What is your review of Blade (1998)?

I have a mixture of lukewarm and resounding feeling, for Wesley Snipes first appearance as Blade. Hate, nor even basic dislike has ever been on the cards, but just like in the case of many other movies, due to natural maturity I've been forced to re-evaluate the true merits of the 1998 blockbuster.Relative to myself, a great movie needs to have an air of democracy about it: not just the main character should be awesome, or inspiring, or trustworthy. And as awesome as it is, in the number of ways it is, I'm afraid that Blade is victim to the kind of syndrome that just so many films are (the Die Hard series, the Mission impossible series, Carpenter's The Thing being just a few examples).Blade's world is like Coppola's Dracula; the right tone, but injected with a general ideology of anyone besides the central characters being idiots. In all fairness, I could be scrutinised as to why I'm heaping this criticism on Blade when it more or less applies to so many action films; for one, Blade is a very specific hybrid of genre, and, to lead on from that point, Blade actually does a very good job of establishing the appropriate grimness and mortality of Blade's world.I take the gripes that I do against Norrington's aspiring masterpiece (yes, masterpiece) because there is so much working in the movie's favour: Snipes is as ideal for this character as Tobey Maguire was for Spider-Man, or Chris Evans for Captain America. He has the cold detachment, and the cruel, emotional sadism to portray the daywalker.Just as ideal is Stephen Dorff, as Deacon Frost: a more fearful, more useful presence than Tom Hiddleston as Loki (at least after the original Thor).Deacon Frost, the human-vampire, usurper of the traditional bloodline, does a lot of the movie's magic - a very credible threat to Blade.Blade gives me what I need, if not exactly what I crave.
