How much space does a turtle need?

The general rule of thumb for aquatic turtle tank space requirements is 10 gallons per inch of turtle length. So, for example, a male RES (red eared slider) grows to be about 7 - 8 inches long and a female grows to be about 10 - 12 inches long; that would be a 75 gallon for a full size male, or a 100 gallon or so tank for a female adult specimen. Here's a reliable place to read about husbandry requirements of aquatic turtle species:

For tortoises it's s bit different; there isn't really a general rule of thumb, just minimum recommended enclosure sizes for different species. For example, Hermann's, Russian, and Greek tortoises (all the same size as adults, about 8 inches) would require a minimum enclosure size of 4ft x 2ft. Tortoises are best housed in "turtle tables," opaque sided enclosures, for basically two main reasons: 1) they have a hard time with the concept of glass and 2) it is very difficult to find tanks with large amounts of length and width; most tanks are created with vertical space in mind, which is great for viewing fish, but useless for housing a reptile where vertical space is all but useless to them. Here's a reliable site to look at husbandry requirements (including minimum enclosure size) for various species of tort:

A teacher at my school has a turtle that has no space to move and is going to die soon. What should I do?

Go to the teacher and show interest in the turtle. Tell her you love reptiles and think it is fascinating. Ask her some questions about it, like where did she get it, how long has she had it, what kind is it, why she has it, and so on, just to break the ice. Then ask why it’s in such a tiny space with no room to move, and if she thinks it’s healthy. Ask her what she’s going to do with it.By being polite and interested, you should be able to get a conversation going and find out some things. If you aren’t satisfied that she knows what she’s doing, tell another teacher you trust, someone with a background in science. If that doesn’t work, tell the principal or a counselor. You could ask her if she would give it to you, and then you could find a better home for it.Any time you are concerned about the welfare of an animal, any animal, take some action to make its situation better. In your case, you may have to get the help of an adult who has some influence on the teacher.HOWEVER: If this is just a rumor going around your school, find out the truth before you do anything. And whatever you do, don’t put the teacher on the defensive. It’s always best to be polite.

Help!!! My water turtle is driving me crazy!!!?

Alright, I have a 1 1/2, year old water turtle. That "tank" I have him in is a large square container. He has alot of space, rocks, shelter in it. I clean it once a day, so it stays clean. I feed him, give him veggies I even play with him sometimes.
But lately he's been just swimming around like crazy, almost like he wants to get out.
Usually he's a quiet little guy, & with as much attn. I give him, he should prob. be the most spoiled turtle in the world.
I mean I even take him out sometimes, so I dont know why he is acting this way.
Please give me some advice, I cant sleep & he is annoying me!!!

Where can I donate my red-eared turtle?

You may need to check your measurements or ages. At 7" long, it is probably more like 5 or 6 years old.

Sadly, the Red-ear slider is one of the most donated turtles in the world. So many people get rid of them that there are established breeding colonies in most countries and almost every US state.

Most animal rescue operations have as many of these as they can take, and several are on record as stating that any more that are donated must either be accompanied by a donation to cover costs, or they have some other similar policies in place. here is the policy of one national program: http://www.turtlehomes.org/usa/red_ear_s...

You still have a couple options however!

A flyer at local pet shops offering the turtles free to a good home (and possibly offering the tank as well) usually does the trick.

A pet shop might buy back the smaller turtle, but larger turtles are a lot harder to sell- they might take both back if it was an 'both or nothing' deal.

Schools, university biology departments, nature centers, small zoos, etc. might be interested in them, as might some of the local animal rescue operations (they are not ALL crowded with Red-ears!)

Releasing them to the wild is both illegal in many places, and usually not fair to the turtle, the other species in the area, or the habitat. Finding a neighbor or someone with a pond on their private property is an option if they will let you put them there.

Please understand that I know this last comment will upset some people, but if you run out of other choices, you can humanely euthanize a turtle by simply letting it freeze. No one does this without running out of other options, and no one approaches this option lightly. I hope no one ever needs to go this far, but the sad reality is that there are more of these turtles than there are good homes for them.

Problems installing Deep Turtle Space Chase?

I download deep turtle space chase client, extract to my desktop. Open minecraft force update.
I then try to run the adventureinstaller.exe but when I select run 'Your minecraft.jar minecraft has been modified or is not the correct version (1.8.1).'

Even if I install anyway minecraft just doesn't run and I get a black screen.

I've done various things like delete bin files, etc.

Help appreciated

My mom ran into a baby turtle at the beach and decided she required to 'rescue it' because she didn't want it to get eaten. What should I tell her?

What about returning it to the ocean? In a home it will likely not grow to its full size and be misshapen and deformed because of lack of space (it’s meant to be in the ocean with endless roaming space…)It will also likely die as it will be hard to fulfil its oceanic needs and natural instincts. The turtle will be much better off in the ocean and after that it should not get eaten, the biggest danger is getting to the ocean as there it is at a disadvantage, so just gently put it in the ocean and it should be fine as long as it makes it to where it’s supposed to go.It will grow to be H U G E and by that time you will not be able to care for it, it’s much better to return it to the ocean instead of being forced to find some zoo or shelter (which might not even exist in your area) that might be willing to take a hand-raised wild-caught sea turtle. Also, tell your mother she stole that turtle from its natural environment and is ruining its chances of a good life and as turtles are going extinct your mother is helping that happen by taking away a perfectly healthy and capable young turtle away from its chance to grow and live and love and additionally, as turtles live really long, she’s likely sentencing that turtle to a lifetime of confinement and misery. So please, return it to the ocean at the beach where you found it.

Is it normal for my turtle to sleep on his side?

I recently bought a turtle (Ok technically a Russian tortoise that is the size of a turtle) and for the past two days his favorite spot seems to be in between his water dish and the back wall of his tank, where there's maybe 4 inches of space. He can't fit there on his stomach so he sort of crawls over the side of his water dish and ends up sideways in the crevice...and then falls asleep there. Is this normal? Is there a specific reason he is doing this? Is it like he's hibernating since he can't burrow more than a few inches or is he just weird?

I can't keep my turtle anymore.?

So I can't keep my red-eared slider that I've had for maybe six years now. She needs more than I have to offer. She needs a bigger tank now but I don't have much space. I'm hoping my sweet Tama goes to a good home so is there any good turtle rescues around Los Angeles, CA? I gave my last turtle to the arboretum but I snook her in. (They said they take turtles but the manager wasn't in). Should I take her to Petsmart or Petco? I just want what's best for her so yeah any help is good.
