Any Songs/albums/bands

Which bands have songs with same name as the album name, and the band's name?

Here is a classic: The group Kool & The Gang had a song Kool & The Gang on their debut album Kool & The Gang. The album was released in 1969, though the group was formed in 1965. Over a half century later they are still going strong with four original members and many other long-timers.One example few people know and even fewer would admit they know, Village People had a song called Village People on their first album, Village PeopleThis one does not quite qualify but I thought it is worth mentioning, the band Chic has a song called “Chic Cheer” on their album C’est ChicUPDATE February 14, 2019:Along with fellow British metal bands that have been mentioned by others such as Black Sabbath, Motörhead and Iron Maiden, Angel Witch also had a song of the same name on their debut album of the same name.UPDATE February 17, 2019:Another band that, like Chic, had an album and song with nearly but not quite the same name as the band itself is The S.O.S. Band. They had an album called S.O.S. and on that album they had a song called S.O.S. (Dit Dit Dit Dash Dash Dash Dit Dit Dit).

Are there any anti-atheist rock bands/songs/albums?

Celtic Frost, Mayhem and Gorgoroth are the best christian metal bands out there.

What are some depressing grunge bands / songs / or albums?

Those bands are a little poppier than many of the other grunge bands from the time, but you sound like you'd enjoy Pearl Jam a fair amount (stick to any of their albums from Ten through Yield; avoid just about everything afterward except the singles).

If that works for you, you might also want to check out Mother Love Bone (the band that later morphed into Pearl Jam), Temple of the Dog, Screaming Trees, Mad Season, the first two or three Hole albums, and Soundgarden.

Should you decide you want to get into some of the rougher, edgier stuff, go back and check out bands like Tad, Mudhoney, Green River, and pretty much any band who was on Sub Pop before 1993.

Any psychedelic grunge bands, songs, or albums?

Soundgarden's whole Superunknown album was like that. And like the other guy said Alice in Chains' self titled album is kind of like that too.

Check out-

Alice in Chains: "Head Creeps" and "Sludge Factory"

and

Soundgarden: "4th of July" and "Limo Wreck"

What are some great songs / albums / bands / singers to listen while drinking whiskey?

I started this conversation with some friends last week. But it makes sense to hear ideas around the world.By 'whiskey' I mean to bourbon, so bluegrass and country music are the obvious choices, along blues of course. But it's too broad. Trying to have some whiskey soundtrack, surely there's great music I haven't remembered, haven't associated, or simply haven't heard yet.I can guarantee that I'll try every tip along the next drinking sessions (starting tonight).

What album/song/band puts you in a good way?

First off, anything by Eels, Elbow, Jens Lekmen - these are three of the warmest most humanistic artists out there. Even when delving into darker subject matter, as especially Eels are prone to do, the do so with such a sense of empathy that it’s hard not to be pulled into compassion of it all.For sheer good time music, I obviously love funk, but one super silly dance band that is just now hitting the scene, Australia’s Confidence Man, has a debut album out - Confident Music For Confident People - that is as start to finish fun as anything I’ve heard in years, as long as you’ve got a taste for hyperactive Junior - Senior / LCD Soundsystem dance-rock/Disco and Mean Girls/Heather’s styled bitch-goddess camp.

What song/album/ band was way ahead of its time?

The best example that I can think of is Big Star. This was an early-mid seventies rock and roll group from Memphis, Tennessee that defied a lot of boundaries and set the template for many 80s college rock bands (i.e. R.E.M., Let’s Active, The dB’s, and many more). They were the largely ignored during their own time and never made the charts, but many rock critics raved about them. The singers were Alex Chilton, who was a member of the Box Tops in the 60’s and later had a decent solo career; and Chris Bell who was rediscovered by fans of this music later in the 90's.Their first album: Titled #1 Record came out around 1972 and was superb, but hard to find in record stores around the nation due to bad distribution from the record label. Same with Radio City, the follow up in 1973. Shortly after it’s release the record company, Stax, went bankrupt and the original records were warehoused (only a scant few being sent to radio stations and critics and lucky fans). After sessions for a third album turned out disastrous, the band was no more. in ‘75, Chilton went solo and the other members fragmented into different directions. This third album didn’t come out until the late 70’s in UK. For years the original Big Star albums were highly collectable fetching high figures on all continents. It would be decades before reunions would occur and the surviving members would play live shows again concurrent with post-Big Star lives.I think what made this group stand out so much was how they combined Beatles rock n’ roll with tight harmonies and gorgeous melody. All keeping it within the framework of a solid four piece band (except on the last album). They did this at a time when this format of music was passe and going out of style.Listen to R.E.M. Chronic Town, Murmur, and Fables of the Reconstruction; The dB’s, Chris Stamey, Mitch Easter, The Loud Family and Scott Miller, The Posies, even the Bangles and many others. You will hear how Big Star influenced a generation.
