Thanks for the A2A.My Japanese is not particularly good. I can just about communicate, but I am far from fluent, and my reading skills are pretty low. So obviously I could never appreciate the nuance of history and poetry needed to truly appreciate it.So I don’t really have an opinion in terms of Japanese linguistics or culture. But my Japanese wife and her friends are warming to it, and I am interested in their opinions.I know the controversy of the most common meaning of 令 but it seems pretty weak to me. And as someone who is around Japanese tea ceremony every day, I am well-acquainted with the peace and harmony of 和. So the official translation of “beautiful peace” is one I accept and like.Now as a native English speaker, it sounds quite soft to me, like a girl’s name. A bit like “Layla.” My favourite english word is “ephemeral.” I just like the soft flowing sound of it, and “reiwa” is a bit like that.And finally, as someone with synesthesia, (seeing colours for letters and numbers) I can say that, for me, it is truly a beautiful word. R is a deep, rich navy blue for me. W is white. Vowels are very very pale and do very little to affect the colour of a word. But they still have a colour. E is slightly green. I and A are basically white, or a very very very pale yellow. So in my mind, it is a gradient of deep blue-green fading to a dazzling white. Like a bright misty sky above a lush ocean. Quite beautiful!
