As a teenager, what are your school's dress codes and your opinions toward them?
I go to a fundamental school, so I believe the dress code is a little stricter than some of the other schools in my area.No tank topsNo shorts or jeans that go above the ankleSkirts need to be 2 inches above the knee or longerNo visible underwear (includes bra straps)No exposed midriffNo sheer clothingNo flip-flopsNo leggingsAnd so here’s a brief fun fact: I live in Florida.Florida.Sometimes—often—dress code is less of an issue because of personal expression and more because just stepping outside in jeans and a t-shirt makes people start to melt.But aside from intense heat as a motivator, it just doesn’t make much sense to me.Girls can wear skirts and dresses. Wonderful. Why can’t we wear shorts, then? Why can’t we wear capris/cutoff jeans? Why are we not allowed to show our ankles? This isn’t Victorian England.I can understand skirt length restrictions if only because it would be all too easy for mishaps involving a girl’s underwear, but at the same time there comes a point when you need to go “What?”A friend of mine was wearing a dress that was within dress code restrictions. It showed more when she was walking, because, well, she was walking. She was wearing a long jacket over it, one that was actually longer than the dress itself.She stormed into chemistry and threw her backpack down. “That old man who always stands outside his door tried to dress code me. He told me my dress was too short.”So a few seconds of debate about that, and she admits, “I’m not even… It was just weird. This guy’s old with gray hair and he’s telling me I’m showing too much leg. I didn’t like it. It felt like he was ogling me.”Enforcing a strict dress code is more likely to create problems than dispel them.And once you get past that—it’s the reasoning that bothers me.We—mostly girls—can’t wear shorts, or tank tops, or show our bra straps, because it would distract boys from learning.You know what distracts me from learning? That freakishly tall kid who sits in front of me in pre-calc. The teacher refused to move my seat so I could see the board.You know what isn’t distracting? A girl wearing a tank top and shorts. It’s not our fault for wearing what we like; if the boys are legitimately distracted, maybe they can work a little bit harder on paying attention. There’s a difference between staring at a girl’s legs across the room and actually having your view of the board blocked by a 6′2″ monster.

How to stop dressing like a tomboy?
I've been sort of a tomboy ever since like 2nd grade. Now I'm a freshman and it's just sort of a habit. I always wear jeans and hoodies but everyone else in high school dresses nicely and I feel like I look like a slob :P I want to become more girly and grow out of the whole jean/sweatshirt thing everyday, but I just...can't. Tight clothes are uncomfortable and I feel like it would just be weird if people saw me trying to get girlier, because they know I've always been a tomboy. Everyone would probably be shocked. Plus I'm not even 5 ft so finding clothes that I like AND that fit me is really hard. I don't wear makeup (probably never will anyways though) or "hang out with the guys", but what makes me a tomboy is some of my interests and how I dress. A. How can I start becoming more girly and wearing nicer clothes? B. Where can I shop to gradually become less of a tomboy? Not too girly clothing though, I still want to dress casually. Keep in mind I'm 14 and don't fit into women's clothing...except maybe xs/xxs shirts. I'm like size 12 in pants, 12-14 for shirts, and 4 for shoes. Thanks for your help :) ** especially for summer clothes. I really need some ideas for (casual) tops and shorts. I don't like short shorts though. Thanks!

How to dress differently for males?
That's a bit more difficult, I'm not going to lie. Try experimenting with different kinds of coats: peacoats, trench coats...etc. And experimenting with different kinds/colors of tennis shoes, boots, flip flops...etc. There's some sites that let you design your own t-shirts online. Maybe buy a different-looking watch or a necklace with a guitar pick on it. Some guys wear plaid bermuda shorts. I think those make a guy look put together. Experiment with facial hair. Even having a little bit of stubble makes you look different. Basically just make your look your own.
