Am I The Only One Or Is Yahoo Answers Addictive

Why is Yahoo just letting Yahoo Answers die?

Yahoo!'s revenues mainly come from display advertising. Answers is just another Yahoo! property that sales ads and nothing else. The cost of maintaining such site and competing with more professional services such as Quora is too high compared to the revenue they might get off of it. If Yahoo! had to revamp any products, it would most likely be mail instead.

Will Quora one day become Yahoo Answers?

First of all, I have limited knowledge about both the forums in question. Now, here is my opinion. It's improbable that Quora will swoop down to the level of Yahoo! Answers. As it is evident, most of the questions asked on Yahoo! Answers are silly and redundant, whereas we find a lesser proportion of such questions on Quora. I feel that the main reason is the inner purpose of both forums. Quora, in my opinion focuses more on knowledge while Yahoo! focuses more on the users/askers. The fact that answers on Quora are open to public opinions validates it. Users can upvote, downvote, comment on any answer. Contrastingly on Yahoo! Answers, the asker is asked to choose what she/he feels is the best answer. This difference in the focuses of these forums influence the level of questions and answers on them. When the focus is on knowledge and anyone can contribute to enhancing it (Quora), the quality of the questions and answers will stay good. When the focus is on satisfying the askers/users, the questions and answers are bound to be silly.Apart from this fundamental difference, I feel that there are some more differences that make Quora better. Quora has been made with a better technology than Yahoo! Answers (from what I read on the web). Users can use real identities, hence care about their answers and questions. Quora is trying to rope in more and more real life experts on different topics. They include celebrities and other influential people around the world. So, the credibility factor comes into play. Recently, Barack Obama has joined Quora. Cool, isn't it?You can follow topics, users, questions and practically whatever you want on Quora. It is a highly customized platform which is designed to give you exactly what you want.Questions can be answered even long after they were posted and answers can be edited.Quora has a credit points system which acts as a big incentive for users to establish themselves on Quora. People play a points game on Quora and at the same time help spread knowledge around the world.

What is your opinions on addiction?

the first thing that comes to mind when i think of addiction is drugs, cigarettes, gambling and alcohol. i've known several people who were addicted to drugs and it destroyed their lives and that of their loved ones. i imagine it isn't too much different with alcoholism or gambling.....my own husband and some of my relatives are addicted to cigarettes. most of them say they don't seriously intend on quitting either! a few have even said they'll lay on their death beds with a cigarette in their mouths and die happy. i used to smoke as well, but when i had my children i couldn't fathom the thought of losing 10 minutes of my life everytime i lit up.......when i think of the word addiction, only negative thoughts come to mind. people putting their uncontrollable urges above what they know is right or best. i've been lucky enough not to be faced with my loved ones suffering through an addiction to drugs or alcohol but i have sympathy for those who do. it's painful to watch someone you love so much slowly kill themselves, and they are aware of it but can't stop. as i always say.......it destroys lives.

Addiction is a chronic disorder proposed to be precipitated by a combination of genetic, biological/pharmacological and social factors. Addiction is characterized by the repeated use of substances or behaviors despite clear evidence of morbidity secondary to such use.

There is a lack of consensus as to what may properly be termed 'addiction.' Some within the medical community maintain a rigid definition of addiction and contend that the term is only applicable to a process of escalating drug or alcohol use as a result of repeated exposure. However, addiction is often applied to compulsive behaviors other than drug use, such as overeating or gambling. These behavioral addictions, however, almost never exist without another addiction to some substance. In all cases, the term addiction describes a chronic pattern of behavior that continues and is perceived to be hard or impossible to quit at any time. It is quite common for an addict to express the desire to stop the behavior, but find himself or herself unable to cease.

Addiction is often characterized by an ongoing effort to use more (drug or behavior), tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms in the absence of the stimulus. Many drugs and behaviors that provide either pleasure or relief from pain pose a risk of addiction or dependency.

Is Quora just a glorified Yahoo! Answers?

