”18 years old”.If you want to buy a rifle from your Granddad’s old Army buddy, it's perfectly legal as long as a parent provides WRITTEN consent.

What's the "Big Ticket" gift this year for your kids?

a miniature baby grand piano. Not a toy, actually the real thing, but tiny. 2 1/2 octaves, sweet chiming sound.
Got it for a steal at a second hand store, pretty excited to start teaching him to play piano.
small things, a board book, a stuffed animal, some handmade wooden cars (thank you grandpa) and a potty chair.
Most of his stuff came from the dollar store or the second hand store. Lack of funds.

EDIT: What's the problem with buying my son a beautiful, educational toy for Christmas? So what if it was second hand, it looks perfect!

What's so hard about becoming a sniper?

Well, first you must become a competent infantry soldier, mastering the general infantry battle tasks and skill set. Then, you must become not merely a good or excellent shot, but an outstanding mechanical shot with the rifle. Then, you must master the hand eye coordination of the actual shooting, recovery and reloading, but also range estimation, wind doping, interior and exterior ballistics, practical meteorology And you must expand on the fieldcraft and camouflage skills you learned in your infantry training, until you are a master at hiding and blending in. You must be able to deliver accurate shots , not just on shooting range where the only pressure is possible embarrassment, but on a battlefield. On a battlefield you must still be able to calmly and cooly deliver precision fire on a target when you have been sleepless for two days , haven't eaten in three, are cold and thirsty. You must have the iron self discipline to remain absolutely motionless for hours on end, even as bugs and vermin bite you and ants troop up and down your limbs. You must accurately deliver the shot knowing, successful or not, that you may be stirring up a hornets nest of counter fire or committed troops Beating the bushes looking for… YOU. You are in mortal danger every moment of the mission.Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcock, the famous USMC sniper known as “"White Feather”, crawled more than 1500 meters across an open field to establish a position from where he could fire on his target, a North Vietnamese general. The entire mission took four days and three nights of crawling, inch by inch and avoiding being observed. His return trip, after killing his target, was while more than a battalion of the enemy were looking for him.Lots of stuff is hard, very hard, about developing the skill set to function successfully as a sniper, but it also requires courage of a kind not easily found.
