Advice On Maintaining Dyed Auburn Hair

Tips for maintaining colored hair?

Use heat protector every time you straighten or blow drý your hair.
Buy some dry shampoo so you don't have to wash as often. Try Pssssst! brand, I love it.
Also, you can buy a leave in conditioner that seals in color.
And when you wash your hair, be sure to rinse with cold water.

What are some tips for maintaining this hair color while keeping my hair healthy?

Wash your hair less. Every 3 days should do it, and still keep you clean.Wash your hair in cool water.Do not use stripping shampoos like clarifyers. Find a good color-safe one. A neutral pH is always a plus.Take restraint with heat-styling. It opens the scales of the hair which helps let out the color molecules, causing them to dissipate sooner. This is why you must wash in cool water; it keeps the cuticle of the hair closed, sealing in the color. If you must heat style, use a dime-sized amount of silicone serum before-hand and use the lowest temperature you can. Only blow-dry until your hair is 90% dry; air-dry the rest of the way. Consider getting a UV-protective spray for use when you go out in the sun.Use a demi-permanent after the initial color. It is really not that much different than a permanent other than the fact that it is less harsh. Your hair does not need to be stripped to refresh a color it already went; and for this reason, also consider a 'color glaze' for touch-ups. If you're going darker, don't use a developer stronger than 20 vol. Don't bleach your hair more than once for a touch-up. Semi-permanent pinks like Manic Panic can be applied however much you want with no damage as long as you're not re-bleaching.

How to maintain ombre hair?

1.) When in doubt always seek professional help or advice. It's better to be safe than sorry. Especially with things that are mostly permanent.

2.) It all depends on YOUR hair. If you have thin hair I would suggest trying to avoid bleach as much as possible as it can KILL thin hair. If you can't decide, once again you can ask a professional at any salon and work out a plan that's best for you even if you decide to do it yourself out of a box.

3.) Maintaining will take lots of works. (this kinda mixes with #4) Try to avoid staying in ANY water (pools, ocean, shower, bath, etc.) for extended periods of time if you dye it because it will cause the color to fade. Also make sure to use a shampoo and conditioner that say clearly "for color treated hair". Wash your hair in cool or lukewarm water. And make sure to keep up with your hair cuts and dyes because once your hair starts to break it'll just keep getting worse until you fix it. (And it sucks when you have to cut off inches of hair. I know from experience.)

4.) Yes. I'm afraid it will. If you go BLONDE at the ends, it'll cause the blonde to turn kinda greenish. (I'm a natural blonde and it happens to me all the time.) It can also damage your hair. Since chlorine already damages hair and having it damaged from bleach and chlorine can really hurt it so make sure to condition the ends well. But if you can keep up with conditioning and make sure to wash your hair no later than 30 minutes after getting out of the pool than you'll be fine. Ocean water doesn't really hurt it too much just make sure to CONDITION, CONDITION, CONDITION. It will SAVE your hair.

Tips: Wash your hair in cold to lukewarm water, condition, ask professional for tips and advice if you need it, it doesn't hurt to ask. And make sure to use shampoo that is meant for color treated hair. If you have any questions please ask. Hope I helped!!

Hair dye advice? i have brown w/ some natural red in it. i want to go blonde.?

If your highlights are natural red, no matter what color you use, you will still have red highlights. You need a professional to strip your hair and color it the correct shade. Natural reds are getting more rare than they use to be. Stripping hair and re-coloring is double-processing which can damage and weaken hair so a professional needs to be the one to do it. She/he will asess your present hair and scalp for condition, dryness, etc. Don't take this lightly.

Stick with your natural color. Your expectations are not realistic if you don't use a professional and you could do damage.

How do I prevent hair dyed purple from fading?

No matter what you do, it will fade, because purple hair dyes are semi or demi-permanent, not completely permanent. That being said, there are ways to keep it from fading faster than your roots grow in. 1. Get a good brand of purple dye. Manic panic is made to fade quickly, other brands are made to fade less. Pravana, Punky Color, Arctic fox, and Special Effects make purple dyes that last MUCH longer. 2. Heat set your hair dye once it is applied. This helps it sit better in the hair shaft and stay longer.3. When you wash out the hair dye, use cold water, and only use color treated hair conditioner. After you first wash out the dye, avoid washing for a couple of days. 4. Add a spoonful or so of any left over dye to both your shampoo and conditioner. Make sure you are using sulfate free, designed for color treated hair shampoo and conditioner. When you use the conditioner with the dye mixed in, let it sit on your hair for 1-5 minutes. This will help "refresh" the color some every time you wash.5. Wash and rinse your hair in cold or tepid water. Hot water opens up the cuticle which will release more dye(color). Using cold water helps keep the cuticle closed and keep the color in.6. Avoid use of styling products and heat styling. Heat styling does the same thing hot water does. Many styling products contain alcohol, which will fade hair faster. 7. Try to avoid washing your hair every day, if you can skip a few days, even better. Dry shampoo is a good option on your non-wet shampoo days. 8. Wear a hat or hood when in direct sunlight. Yes, this can fade the color too. 9. Make sure your hair is healthy. Severely damaged or bleach-fried hair does not hold color near as well as fairly healthy hair. With this tips, you can probably prolong the color so that you only really need to refresh it every other month instead of monthly. Depending on your hair, it may even last months without fading. I've had purple last up to 6 months with minimal fading and no touch ups.

Is Manic Panic a good hair dye (also, advice on dying/bleaching hair)?

Manic Panic is pretty good stuff. But like any "unnatural" color dye, it is semi-permanent. You will experience "bleeding" and fading no matter what brand you use. Red is the most difficult color to maintain. Manic Panic is a brand that isn't great with reds. Their Blues and Purples have given me fantastic results though. And in my experience, Manic Panic is great for subtle "unnatural" color. Like blue black.

If your hair is black, you will need to bleach it, in order for the blue to show. Don't worry about getting it too light. However if your hair is dark brown... you may be able to throw a blue dye over it and get a nice blue-black highlight.

But if your hair is truly black, you need to bleach. You just need to take it down to a brown for blueblack. If you want more of a vibrant blue, then, yes, you will need to go to the lightest blonde possible. Use a low volume bleach... it won't fry your hair if you are just taking it down to brown. 3-Minute Miracle by Aussie is a great conditioner that I use to keep my hair soft, and healthy. I totally recommend it to avoid frizz. Also, if you use Manic Panic, it is a veggie dye, that also conditions your hair as the color is left in. :)
