Animation Or Graphic Designing What To Go For

What is more valuable to learn: programming, graphic design, or 3d animation?

It's a stereotypical view that Programming and Graphics Design don't go together. Well it's partly true and partly false. Spending more time on one skill implies spending less on the other, making you less competent. The primary reason for this is both are highly competitive. I myself, started coding during school days and it was in college when I devoted more attention to 3-D animation and modeling(courtesy: Digital Tutors). Since then, I've tried to maintain a balance between the two(not completely successful though).   Also, the beauty of programming and design together is a matchless beauty. Sometimes you'll face situations when the distinction between the two is blurred. Today, a programmer needs to understand and apply principles of graphic design in order to develop applications that are usable and attractive to the user. Likewise, a graphic designer developing electronic media must understand and apply programming principles to control the dynamic behavior of the media. For example, Autodesk Maya is a 3-D design software. However, Python Scripting in Maya is used sometimes to achieve impeccable results which would rather be much difficult when you have no idea of programming. Now, Which is more valuable? What I believe is : "Catering to your interests and doing something which brings you eternal pleasure and satisfaction is much more valuable than anything else."So, I would suggest: Experiment!Do both of these:Use your technological brilliance, program algorithms, design data structures etc.Grow and blossom your creativity. Nurture your design skills.  And finally, decide according to your personal preference. Let your talent guide you and help you in making this decision.

Yes surely you can do graphic design and animation both. There are many who can do both. If I am not wrong, from your question it seems that you are learning animation and you are thinking whether you should spend to learn graphic design as well or vice versa. I think you should go ahead and learn both. But from a professional point of view a big studio will look forward to hire a specialised artist, if they are not specifically looking for a generalist. So, it is always advisable to learn all that interests you, gain knowledge, and then do a specialised training in one particular field, that attracts you most. The reason being, any creative production house will have departments and a pipeline to follow. So if you are a 3D character animator, it is less likely that you will get a graphic design job to crack. Which is better to learn, graphic design or animation?

Graphic Design will give you a solid foundation in visual design across many different mediums and can be carried into a career in animation, film, television etc. However Graphic Design is not for everyone. If you’re not excited to design everything from cereal boxes to Brand Style Guides for large corporations and prefer things like character design and bringing characters to life, Animation might be more for you. That said it depends on what type of animation appeals to you. If you’re into motion graphics and moving text etc more than character animation then a foundation in Graphic design will really help you. Both fields have plenty of opportunity for employment. If you can, I’d recommend studying both (speaking as a Graphic Designer who now primarily works in Animation).

Does graphic design include animations such as cartoons etc.?

Im a graphic designer and a plastic artist, and you see animation on graphic design but in a different way more business oriented more for selling purposes. But of course you can use the tools and skills you learn at Design( which are great) and use them on animation. It helped me study graphic design to find better ways at marketing my paintings. And i also got some jobs at doing graphic novels. But there are schools in which the main focus is animation.
