Ankle Pain Is It Broken

How can u tell you have a sprained or broken ankle?

That is difficult, I have had both. If it is broken, at least in my case the pain was so severe I could not even take one step on it. However a sprain being painful, you can put some pressure on it. Ususally the only way to tell for sure is to have an X-ray. But if you cannot get there right away: ice on 20 minutes, off 20 minutes and Advil or Motrin reduces the swelling. I hope you feel better soon!

What does a broken ankle feel like?

I dislocated and broke my left ankle a month ago and sprained my right one!The pain was excruciating! In ER they pumped me full of meds, including a shot of what I think they called ‘milk of magnesium' (or something like that), it renders you unconscious with no recollection of what happened so they could reset my bones. They put a back strap cast on and I had to wait for two weeks for surgery while the swelling went down!I thought the worst was over! I have a high pain threshold, but I could not bear what I was going through, even with the opiates. My immobility/vulnerability was adding to the psychological trauma, which probably did not help the healing process!I never thought going to the toilet would be on top of my despise list! No showers, baths, making a simple cup of tea or putting a clean pair of pants on yourself! All my power was gone!I had surgery! Great I thought, I am fixed I can go home and make myself a good cup of tea and put my own fucking pants on!NOT.A.FUCKING.CHANCE.I had epidural anaesthetic so was conscious whilst they cut, pulled, scrapped, hammered, screwed and whatever else I was not privy too, except the audio and the bantering between myself and the theatre staff. Six pins, one screw and a 90mm titanium plate later, I was hauled off to the recovery room, then to the ward for ‘pain management’.For the next 12 hours I was howling like a banchee and given enough morphine to probably kill an elephant in one dose! I was off my face, hallucinating and almost drank enough water to fill a small dam. One problem, can't get to a toilet! No nurses or bedpans. Can't hold it in. Fuck. Oh well…..urine and dignity all over the mattress! Being high as a satellite helped me not give a shit anymore!I must have resembled and sounded like a wounded animal during those 12 hours! Its been 2.5 weeks since surgery. My right ankle has recovered and I am able to walk a bit with a frame. They have removed the cast and given me a very sexy moonboot! Pity I gave up the opiates as I would have thought I was ‘walking on the moon'.This is my left ankle now:So, you ask what its like to break an ankle? In a nutshell, it was like giving birth to 4 kids through your foot.I know I have got a long healing process ahead of me and will no doubt face more pain when learning to walk all over again.

What's wrong with my ankle? Broken? Sprained?

I understand. I'm a dancer and a former elite gymnast, from which I suffered years of ankle injuries and actually developed a chronic ankle problem. So, I feel your pain :D

It sounds to me like you have probably sprained your ankle. Sprains can be really painful, and severe sprains are often worse (on a pain level) than breaks. But, because your ankle is not bruised, a break is unlikely, which is the good news! There are a few things you should do:

1. If your ankle is extremely swollen, particularly if the swelling turns purple or black and blue, or if you cannot bear weight (not as in it hurts to walk, but as in the ankle actually shakes and cannot support your weight), you should see a doctor right away. You'll need X-rays done to rule out fracture, and you may need an Aircast and/or crutches for the most severe sprains, which will make it easier to walk for a few days.

2. Even though it hurts, icing the ankle is very important. Keep it elevated above the heart, and put something between the ice and your skin to protect your skin from the cold. You should ice for 20 minutes at a time, a little longer in the beginning, and every few hours. Even after the ankle starts to feel normal again, icing after physical activity (along with stretching!) will keep it feeling up to par.

3. Wrap your ankle. You can use an Ace bandage if the sprain is mild, but I'd suggest a store-bought support brace for moderate sprains and an Aircast for severe sprains. Your doctor might give you alternate methods of stability.

4. Rest. You should stay off the ankle for a few days, longer if the sprain is severe. Ultimately, time is the best healer for this kind of injury. After a few days, you might try some mild stretching. Applying heating pads before stretching and ice afterward will keep your ligaments in your ankle from further injury. If it hurts too much, stop. you don't want to cause more damage. If the sprain is moderate to severe, you might also want to keep some sort of support brace on the ankle when you return to activities to prevent re-injury.

5. There is no real remedy for the pain of a sprained ankle, except time. Your body needs to heal. But, taking Advil or Aleve might help with some of the pain, and will definitely help with some of the swelling. You can use these and other OTC medications to try and relieve pain a little.

How do I break my ankle?

If you want to break your ankle easily and quickly, you’ll probably need some kind of blunt force trauma to your ankle resulting in a break. It will probably be pretty tricky to break your own ankle however because your brain prevents you from wanting to injure yourself usually. It’s the whole thing where we could technically bite off our own pinkie fingers but our brain doesn’t allow us to. It would take a hell of a lot of balls to purposely break your own ankle, knowing how much incredible pain you will be in. If you are looking to break it to get out of something such as sports or an event, you might as well save yourself the actual pain of breaking your ankle, and just buy some type of brace or casting material off of amazon and fake it. No one is going to make you take off your brace to see your “broken ankle”. Technically breaking your own ankle would probably considered self-harm, and is generally stupid, but I suppose you could take a hammer or such to your ankle. The hammer with be fast and easy, but very very painful. It will be more than just a broken bone, but busted blood vessels probably, swelling, and bruising. Soft tissue complications associated with the broken ankle can cause even further problems, not to mention the nighmare you will go through if you severely damage tendons and such. Depending on the severity, you may even need surgery, or have your foot amputated. There really is no GOOD reason to break your own ankle, and you could probably find a better alternative. Here is the true point of my writing:What can or will happen if you break your own ankleWill hurt like hellWill have severe swelling and bruisingWill have to keep your foot elevated for like everWill look dumb for breaking your own ankleCan result in surgeryCan result in amputaionCan result in a whole series of complicationWill result in thousands of dollars worth of medical expenses (BREAKING AN ANKLE AINT CHEAP)You WILL regret it:)

What hurts more a broken ankle or a broken wrist? ( in ur opinion )?

a broken heart.

Why does my broken ankle hurt worse in my walking boot than without it?

I twisted my ankle outside Tuesday night and the x-rays showed no break. Had a CT scan done Thursday morning and I have a non-displaced avulsion fracture of my posterior tibia. My family physician gave me an order for a half-height walking boot (mid-calf, not all the way to the knee) which I filled yesterday and have been wearing since. I'm not supposed to see the orthopedic specialist until Tuesday morning.

When I wear the boot I am not putting any weight on it. When I move my leg to situate myself or when I'm on my crutches, my ankle feels like it can still move left and right within the boot and it KILLS and hurts much worse than when I'm not wearing the boot at all. In fact, I had to take the boot off to sleep last night because I could feel my ankle bending inside again when I lay on my side to sleep, whereas I feel no pain at all if I lay on my side without the boot.

Any suggestions or advice? The boot is as tight as I can possibly made it and feels nice and snug.

How come my ankle hurts really bad with a broken toe?

Inflamation causes pain due to the stretching of the swollen tissues. According to you and for whatever reason, your ankle is also swollen, so that is why it hurts. I'm assuming your doctor prescribed anti-inflamatory meds for your injury, but it's been 3 weeks since your accident..,so you may be out of medication. If your mother won't take you to your doctor, take anti-inflamation meds such as tylenol, ibuprofen, aspirin, or whatever you take for fever or pain. I hope your mother changes her mind and listens to you.
Good luck..!
