Why is The Alchemist a good book?

Why is The Alchemist a good book? What I personally think is that the book is a bit over-rated.If you ask me to summarise the book in a few sentences, I would like to keep it this way:-It is the story of a young guy who leaves his house in search of his dream. On his way, he meet many people who, knowingly or unknowingly, teach him something. He meets a thief, a King, an Englishman, an Alchemist and a beautiful girl. He finally reaches his destination. His dream comes true. The entire book focuses on one belief only - “If you really want something, the whole universe conspires to help you”.What I didn’t like about the book is that the boy gets whatever he wishes for. Only good things happen to him in his way. Though his money was stolen thrice and he was beaten to death once, but only those are not the obstacles you face while searching for your destination. He never felt demotivated. He fell in love with a girl at the very first sight of hers. Surprisingly, she returned his love too. Does this happen so easily? I don’t think so. A man was there who could turn lead into gold. It was too hard for me to swallow that. He could talk to the sun and the wind. He got magical powers out of nowhere. He dreamt of a hidden treasure and it became true. He became rich, got married to the most beautiful girl, and all these so easily. Really unacceptable.I may be wrong in interpreting the book wisely, but that’s what I conclude by reading the book.

Is "The Alchemy of Finance" a good book for investors?

No it isn't  . The book is not readable for a normal guy who hates jargons, economics, money supply and macro-stuff. I get the basics of what Soros says in the first few pages- "Theory of Reflexivity". It may be a good book to understand the currency markets and is also an excellent history book.I think Soros is an extraordinary individual and has a fine acumen of international markets, monetary policy etc. However, I am an investor and like to focus on books that help me how to pick stocks. I have a long list of books which I want to read most of which are related to value investing. I have attempted reading "The Alchemy of Finance" at least 4 times and have covered close to 50-60% of the book. I gave up a couple of years back as I started focusing more on the aspects related to a company rather than macro-economic factors.

Why is the book The Alchemist so popular?

Because it tells you about the basic desires of a human heart. The Alchemist is an allegory throughout, layered with so many intricate concepts that one simply forgets to count. All of us have a passion within us, something that most people are quick to hide from the eyes of the world, either due to fear of failure or the fear of being laughed at. But the book tells how important it is to follow dreams (read, passions) without thinking of what would the world think. It is a story of different people, some conquered their fears and pursued their passions, others simply gave into the pressure and led a life of predictability and resistance to change. It tells you some universal principles that have existed since the existence of the world. Here are the most important ones:Law of attraction: In Rumi’s words, what you are seeking is seeking you.True love lets you follow your dreams: If what you have found was pure matter, it will be there even if you leave to come back. If it was only a trick of light then it wouldn’t be worth staying for.Re-framing the perspective: Life will not always treat you kindly, that is the nature of it. But if you master the re-framing of your perspective, you will always find a way out of your gloom. Stephen R Covey has dealt this topic in much detail within his celebrated book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.Perfection is illusion, don’t wait for it: If you always wait for the perfect moment, the perfect way, you will get no where. Start. I repeat, just start. Trial and error is the most powerful way of learning.Fear is a bigger obstacle than the obstacle itself: The real world obstacles are much smaller usually than the ones in your mind. Don’t let your brain fool you.The Alchemist is a quick read, give it a go if you haven’t yet.
