Although The Legal Age Is 21 What Age Do Teenagers Start To Drink In America

In America, why we legally can't drink until 21?

It's probably from prohibition. After they decided to make drinking legal again seems as if they pushed as far back as they could. Also, putting it at 21 makes it so you won't be drinking (legally) while in high school and is suppose to allow your brain/body and maturity to develop.

Teens: Do you think the drinking age should be 18 instead of 21?

Just curious other teenagers perspective on the legal drinking age being 18. also say why.

I say it should be 18, because most of the other nations of the world have the legal age set at 18, you can buy cigarettes at 18, which have much more health risks than alcohol. Also, alcohol can be dangerous, but if it is drunk in moderation it lowers your Lactate Dehydrogenase levels which decreases your risk of heart attack.

I also think the drinking age should be 18 because at 18 years of age you become in charge of your own health, you can even refuse life-saving medical care even if it costs you your life.

Whats your opinions?

Does Ontario's 19 minimum drinking age apply to Americans? Will bars not serve Americans and how are they portrayed by Canadian media?

The drinking age is always whatever the province has decided the age will be. The drinking age in Canada varies between 18 and 19 years of age depending on what province you're in. So as a visitor you would be allowed to drink at the legal drinking age just like everyone else as long as you have legitimate government ID of some sort. As for rowdiness, Americans in particular are not usually a concern from my experience but rowdiness does happen on occasion in any bar no matter the background of the people. It just tends to be something that can happen. If you're looking to avoid being around rowdy crowds look up the places you're going to before you go. Generally I have found most of our bars to be pretty relaxed. As mentioned in other answers here, the media is very similar to that of the US. Our countries are not incredibly different but we do have our differences. You most likely won't have any issues with any media no matter if your an American or not

Should the legal drinking age be lowered to 18?

I think there should be an exception is all. I think the legal age of 21 is fine as it is. However, if you are in the military, it should be 18. As stated above, if you can be expected to die while protecting our country than you can deserve to have a drink.

Can an 18-year-old American drink in England?

In the US, the drinking age is 21, but in England, it's 18. I'm not planning on drinking much (or at all), but I just realized that I might be legally allowed to take a sip, which would be cool!

Is the legal drinking age determined why where you LIVE or where you ARE?

Thanks so much!!

Why do we have to be 21 to legally drink alcohol in the US?

Short Answer: To combat drunk driving. It seems that the nation-wide age of 21 was only instituted in 1984 with the passing of the National Minimum Drinking Age Act.Prior to that, individual states could set their drinking ages to be whatever they wished. After the repeal of prohibition, most states set their drinking age to 21 because, at the time, that *was* the age of majority. After the legal voting age was changed (26th Amendment), several states began to lower the purchase age to 18.Then this act was passed. It prohibits purchase and public consumption for those under 21. Do note that this act was passed to combat drunk driving; part of its teeth includes the provision that any state with an age under 21 would receive a ten percent decrease in its highway funds. Many states that had lowered the drinking age after the passing of the 26th Amendment had already begun to raise their drinking ages again for the same reasons. So the answer to your question (at least in part) seems to be to combat drunk driving. As for why this is different in the US, the US is heavily driving-oriented; we do not have the public transport that Europe does. Most US teens get their licenses young, and statistically they are the most likely to have accidents. Drinking and driving increases those numbers.Important note: the act itself does not necessarily ban consumption under 21 in all circumstances, although many states extended the act into a full ban. There's still a little variance by state, and in many it is okay for those under 21 to consume alcohol in private and/or with families. It's also worth noting that the drinking age has come under question multiple times, with several college presidents (including my own at Washington and Lee University, VA) signing the Amethyst Initiative that is pro-lowering the drinking age.Read more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nat..., http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj...
