Does alcohol help social anxiety?

I have agoraphobia and generalized anxiety disorder...UNFORTUNATELY alcohol does help....we feel uninhibited , not on Display, and 'like everyone Else' HOWEVER it INCREASES anxiety the next day....you know that terrible feeling of guilt, even if u didn't do anything f*ed' up that night. the pill that helps me is ATIVAN 2mg. tabs 4 times a day or as needed. it like xanax. I LOVE my alcohol to and prolly agree 100% w/ what ur saying, but ativan has helped so i dont feel the need to drink certain days....and if i do i really dont feel the need to excessively drink. good luck

Does alcohol help calm anxiety and guilt?

Alcohol may temporarily rid you of anxiety, but in the long run it will only make things worse. And as for guilt....no way. When you wake up wondering what you did, who you offended and how stupid you looked, guilt gets taken to a whole new level.

Please don't think that I am preaching. I'm 30 years old and if anything I love my wine too much. There have been days when I'm stressed out and driven to drink, only to say and do things that make me feel stupid and feel like crap all day the next day. Its a vicious cycle. Having a few drinks with friends is a lot of fun, but you are already talking about doing it for the wrong reasons (self medication) which is a huge red flag indication of future problems.

Moderation and state of mind is key. If you are having emotional problems speak with a counselor and get the proper treatment and medication. I have way too many friends who have tried to self medicate and not lasted long for this world.

Would alcohol help my anxiety and make me more confident and calm when speaking, if I was to say have one glass of whiskey?

Since I was a2a, no. Public speaking is apparently one of the most common causes of anxiety. Anxiety is an emotional response to perceived threat, and allows one to survive an attack by preparing the body for physical confrontation, but it becomes problematic when irrational.Anxiety disorder is twice as common in females as it is in males. Other reasons for elevated risk are being under 35, having a mental disorder, or having a chronic disease. Those who engage in vigorous physical exercise have been found to be less susceptible to anxiety, and sleep and diet have an effect. Medication can help to manage the symptoms psychological and physical symptoms, but medication is known to work better with psychotherapy; either exposure therapy (confronting the fear in a therapeutic setting) or cognitive therapy (identifying and addressing the cause).http://www.apa.org/topics/anxiety/http://www.webmd.com/anxiety-pan...

I have a psychologist for my depression and anxiety and i want to get a job but i get especially scared of interviews and working. My mom told us (my psychologist and i) that she was also extremely shy and anxious and when she got her first job every before work she would drink a few shots of tequila and she did that everyday where it got to a point where she got used socializing and comfortable in front of people that she didn't needed it anymore. you think its a band idea if i do that,i never tried it and i know im too young to drink it but im mexican and its normal at my age to drink a little its not a big deal as U.S. and im very responsible and im the most mature teen out any other teen, i dont like parties or all that stuff that teens do,

Why does alcohol make my anxiety go away?

This answer may be controversial:Is this ok sometimes?: I believe it is, however please read on:Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant. As such, it acts on the GABA receptors in the body. (GABA stands for gamba amino butyric acid) Many anti-anxiety drugs, for example, Valium and Xanax, target the GABA receptors as well and so do other drugs, like diphenhydramine which is the active ingredient in Benadryl (antihistamine) and the “PM” in Tyleneol PM and Advil PM. That is the reason Benadryl and the PMs make you sleepy—they slot into the GABA sites and depress the central nervous system which calms you down.So using alcohol MODESTLY to take the edge off anxiety is not, in my opinion, the worst thing in the world however, if used more than modestly for this reason, you would be better off tackling the underlying cause of the anxiety through introspection, lifestyle changes, or elimination of the source, assuming this is possible.Other things that might help either alone or in combination with alcohol used modestly, are yoga, mindfulness and psychological therapy.I am not a fan of drugs. If this is short term, I recommend taking GABA instead. It is an amino acid, readily available at health food/whole food/vitamin shops and inexpensive. St John’s Wort also targets the GABA receptors, but I recommend using the amino acid that fits perfectlyThe article below from the National Institutes of Health provides further info. The role of GABA in anxiety disorders.

Does alcohol reduce social anxiety?

It’s a little tough to answer but I’ll have a go. Others might disagree with me this is only my opinion. When dealing with stressful days or nervous situations, you may be tempted to have a glass of wine or a beer to calm your nerves. However, drinking alcohol, especially heavily and over a long period of time, can actually increase your anxiety.Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can also have noticeable physical and mental consequences. Over time, consuming too much alcohol can lead to blackouts, loss of memory, and even brain damage (especially if it causes other health problems, such as liver damage). These issues can create more anxiety as you cope with their symptoms.Using alcohol to cope with social anxiety disorder can be dangerous. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), about 7 percent of Americans have this form of anxiety.Alcohol affects everyone differently. It can cheer you up after a rough day or make you feel more sedated. Discuss these concerns with your doctor first to see if alcohol is safe for you.Treatment may depend on the type of anxiety you have. If you have social anxiety or a social phobia, therapy may work best to reduce your levels of anxiety (combined with a medication such as sertraline, or Zoloft). If you have generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), an ongoing feeling of worry or stress without a specific cause, your doctor may recommend learning behaviors or skills to help you stop avoiding activities because of anxiety (known as cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT), or talking about your anxiety with a therapist. Each type of medication treats anxiety in a different way. Antidepressants may be taken every day to help treat anxiety, while benzodiazepines are generally used for temporary relief from uncontrollable feelings of anxiety. Talk to your doctor to decide which type of medication is best for you.

Why does alcohol improve my anxiety? And how can I be like this sober?

Many people find that alcohol calms the nerves and reduces stress, and especially when it comes to anxiety. In many cases, people report that when they drink alcohol they feel a sense of release from the nagging from their inner voice. This inner voice can also be described as the subconscious mind when it is restless or over stressed. When this happens, we can feel overwhelmed and emotional. It seems that no matter how hard we try, nothing seems to be good enough. This is the nasty spiral of anxiety. But if we don’t know any different, we can fall into the trap of using alcohol to hush the noise of our subconscious mind. And it works very well, at least for a short time. But the problem is that it never lasts forever, and the problems always come back. This is The Irony of Using Alcohol to Relax.Often the cause of the anxiety is a suppressed emotion or some sort of unresolved issue. I could be something that happened yesterday or it could be something from a distant memory. It could even be from an issue that occurred during childhood.Ultimately, we have to figure out how to deal with the suppressed emotions from our past, and unfortunately, alcohol does not help. But in order to get to the source of our hidden feelings and emotions we need to change some habits that we use to cope with our daily issues. What is your inner voice saying to you right now? If you find that you rely too heavily on Alcohol to Relax, then the first step is to stop drinking and address the cause of the anxiety.
