Permanent Vegetative State, otherwise known by the acronym PVS is a state wherein someone can rest for years, decades even. Like with everything, it ranges from being able to blink and swallow, grunt and groan to simply laying there, staring up at the ceiling and not doing anything. Where as brain dead, means there is no electrical function in the brain. My question is, just because someone does not respond, or otherwise 'appears' to be dead, yet can still breathe, should they be taken off of life support? For example, a girl called "Haleigh Poutre" was beaten so badly, she entered a PVS and has been in that state for years and years. She was going to be, and in fact, was, taken off of medical life support, despite there not being brain death. The next day, she began breathing by herself, and could follow simple commands. Should she have been taken off of life support?, If she hadn't been, would she still be in a PVS? Do we know enough about the brain to make these choices?
