Water Polo advice for beginners?

Two tips:
WORK ON LEG ENDURANCE!!!!!!

the periods are like 4-6 mins for high school water polo but the period usually lasts 15-20 mins due to stoppage in play, you may have to tread that entire time. You'll want to be able to do this and at least be able to tread for 5 minutes comfortably. Also as a warning, practices usually involve chair drills, treading in the deep end holding a folding chair above your head. So having some leg endurance before the season begins is a help.

Work on ball handling
Youll have to catch the ball one handed. Throw a basketball or water polo ball against a wall and work on catching it one handed really fast. The best way to throw off the offensive rhythm is to drop the ball.

The game is usually 4 quarters for high school usually 4 -6 mins in length each. Teams of a goalie and 6 field players work to throw a ball into a goal. The game is rough. Underwater, almost anything goes, punching kicking scratching so be ready to get a little bruised. There is no down time. Even when the whistle stops play your still going to be working your *** off trying to keep your head above water, unless your lucky enough to be in the shallow end when you could stand and take a rest. Obviously the team with the most goals wins. Players can only use one hand to handle the ball and cant push the ball under water. The goalie can use both hands and a closed fist on the ball. The goalie can stand in the shallow end but the field players cannot. The main positions for offense is hole set, like a center in basketball. He is the biggest, strongest. Perimeter players are like guards, faster lighter, better ball handling abilities. They try to get the ball to the hole set for an easy score or go for a long distance goal. Defense is usually zone due to the fluidity of the positions, except for the hole and two meter defender, which usually play man to man

Long story short, water polo is hard, frustrating but soooooooo much fun. For the rest of your life you'll be able to brag that you've played water polo.

High School water polo tryouts....any advice?

I play water polo and I'm currently entering my Junior year in High School. I've been on a competative swim team since I was 8, so I was a good swimmer, but I had never before tried water polo entering my freshman year and I made the freshmen team (not even JV!!). I didn't like water polo at first because it was a contact sport and it can get pretty rough, but by my sophomore year i loved it! I made varsity only my second year of playing the sport :] I play on a club team now, and this upcoming high school season I'm so STOKED for! My advice for you: If you don't like the sport at first, stick with it, because the more knowledge of the game you have, the more fun you'll have. At first all the rules may be confusing, but you WILL get better I promise :] good luck!!!! <3

Water Polo Tryouts Question...?

okay, so i was thinking of trying out for my high school's water polo team. i'm an O.K. swimmer, and i went to one of my friend's water polo practices to try it out. I've never played it before, but the team at my school takes anyone who tries out because they have a big freshman team.
There are a couple things i was wondering...
1) Any tips on how i can prepare for tryouts? I heard they're really tough, and they start next weekend.
2) What are tryouts like?
3) And is it possible to significantly increase my speed when swimming laps in a week? I'm not in bad shape or anything, but i was a lot slower than every one else at practice.

All help is greatly appreciated! :))

Any tips for playing water polo on your period?

I play polo, and I'm fairly new to it, but my period should be here any day now. (FYI I suck at tampons so I'm already at a disadvantage) but if anyone has any tips that'd be helpful, also since I happen to notice at least for me that a LOT of water rushes up there when I'm treading and things like that, does it go into your tampon??

What's your advice to a burnt out 15 year old with exams to come?

Set aside part of your day and just stop.Stop studying. Stop thinking. Stop.Find a way to get out of your own head by yourself. I swim when I need to clear my head. I have friends who run. I have friends who listen to music or play single-player games. Something that doesn't require brain power, but just the ability to be.A lot of people will tell you that these exams are some of the most important things you'll ever do. They'll determine where you'll go to college, which will determine the rest of your life. There's some truth to that, but it's hugely exaggerated- no five or ten points on an exam are worth your health and sanity. Ever. And typically, you'll score on a final exam about the same as you've been scoring the rest of the year, give or take a few points. Completely bombing is unlikely.I'm going into my senior year. I used to get TERRIBLE burnout. Eventually, I realized that I thought of a set of numbers (grades, GPA, ACT and SAT scores, etc) as more important than my actual self, and how ridiculous that is. I realized I didn't have much of an identity outside of my performance in school. I found a much better balance in my life when I started trying to push myself to be a better person in more aspects than just my scores.I love to swim and play water polo, although I'm not much good at it. I love to play music, and have a soft spot for American folk music. I love to read, especially sci-fi/fantasy. I love TV shows with no clear good guys or bad guys. I love learning languages. I love party games, especially Funemployed. I'm a really good singer. I love spending time with my family. I love my dog and take awesome photos of him. I'm disorganized, but creative. I do best working in groups. I love public speaking. I'm really funny. I can't dance. I spend a ton of time reading on Quora. I still watch and enjoy Minecraft videos on YouTube. I love anything leaf-green.“What the fuck does that have to do with anything,” you might be thinking. Here's my question:Could my test scores have told you any of those things?TL;DR: test scores aren't everything. Take some time to do something for yourself and find out who you are.

How can i make VARSITY Water polo?

Well since u answered mine, ill answer yours. When I first started polo I was thrown in with varsity. JV nor Frosh was practicing at the time, so the coach had no other option. Over the summer I continued to practice with Varsity until the 2010-11 school year started and I went down to JV/Frosh practice. After a week, and 10 100s on demand, I was moved up to Varsity. I swam them all around 1:09 and 1:10. That was it. Started practicing and actually went to CIF with them... At our polo banquet, I got my certificate for JV water polo and a certificate stating I went to CIF Championships (ironic, i know :D ) Now I practice with varsity for swim, and WILL be getting my polo varsity letter next season.

I am a great athlete, so it wasn't difficult for me to transition into water polo. It took around 3 months of training twice a day for 5 hours to be able to play an entire game in set and hole guard. Just hard work and determination will get you a spot on varsity. Plus, the situation that our organization was in helped me alot to be on the varsity squad for CIF.

And thats pretty much it. If you have any questions, just send me a message

Tips for playing water polo goalie?

Don't let your team throw balls at your head. A goalie on our team got a mild concussion from that during practice.
If you have trouble seeing, you should wear contacts. I know that the eye doctor will tell you that it is impossible to wear contacts in the pool, but they dont know what they are talking about, because I do all the time. I play water polo and swim with contacts all the time, and so do three others on my team. As for coordination and blocking the ball, remember that practice is the best thing you can do.
