Advice For Changing My Major

Changing my major junior year?

Please know that those attending college switch their majors all of the time. On that note, people, in general, may switch career fields even more than once in their lifetime. Having a passion for one's work or even being able to tolerate those job tasks is crucial to thriving both in school and at work.

Computer science is supposed to be quite rigorous with calculus and the programming aspect. Please talk to a career counselor at the school. Perhaps your strengths and passions will be found in another course of study as you're wondering.

I don't want to cause more friction between you and your folks, but *you're* the one who has to attend the computer/math classes and learn such difficult work and concepts. Perhaps you may talk to them (and keep a "neutral" tone) about how you appreciate their help, but you're feeling as though another field may be more suited for you.

Changing my major before college starts?

Go ahead and switch it, it shouldn't be a problem. In fact, after the first week of school, lots of people will be switching their classes just because they don't like it, before its too late. I'm surprised you can't just change it yourself? Most colleges allow you to change them yourself online. I find biology much more fascinating than political science courses btw!

Although, I am a science major myself, declared Chemistry.

By switching to the classes you want now, it will help you decide on what you want to do later on in life, if biology interests you, why not take the class now :)!

Btw I also advise to major in something very general, rather than something very specialized, it will give you much more opportunities and you could always specialize later down the road with a masters or Ph.D!

Thats why I choose chemistry, it is a great major and will give me very good general knowledge to help me with my possible career in forensic science. It also gives me great background and plenty of options if I wanted to specialize in something later. Perhaps specialize in something like medicinal chemistry.

A lot of students have been giving me advice to change my major (nursing major). I was wondering if it’s really hard to get the A’s and B’s at Middle Tennessee State University. If so, is there any advise about MTSU’s nursing program/major?

I graduated Magna Cum Laude from MTSU which means I had almost a 4.0 GPA. If you apply yourself and go to class. It’s amazing how much that helps; sometimes a professor will “help” you if you’re sitting on the edge between an A or B just because he/she sent you regularly. I considered changing at one point to nursing, but I didn’t because I had sorority sisters with 4.0 GPAs who were NOT getting into the program. I kick myself for not ever trying. I’m now immunocompromised and even though I have since completed pre reqs for nursing school, going could possibly kill me. My point is, we miss 100% of the shots we don’t take. So if nursing is something you want to do, take the opportunity now. Good luck & Go Blue!

Should I change my major?

There may be a middle road that combines your ability with graphic design and an interest in engineering. Engineering design is still an important field gets into the technical details of devices and components for manufacturing and for advertising. Actually, the diagrams in many of my physics texts required a combination of artistry and computer simulation (I still recall the Fermi surfaces in my Solid State Physics text!)You could take the design background one step further in go into either mechanical engineering or industrial engineering, but you probably will have to extend your studies beyond the 1.5 years you have left. You may also consider automated cartography and geographic information systems. This is by no means a closed field and requires a variety of knowledge of design, geometry, georeferencing, and human interfaces.Another “hands on” field that may be of interest is architecture, but that is a long haul.I am a proponent of combining artistic/design ability with technical and scientific knowledge, so I believe that going deeper into engineering or mathematics can only help your options.

How much will changing my major (from undergrad to graduate school) hurt my chances of getting in?

Sure but it may depend on the preparation and potential you demonstrate to become a good candidate for the schools you apply to. You will be expected to have some materials to submit. NYU Tisch says they are looking for potential creative ability through visual and written materials and that film making background isn’t required. Read the admissions pages of the various grad programs and you will get an idea. Here is USC. But I suspect some will just take your money.USC Cinematic Arts | Graduate Application Procedureshttps://cinema.usc.edu/admission...I know a Chemist who took a few classes at AFT and went to work at Universal doing computer animation before deciding to get a more regular job doing Database programming. If you can take some classes where you are in script writing or creative writing that would probably be a good idea. Also you can look into some Community Colleges to take a few classes to help you develop some materials. In CA we have some good programs at Orange Coast College and LA City College and hella lot cheaper than a 4 year.

Should I change my major mid-semester?

This can wait until you finish your semester and it’s classes. Remember even if you change your major and these classes don’t count towards your new major they will still count towards your GPA. So if you are already past the point of no return with these classes i.e. the drop date they count. If you are failing these classes it would be best to talk to your professors and see ways you can get your grade up, or a tutor to get you through the end.

Changing my major in junior year/having a breakdown/need advice?

Your academic adviser will not think you're a "loser". They are your adviser, not a six year old. Academic advisers are paid to help students in situations like yours. You are not the first and you will not be the last student to change their major during junior year.

If you hate graphic design, then change it. I've met people who have changed their major in their junior year. I've also met people that made drastic major changes (from chemical engineering to graphic design, from electrical engineering to English, from dance education to biochemistry, etc). It was hard, but once they changed, they were much happier.

This change in major might mean an extra year at school with some summer courses. But if you love nutrition, then that extra year might be worth it. Your graphic design classes probably fulfill a few general education requirements, so they won't go to a complete waste.

For now, set up an appointment with your adviser immediately. Find out if any nutrition classes you need are still open so that you can get started right away. If not, figure out what other classes you need for graduation so that you don't spend this semester in classes you hate. Write up a degree plan so that you know how quickly you can earn your degree.

What happens when you change your major?

It depends on a few things. Are you switching to something completely different (say art to chemistry)? You may need to take some additional prerequisites to be able to complete the new major. This could add some additional time to complete your full degree. That being said, people change their majors all the time. I have worked with students who've changed 3,4,5 times because they are still figuring out what they want to do. Take some time to really think about what you are interested in learning about and start there. If you change your major, that's okay too.
