If you had to watch one movie (or franchise like a trilogy) for a week straight, what would you pick?
The answer, like always, depends. Depends on how I wanted to be at the end of the week.If I wanted to stop loving my favorite trilogy of all time and be bored stiff by moments of film making which have enthralled me over repeated watchings extending more than a decade, I pick Bourne. And to be fair, I’d also have to watch the Legacy one with Jeremy Renner which is not Bourne at all, and the fifth movie which is unforgivable because not only does it mess with the story arc, it kills a beloved character.If I wanted to be stricken deaf and blind by non-stop exposure to clanging, clashing extremely loud sound effects and visual overload by the screen repeatedly reassembling itself in bright primary colours while the incomprehensible plot goes on and on in a separate compartment, I pick Transformers.If I wanted to be so seriously, stultifyingly, permanently brain-chemical altering bored by watching endless scenes of actors with solemn faces and ironed hair extensions moving in slow motion through dark forests that I’d have to prop my eyelids open with tooth picks in order to stay awake after the first three hours - which would only be half-way into the first movie - I’d pick LOTR. With the Hobbit to follow just in case a few neurotransmitters miraculously survived the first stultifying assault.But if I wanted to survive the week, with a few bad days to be sure, but with some hope of maybe one day enjoying some of my favorite movies again in the distant future, I pick MCU. Lots of stinkers if you include all the Marvel based movies: the Fantastic Four, the stand-alone Hulks, Ben Affleck’s DD. And not every X-Men was great, and I’ve always been bored by Cap’n America’s unwavering integrity and essential lack of interestingness. But there is safety in numbers: with all those options I wouldn’t have to watch the same thing over and over and over, and I could space the really good eight (Avengers, Deadpool, GotG, Thor Ragnarok) so there would always be something good to look forward to.
