Advice For Small Players In Basketball Pickup Games

I'm a really good basketball player in practice and in pickup but in games I always fail. What do I do?

Here are a couple of tips I find very helpful that make me more effective in games:If you ever see the back of your mans head, cut backdoor. On defense, watch your man’s midsection. He can't go anywhere it doesn't go.Always box out. No matter how far your man is from the basket. Let the ball bounce in front of you and then go get it. You probably won't win jumping contests consistently enough; few do.Practice catching the ball with your feet square. A lot of guys don't pay attention to their feet and it makes a huge difference.Practice compound moves. Basketball should ultimately be reactive, but you need to make things second nature before you will react with them. Instead of just practicing through the legs, behind the back, and spin moves separately, start to practice through the legs straight into behind the back or spin move into spin move.Make sure you have a short game, mid range game and long range game. If guys play you too close, be able to drive. But don't just drive all the way to the rim; make sure you develop the ability to see help and practice stopping on a dime.Make sure you can go right and left. If I can take away a particular direction, you're worlds easier to guard. On the other side of the ball, train your brain. Learn how to assess your teammates’ skills and deficiencies so that you can make them better. Learn how to watch a player for a few plays and determine things like: handedness; is he a ball handler; can he shoot from the outside. This will help you be a better leader on the court.Make sure you get used to talking. Be the guy who calls out screens, make sure you talk through them (switch, hedge, or go under). If you have to scramble to new coverages, make sure everyone gets where they need to go.Learn to set a good, solid, legal screen.Get a post game. A move and a countermove from each block.Make sure you can shoot free throws. Guys shouldn't be able to bail themselves out by fouling you. Try to get yourself up to 80% plus.Practice shooting off the dribble. It's very different from stand-still set shots.Quicken your release. The faster you can get the shot up, the harder you are to guard.Watch NBA players and watch moves that the greats make and practice those.Hopefully this gives you some stuff to work on. Happy practicing.

Tips for dealing with dirty pickup basketball players?

If there black, you can't

I want to go play pick-up basketball, but I'm scared?

I'm a skinny 19-year Asian girl in college, and I'm not that great at basketball-- but people playing pick-up look like they're having so much fun. I really want to try it, but I'm scared to approach the big guys (and sometimes big women). Any tips? Thanks.

How to conserve energy while playing a basketball game?

One reason would probably be because you are not stretching before the game. If you have game and you do not stretch, then later on, your muscles will get stiff and they have as much energy in them, which will make you tired, so stretch before the game. Also, when you sub out for somebody, have a drink of water. One other reason may be because you have a bad level of stamina, to help your stamina (this has helped me a lot as well), run laps around a track or something and every time you do, push yourself to try harder and eventually, your stamina will get better.

Conserving energy while playing basketball?

I constantly lose energy during a pick up game and that most of time cost me the game for being fatigue and not able to keep up with my opponent..

Just yesterday we were winning, we have 10 points while the other team is 6, playing up to 11. And the person I was guarding all of the sudden leaves me behind, I'm really bad when my opponent has speed, I also have a decent height, 5'11, he was short so he was able to take advantage of his speed against me, he probably noticed that I was already drained out and he took advantage of it..so we end up losing. 10-11.

Any advice of conserving energy to be able to finish the game?
