After 11. Septemper 2001 Many Countries Have Introduced Stricter Rules At Airports.

What was airport security like before 9/11?

Way more relaxed: I once got into a tussle with a Singaporean security guard over carrying a blow pipe on a flight to Taiwan. I know, today I’d never even consider it. For what it is worth there were other ceremonial weapons (kris daggers) that were either allowed or missed in my carry on.I was merely trying to ensure the items were not damaged and hence had not packed them in my checked baggage, but still…In hindsight it was fairly comical, although I’d never dream of acting so rashly today. The guard, unable to wrest the weapon from my grip, finally pointed up to the mezzanine balcony, where a crowd of amused and well armed guards were calmly gazing downward at me. Getting the rather clear message of discretely aimed gun barrels I relented and let go of the blow pipe. The story has a fortunate coda: I was escorted off the plane by Taiwanese police when we landed at our destination, ahead of the rest of the passengers, and once out of sight, slapped on the back and given back my blowpipe. Apparently Singapore had notified the Taiwanese, but there had been some sort of diplomatic dispute earlier in the week between the two nations and the Taiwanese felt like thumbing their noses at the Singaporeans by ignoring my offense.I was unusually lucky. I strongly recommend no one else try such idiocy. But yes security was much more minimal back then. I carried the blow pipe in my hand luggage on the next flights to Japan and San Francisco with no further issues. And yes, further back in time it was customary to walk with friends and family to the boarding gate, and to greet them as they exited from the plane when friends flew into town.
