Agonizing Upper Back Pain All Of A Sudden Help

What is worse, Upper or lower back pain?

Either kind of pain could indicate problems, so it really depends on the person's situation. It could be muscular, or it could be skeletal, etc. And any could also cuase severe headaches. Or they could be unrelated.

A disc problem could give you pain like you describe. Disc problems sometimes resolve themselves when the body resorbs the bulged or ruptured disc, or the broken disc piece dries up. It can take 3-6 months to see relief this way, but at least you don't have to have surgery. Agonizing pain with sudden sharp pain/spasms may indicate a worse problem, like a piece of disc pressing into the spinal cord, which could lead to permanent partial paralysis, etc. Surgery may be necessary to correct it.

There is no real way of knowing without a good physical exam by a trained doctor, and probably Xrays, CT scans, and/or MRIs. Have you considered seeing your doctor?

Take care!

Does a cough cause upper back pain?

It can in certain situations. If the cough irritates one of the costo-vertabral joints, which is the joint between the rib and the spine, it can cause upper back pain. This is because during a cough we have a large change in intra-thoracic pressure, which leads to a shift at that joint, and can sensitize it and activate the pain receptors. To reduce this, you should try to relieve pressure through those joints and attempt to stretch the upper back. You can see how to do that herePain can be very complex, and it is important to note it is not always related to the tissues, it could be driven by the neural system. I woke up with terrible pain in my upper back near the neck. What can I do to alleviate it?

I woke up with terrible pain in my upper back near the neck. What can I do to alleviate it?Cracking my neck and back as I often do isn’t helping. I can barely turn my head.Follow up: What might have caused this? (I’m thinking that it could be that my mattress or pillow are too firm, I may have slept in an awkward position, or maybe it’s not quite healthy to crack my neck/head after all).I have studied these issues for 20 years, and i write about them on Quora. Please read this: Paul Darling's answer to What are the causes of back pain?It has nothing to do with mattresses nor pillows, nor ‘sleeping on your neck wrong’ (how does a person sleep on their neck, by standing on their head?), nor ‘pinched nerves’, etc. Not to dismiss any solutions a person might have found however. If a particular pillow, or routine, or exercise helps, then I’d keep it up. However most children don’t have neck and back pain, and they can sleep just about anywhere and in any position.Hidden internal emotional conflicts come to the surface during sleep, if the hidden guilt/fear/anger is too overwhelming to face, it manifests as pain in the neck/shoulders/back, and even other areas of the body.I will be happy to interpret a healing dream you might have in the next few days, and I can assure you that you can eliminate the pain.I hope to hear more. Cheers.Edit: I have noticed that many people have been strongly affected by the current political climate in the US, and are very angry about the racism, lies, violence, and sneering contempt exhibited by the current slanderer-in-chief. However, when we are very angry at people we need or care about, such as friends or family who disagree with our political views, guilt is often a result, and this hidden guilt drives most neck pain. I’ll bet there’s a rash of neck and back pain attacks right now in the US.

What happens when your back seizes up (it "locks" so that you can barely move)?

When the back “seizes up” to the point that you could barely move it is secondarily caused my severe muscle spasms to prevent you from doing anything else to aggravate your injury. The primary cause is from nerve impingement, caused possible from a disk injury such as a disk herniation to the lumbar spine. The muscle all over the body are told what to do by the nerves that are connected to them. And when these nerves connecting to the end organ (muscles) become impinged they cause the muscled to stay in constant contraction. There are forms of treatments that may be alleviate the swelling of the disk when the injury is acute such as cryotherapy (ice pack). Cold contracts the blood vessels the the are allowing a reduction of swelling to take the pressure off of the nerves. Heat should not be used when this occurs since it dilated the blood vessel to the area causing more pressure on the nerves thus causing the muscles to stay contracted (locked up). The main goal when this happens in the body is to reduce the swelling of the disk. Chiropractor work primarily with the spine and can offer great advice in situations like these naturally. What causes lower back pain with headache?

If these are the only symptoms, the most common cause can be some spinal issue, as nerves coming from the brain (head) continues in the spinal cord, upto the very last part of your back.If there is any abnormality in the meninges (things that cover your brain and spinal cord) overall, the above symptoms can precipitate. This could also be due to an improperly done Lumbar Puncture or if the patient hasn't followed the post-lumbar puncture advisory for rest. The 2 symptoms can also be different in origin, improper sitting posture or longer sitting in an unpleasant environment can cause lower back pain with (irritational) headaches. If the pain increases or remains indignant for a long time, please refer to a doctor for professional advice.

Please Help Diagnose My Severe Arm Pain?

Welcome to the world of a pinched nerve in your neck!

On a more serious note, based on your symptoms I believe you have a herniated or bulging (Hopefully) disc in your neck compromising the nerve root exit. this will cause severe pain and numbness throughout your neck, shoulder and arm depending on which disc is damaged.

Make an appointment with a back and neck specialist like a pain management or physiatrist (physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor) or your primary care doctor and ask for a cervical spine MRI. You will be most likely prescribed some pain medication and muscle relaxers, also physical therapy. If your disc is just bulging, PT should fix your problem and make you stronger so you don't herniate the disc. You may also be recommended to have an injection into the disc. If the disc is herniated you may need surgery.

Hopefully you read this, I feel no one ever reads these answers.
