What is the electric power system of Canada?

All power systems in Canada are 60Hz.  Domestic/commercial power is 120V, 1-phase.  This is what is used for things like computers, small appliances, etc. Household distribution is typically 120/240V split phase, and larger appliances (such as stoves or A/C units) will be 240V, single phase.  Some larger industrial tools also use 240V, single phase. Some commercial power systems will have 3-phase 120/208V systems which provide single-phase 120V for small appliances, and 240V single phase devices will work on the 208V L-N available in that system.Industrial low-voltage power will be 600V, three-phase, but a there will still be a lot of 480V, 3-phase systems because this is the standard in the US, and there is a much bigger choice of 480V/60Hz equipment because of that much larger US market.  Look for equipment which is NEMA rated, rather than IEC rated.

Can American Electric Power in WV cut your power off in the winter when your only heat source is electric?

You can find WV (and other state) disconnection policies here: http://liheap.ncat.org/Disconnect/discon... The operative dates for WV are between 12/1 and 2/28.

Many times the language you use with a utility representative makes a big difference. To say you want to delay the payment of your bill may make for an automatic refusal where suggesting a payment plan to start in a week may be acceptable. Also usually it is better to pay something than nothing even if you expect to make a full payment at a later date. Good luck with this.

Why are the Appalachian Mountains important?

The Appalachian mountains, a chain of three parrallel mountain ranges, namely the Blue Ridge, White Mountains and Red Mountains, lies atop one of the richest mineral deposits in the world. 25% of the world coal is mined in the Appalachians. Iron, zinc, cooper, lead and silver are some other important mineral resources. The iron and steel industry of USA and the North-eastern industrial belt or their prosperity to the eastern highlands. The Appalchian mountains, keep strong winds and cyclones from entering the interior prairies of the North American continent. In coordination with the Rockies, the two mountain ranges open the interior of NA to the influence of the Hudson Bay in the North and Gulf of Mexico in the South.Furthermore, the area between Newfoundland and Georgia in the Appalachians is home to the Piedmont plateau, a step valley that dumps into the Atlantic. Many short, swift flowing rivers have their sources the and are used for the generation of hydro electric power. The Appalachian valley is a magnificent sight seeing spot and brings in millions of dollars of revenue from tourism each year.

When was electricity first used in older towns?

Some towns in the US and rural areas did not have electricity until the 1930's, under Roosevelt's administration. The TVA, or Tennessee Valley Authority brought electric power through hydroelectric plants into the rural Appalachian south during the New Deal. What the earliest time there was electricity in small towns or rural areas, I don't know.

How long before we get a notice (electric bill)?

It depends on your utility company. I work for the local utility where I live and they send out a late notice one or two weeks after the bill is late. You do have a grace period but it's usually only a few days. A lot do not shut off until after the second bill was due. However where I work, they will not shut you off if you owe less than $100. In your case we are talking about 6 days so I don't think it's going to be a huge deal and do not think you will be cut. You might just call them though and let them know. They can always put a note in your account. Some also have payment arrangements. Also bear in mind they may have a late fee as well.

What is the need of a brake and an accelerator in a bicycle?

Bicycles are equipped with brakes to slow you down. Typically, each bike has a front brake and a rear brake. The front brake will do a better job slowing you down, but can cause you to go over the handle bars if you’re not careful. The rear brake tends to be safer for beginners, as there’s lower risk of crashing, but doesn’t brake as well. The only bicycles with accelerators on them are Class 3 Electric Bicycles which feature throttle power. The purpose of throttle power is to allow you to give your legs a rest from pedaling, whilst still moving forward.

How much of the coal generated energy could practically be replaced by natural gas sources in the US until 2030 and 2050?

The coal industry is in decline because coal is dirty to produce, dirty to burn and demanding to transport. All this makes it relatively expensive and generally undesirable.Gas is lighter on upfront investment, cleaner to produce and burn, and more flexible to use. But - gas prices are low right now and if they go up significantly over the years, it may become less attractive. There is another factor playing against coal. If you look at other countries that produced and used coal (UK, Germany, France), coal production declined because all the easy coal was used up, leaving only more and more expensive seams available. Once thriving mining areas with hundreds of thousands of workers declined and eventually shut down. Local governments tried to stabilise the situation, but even subsidies cannot support a declining mine for long. The US still has coal reserves that are relatively cheap to produce, but they won’t last forever. No mines do. They are in decline from the day they first produce. US coal production is in decline, and gas production is merely hastening the day when producing coal for power plants is history.

I want to go on a trip that's going to change my life - where and how?

What kind of experience will change your life will depend a lot on what sort of experiences you’ve already had. As a general guideline though, I’d suggest two very different possibilities.First, go somewhere completely different to your native area. By this, I don’t mean go on a package tour to a distant land. On the contrary, choose someplace that seems entirely foreign and, temporarily, live there. Even if you have only a week or two, don’t do the tourist thing. Instead, see it from a local’s point of view. Eat what they eat. Wear the clothing they wear. Travel the way they travel. If you can, volunteer your time to work alongside your local host, whether that means working on a farm or in an office. You will learn more about the world and more about yourself than you can imagine.Second, go on a solitude retreat. There are a great number of locales from which you can choose—mountains, prairies, deserts, etc. In the U.S., there are options in every state. This need not be an expensive venture. There are rough and rustic accommodations and fairly posh ones. Many operate on donations. The point is, spend at least a week with no one but yourself. Hike, read, listen to music, write, meditate, pray, etc. The point is to discover who you are when completely free of social influences. And yes, that does mean turning off your cell phone and swearing off social media and email. If you have family obligations that require you to be reachable, you can always set a time each day that you will check messages and/or arrange with retreat staff to notify you in case of an emergency.

How clean is rain water?

Clean enough. When I was a child, we lived in a small remote town. The town water supply was raw water, about the colour of weak milky coffee. Sometimes very tiny mussel shells, about 2 millimeters across would come out of the pipes. The water was pumped from the Town Weir, a small low dam or the Selma Weir, a slightly higher dam. It was not filtered and it was not chlorinated. If the town water was allowed to stand quietly for says, the mud would settle out of it leaving clear water on top. People usually did not drink this water but they used it for garden watering, toilet flushing and similar things. They drank rainwater. Our house had two water tanks, about 5,000 British gallons each. One was on a high stand and was filled from the town water supply. It was called a settling tank. The water from it was piped to the kitchen, the laundry and bathroom. All washing, bathing and dishwashing was done with this clear river water. The other was on a low stand and collected rainwater from the roof. This was the drinking water supply. No matter what was on the roof, bird droppings, dust etc it was washed into the rainwater tank and we drank it. We did not boil it first unless we made tea or coffee. A careful new mother might have boiled and cooled the water before giving it to a baby but older children got it straight from the rainwater taps, and sometimes like me they drank raw water straight from the garden tap.Even after we moved to towns with filtered, chlorinated water we drank tank water since nearly all houses then had rainwater tanks. All farmers out of town drank rainwater from their tanks and still do. If they were lucky they might have had a well near the house for other uses.We might have suffered digestive upsets from time to time but I do not recall many. Now I don’t know about your areas but nearly everyone in rural Australia uses stored rainwater for drinking.
