Addicted babies and withdrawls..?
I am taking custody of my sisters baby when it is born in a month and a half. She will be addicted to heroin.DCFS is involved and my sister will be put in a rehab after the birth. I know little cameron will have to withdrawl, my question is how does this process go? I've heard they will give methadone? How long? When will she be able to come home? I know she will cry, tremble, be sensitive to light, so on so forth. Has any one gone through this with a child? please give me all the information you can. I haven't found much on the internet most is the same stuff the last page said. what is the % of chance my sister will prematurly deliver? I want to be as prepared as I can. This little girl is going to need me to be. I haven't had much advice from the doctors they kind of tip toe around the questions and leave me still wondering. This is no matter to mock. There many drugs that do not affect the foetus - and many totally legal ones that do. There are prescription drugs that harm the foetus, thalidomide was actually prescribed to pregnant women to reduce morning sickness and if you were alive in the 60’s there is a strong chance that you knew at least one person who was now physically deformed because of a perfectly legal, medically prescribed drug.Smoking cigarettes damages the foetus - it causes low birth weight for starters. Cannabis if smoked, is going to have a similar effect. But it is no more dangerous than smoking a cigarette. Calling CPS because the mother smokes cannabis when there are no other reasons for concern is not warranted.Drinking alcohol can severe damage the foetus - there is “foetal alcohol syndrome”. The baby tends to have an unusually shaped head, and has mental retardation. It will suffer severely after birth due to no longer getting alcohol from the mothers blood, and it will be physically addicted and suffer all the symptoms associated with hard withdrawal in an alcoholic. Again, alcohol is legal, if the mother has a glass of wine with a meal are you seriously considering calling CPS? However if the mother is drinking heavily and ignoring all advice to cut down, then you may have cause to worry for the baby and whether the mother will be competent to care for it.So my answer is - for drugs like heroin, cocaine, amphetamine, meth, crack, speed - totally illegal, dangerous, or addictive drugs then there is good grounds for reporting the mother to CPS.If there are “any other cause for concern” (the mother is unkempt, an alcoholic, not looking after herself, living dangerously) then the use of drugs is irrelevant. Report her anyway.If the mother is looking after herself, happy, content, attending her medical appointments religiously then there is no harm in her smoking the odd cigarette, having a small glass of wine, drinking coffee (or coke - caffeine is a drug remember), having an energy drink, drinking a herbal tea (most herbs have an “effective chemical” which may even be a medically prescribed drug when refined - willow bark is the original source for aspirin after all) - then don’t be an officious busybody and make her life hell.The CPS are too busy protecting the children that require protection to want to deal with a woman who is no risk to herself or child.

Don't worry about it at all. Alcohol is the biggest problem. Drugs are not that bad. Expessally coke in early pregnancy. As an adoptive parent I have researched this extensively. I am raising a child with alcohol exposure and no many people raising children exposed to drugs throughout pregnancy. There children are doing just fine. Your baby will be fine too. I was a party girl way back when and children change your life. Don't listen to the idiot that said to get an abortion. You will be Alright. Enjoy parenthood!
If i used cocaine once when i was 8 weeks pregnant how will it affect my baby?
Isn't it a bit late to be worrying about that now? Why didn't you consider the consequences before you did it?
Do you think it is cruel to keep severely disabled children alive?
Just to be clear: I am not talking about minor disabilities like blindness, deafness, or Aspergers. I'm talking about children with such severe disabilities that they: cannot communicate, have an extemely low IQ, cannot feed or care for themselves, are severely physically deformed, and are at a high risk of injury/death. I am also not saying that severely disabled people don't have the right to live. I feel it is cruel to keep them alive, as they are capable of very few things, and they are placed in such extensive care just so they can continue living. If an animal were born that way, it would be seen as inhumane to force it to live, and it would promptly be put down. In many 3rd world countries, severely disabled children end up dying because the parents do not have the resources to keep them alive, or the parents leave the child to die if unable to care for itself after reaching a certain age. If they were aborted or euthanized, they wouldn't have to die like that. Also, severely disabled children will never amount to anything in life, and as such are basically a sink hole that you throw money and resources into. It costs a lot more to raise somebody with severe disabilities than to raise a normal child or a child with minor disabilities. You often end up caring for them well into their adult life, unless they die due to complications resulting from their various disabilities, deformities, and anomalies. People with severe disabilities are also often abused and taken advantage of by their care givers, especially because they cannot defend themselves and are vulnerable, and because they cannot say anything about it. It often isn't talked about, because it often isn't known about. Humans are not meant to live this way. It isn't naturally how we're supposed to be. People with severe deformities aren't just "a little different". There is something seriously wrong with them- but it isn't their fault.
