Read any good books lately?

I've also been having a lot of trouble finding good books, but I've kept myself temporarily entertained with this website: http://www.fanfiction.net/. If you remember a book you enjoyed, you can go to this website and read what other random authors have to say about what they think should happen. Some are plain trash, but others are just as good or better than most published books. Just check it out; you might find you like it.

What does “The man who doesn’t read good books has no advantage over the man who can’t read them.” mean?

This is much relevant today... It means a man who does not read good books, is as good as a man who hasnt read books. That implies bad books teach you nothing.Good books contain things that we should learn and appreciate. If you read a useless book then you gain nothing. YOur mind does not increaes in strength and ability, which can only happen by reading good books. So its absolutely useless to read trash books. You are where you were before you raed such a book!

It is very relevant today when there are thousands of writers and so many many books to choose from. One has to be clever to pick up good from bad. it takes taste and knowledge, both acquired by reading Good Books.

What are some good books I can read to learn about Taoism?

What are some good books I can read to learn about Taoism?Mostly I’m not so interested in philosophy, so my reading runs more towards the pragmatic. You can certainly read the Tao Te Ching (Lao Tzu) and Chuang Tzu, personally I found them quite hard to understand, and not of much use. I’ve studied enough languages and read enough to know that I have no idea what they really mean.I do recommend you have a look at the I Ching, it won’t explain anything nor particularly make sense, but if you use it for a while you will learn a lot. To me, that’s very Taoist. And maybe that’s my way to understand (?) Taoism.I’m not much of a fan of the old Chinese texts. They will tell you that you should “watch the moon rise over the cinnabar fields.” I haven’t found that sort of thing to be very helpful. Those are specific instructions for an alchemical meditation practice, but, of course, written in code. So, skip the translations, even if they are by Eva Wong. I do like her books, and Livia Kohn’s. Those are generally more academic, more historical. Neither Wong or Kohn will teach you meditation or any specific practices. They are very tantalizing. Then there are books by people like Mantak Chia, Bruce Frantzis, Jerry Alan Johnson - which are mostly ‘how to’ - specific meditations, specific movements, dietary practices. Five element theory. Meridians. Energy (qi). The three burners and the three dan tien. Qigong (from the outside, in), neigong (from inside outwards). Self cultivation.Mantak Chia is very controversial for openly teaching many secret practices, including single and dual cultivation (sexual practices). There are lots more people out there teaching and writing. I don’t know much about Damo Mitchell or Derek Lin. I’m sure there are more.

What are some good books I can read to learn more about California wines, and a good book detailing wines from all over the world? I'm looking for books that offer a good overview.

Howdy,   A great book that covers global wine very comprehensively is Jancis Robinson's "Oxford Companion  to Wine". However, it's written like an encyclopedia so not really a page turner...  "Sunlight into Wine" is a great reference on growing grapes, but very technical.  Steve Heimoff's "A Wine Journey along the Russian River" and "New Classic Winemakers of California" are narratives and much easier to digest.  Other fun/compelling books on wine are "Billionaire's Vinegar" and "Shadows in the Vineyard".   "Sideways" is a better book than it was a movie also.

How can I read any book online free?

Many, but by no means all, ebooks are available legally from your local library. Some books are available for a very low price through BookBub and similar services. If your book review blog, or column, or whatever, becomes influential, many publishers will send you more books than you could begin to read. But all books for free? Why don’t you think that authors’ and publishers’ work is worth paying for? They’re generally as poor (or poorer) than you are. They worked hard, and apparently, you want to use some of that work. Pay for the books you want, if you can’t find a legal copy.
