Anatomy Question- Describe 3 Structural Features That Make The Alveoli Adapted To Their Job

What are the structural adaptations of the alveoli that allow it to carry out its functions?

The gas-blood barrier between the alveolar space and the pulmonary capillaries is extremely thin, allowing for rapid gas exchange.

AS biology : Features of mammalian lung and the ways in which they are adapted to efficient gaseous exchange?!?

1. numerous small bubble like alveoli - greatly increases surface area for gaseous exchange

2. thin alveolar wall - allows gases to diffuse easily and faster

3. thin capillary wall - easy diffusion

4. numerous capillaries in contact with alveoli- allows faster and more efficient gas exchange

5. moist inner wall of alveoli - allows gases (oxygen) to dissolve in it..cause oxygen can only diffuse to the capillary in dissolved state

6. quick renewal of deoxygenated blood in the capillaries - allows faster diffusion

How does cell shape affect cell function?

cell function and shape are directly related in that the shape helps the function...the best way i can explain it is with your red blood cell example...red blood cells are biconcave in order to maximize the surface area so that the maximum amount of oxygen can be transported with each cell...this helps the body function at its optimum...the same goes with all other cells in our bodies and in all organisms...i hope this helps
