Doesn anyone know any hotel or motels that rent by the month in chicago that are reasonable?

Drip's responses are good, if you want to stay at some reasonably nice places.

If you are really in need of doing things cheaply, there are places called "single room occupancy" (SRO) hotels that are somewhat dicey places, often in shady neighborhoods. They often cater to people who are poor and have few resources; but occasionally offer places for transients to "hang their hats." For information on them, see http://www.srhac.org/

Also, many YMCAs offer inexpensive short-term housing, but they ain't glamorous.

How do hotels know if you smoked or vaped in the room?

We know by the smell and we may even see smoke coming out from under your door or from your window. While someone who smokes consistently outside may have some lingering aroma to their clothing and luggage, there’s a huge increase in odor when someone actually does it in the room. In most hotels staff can smell it in the halls outside your room and we may very well receive complaints from neighboring rooms or balconies. It’s a dead giveaway when we try to put your morning receipt under your door and you’ve blocked the bottom of the door with luggage or a towel. We also have to deal with folks in states where marijuana is legal thinking they can legally smoke marijuana in the rooms. Not so! Smoking is smoking and getting a contact high in the hall outside your room is going to going to lead to the night staff getting some calls that result in them coming a’knocking on your door.Which leads to the last point. Most of the time, we can’t tell if you’re vaping in the room, nor do we really care unless you are into some kind of heavily-flavored stuff with a strong scent or if the sprinkler system is really hair-triggered. Just please don’t make our jobs harder by being a jerk about it and vaping in public areas. The last thing we want to do is to have to confront you about it.

How can I find someone when I know their first name and the hotel they are staying in?

Many countries have Privacy legislation and many hotels have their own internal privacy policies that should prevent them from disclosing any details about their guests to other people. However, a lot of hotels do not have such policies or do not offer their employees sufficient training to make such policies effective. Given front desk staff are typically very focussed on being as helpful as possible to everyone, you may find some staff at some hotels will assist you to locate someone using just a first name and the fact they are staying at that hotel. You would need to provide a good excuse for not knowing any more details about the person you are trying to reach, but provided you have a reasonable excuse, some staff at some hotels might accept your reason and proceed to put you in contact with the person you are seeking. If the staff member has any common sense, they would take down your contact details and then offer to try to establish contact with the person you are seeking later, so that the person you are seeking can make the decision about whether or not they are prepared to make contact. If instead the staff member proceeds to immediately give out the other person's personal information, such as their room number or phone number, they could be assisting you to commit a crime, for example if you are stalker.

Can I check into a hotel if someone else has paid for it?

First, there is a difference between "booking" a room and paying for a room. Did they actually have their credit card charged online or did they just reserve the room with their credit card?Next, any competent hotel is going to ask to see the credit card and photo ID, verify it is in your name, and swipe it to get the best rates for processing of the credit card.If your friends parents booked the room and are not there, then they will not "usually" check you in. Why? How does the hotel know whether the room was booked by some teenager who got their parents card out of their Dad's wallet or Mom's purse to go have some fun with their friends?Or, how would the hotel know if it was just a stolen credit card number? The answer is they don't and if the hotel is smart, they won't let you check in unless the person paying for the room has signed ahead of time a credit card authorization form, complete with their full mailing address, contact information, copies of the front and back of the credit card and a photo ID, with a signature on the form that matches the credit card stating it's ok for this individual to charge the room (and any damages) to their card. That way if something does happen, the parents can't deny the charges to their bank because the hotel has all the appropriate documentation to give to their credit card processor verifying the parents authorized the charges. So after all the reasons why a well run hotel will not let you check in, be smart, call the hotel, have them send a credit card authorization form to the people saying it's ok to charge their card for the entire room charges (and damages if any), have that faxed or emailed back to the hotel so it's all OK before you arrive. Be sure to call the hotel's front desk manager, or hotel general manager, prior to arrival to make sure they received it and that there will be no issues with you checking in.Then be a good guest and not cause any noise disturbances, or trash the room, treat the room like you would at your grandmothers, and be respectful that this is someone else's' property who they worked hard to have a nice quiet place for guests to stay and you then will be welcomed back.