Sure, in the sense that a Tesla is just a glorified golf cart.  At the most basic level, they both work on the same principle, but one has design, functionality, capability and even looks that's far beyond the other.   The problem here is that you have two competing definitions of the word "glorified".  It can mean something that's given glory for no good reason, or it can mean something that's been made glorious.  If you mean the first, then no, Quora isn't given glory for no good reason.  It's far more prestigious because it has a great deal more to offer.  The differences between the sites may be subtle (some are, and some aren't) but they cumulatively make a huge difference in the user experience (at least, they did in my case). If you're using the second definition, then the answer is yes.  Quora took the basic concept behind Yahoo Answers and they made it into something glorious.  And good for them.

Why do people prefer Quora over Yahoo! Answers?

Oh boy, this is going to be fun.Q1: Why do we need water to survive?Quora: Our bodies are mostly made of water, so we need to continually replenish our water supply in order to survive.Yahoo! Answers: WE DONT!!! I ACTUALY FOUND A HEALTHY WATER SUBSTITUTE IF U GUYS R INTRESTED!!!!!!!Q2: What is 2+2?Quora: 2+2 is equal to 4. For instance, imagine you had two cookies and your friend gave you two more. How many do you have now? You now have 4 cookies.Yahoo! However, green light is the one wavelength in the spectrum that chlorophyll cannot absorb. Therefore, it is reflected back to our eyes, which perceive the grass to be green.Yahoo! Answers: the same reason teh skys blue god made it that way now just be happyBONUS: Yahoo! Answers strikes back!I’ll let you be the judge of why people prefer Quora.

Is drug addiction a choice?

I think if you ask a lot of addicts you will find that most of addiction starts with someone trying to escape a mental health problem (depression, anxiety, etc) or physical pain problem. The emotional pain and dealing with life is so difficult or painful they use substances to escape and then become addicted. Lots of people start with partying, but the ones that get in deep are the ones with health problems. Some people become (physically) addicted and some don't. There is research about how different chemicals bind (attach) to different parts of the brain. Call a drug and alcohol counsellor for information, they have lots.

Which is more addictive, playing online games (on Facebook or elsewhere), or posting, answering and commenting on questions on Q-and-A sites (like Quora and Yahoo! Answers), and why?

Which is more addictive, playing online games (on Facebook or elsewhere), or posting, answering and commenting on questions on Q-and-A sites (like Quora and Yahoo! Answers), and why?Going to go with neither, simply gaming or spending time on Quora isn’t an addiction in moderate amounts and so it varies from the person, some prefer to browser game and some prefer to Quora it is up to the individual with varying effects with one platform or another, it’s like take you take drugs that changes brain chemistry to become reliant on the drug and hence actually become addicted if large, frequent amount of addictive drugs are used.

Why is Quora more popular than Yahoo Answers? What elements make it the more popular Q&A site?

A couple of years back, early 2015 I guess, I wanted to know about the basics of big data and its importance in industry.I googled “What is Big data”The first link popped up was Wikipedia - I opened in a new tab and set it aside. The second link was from Yahoo answers. I opened and was looking for some useful information. There were answers like:I was confused, irritated and most of the answers didn’t answer the question. The next link which popped was from Quora.I could find answers like this:Answer was by Balaji Viswanathan (பாலாஜி விஸ்வநாதன்) sir. That is the moment I followed him and read his other answers too! And that was the moment i decided not to refer yahoo answers for anything in future.Unlike Yahoo answers, Why was the answer better? It summed up all the information - technical explanation with real life examplesPictures made it easier for me to connect with answerThe credential “Ran a Big data company” made me believe the answer is from someone trustworthy.Upvotes and comments of appreciation from people in related field made me feel secured about the answerComments were healthy and was debating its future application. So, with no further discussions, Quora is always better than Yahoo answers.

How do you curb a shopping addiction?

The best method is to replace it with another, more potent addiction.

For example, why not take up drinking or drugs? When you're zoned out of your mind on heroin or crystal meth, shopping won't even occur to you.

There's also compulsive sex, compulsive gambling... so many to choose from. Make sure to pick the one that's best for you, as we're all individuals and we all have different addiction needs.
