Architecture Workshop - Sacramento

Do all Indian students who study MS (electrical, computer, electronics) at California State University, Long Beach get a job? What if they do not get a job?

Well, according to me,  to get a job in any country including India, you have to perform in academics, interviews and present your skills effectively. You have to network with your friends, be abreast with job opportunities and work towards it from the day 1. As US is a market leader, the opportunities are there if you look at in a right direction with confidence and positive attitude.

Would you take $45k salary in Sacramento or $65k salary in San Francisco?

There is nothing like living in SF, it's one of America's finest cities, filled with culture and history. The problem with SF is a one bedroom apartment in the city is going to cost you at least 12-1400 dollars a month, and the rents only going to skyrocket even more because of gentrifacation(sp). Alexandra Pelosi made a great documentary about this on HBO Go. All the rich tech guys are moving into the city, raising prices of everything and pushing the culture out. Oakland and Union City are nearby, and a bit cheaper, but still quite expensive. SF is a very busy city.   In Sacramento, 1200 dollars can rent a 2-3 bedroom home, depending on the area. Downtown Sacramento is the most cultured and entertaining  part of the city, and a new arena is being built close to the state capitol, which will make downtown sacramento even more entertaining. Sacramento doesnt move as fast as SF, but its 90 minutes from SF, and also 90 minutes from lake tahoe. Its geographically in a good location, and I wouldnt be surprised if there was easy public transportation besides the mega bus being built in the next decade or two.  If you move to the bay area it will be more exciting, but you will have to stretch your money a lot more. If you move to Sacramento its less exciting, but 45k will take you a long way .

Is it worth it double majoring in Communications and English? I want to become a writer and work in entertainment, eventually becoming a college professor.

“Don’t half-ass two things. Whole-ass one thing.” — Ron Swanson. As someone who tried to double major in English and Mathematics, I endorse not double-majoring, unless you are 100% confident doing so will not negatively effect your performance in your primary major.

Is being a security guard considered a skilled job?

Generally, a security officer is considered an entry level position in the U.S. Your example of CCTV monitor is an entry level job within the security field, except for perhaps a casino where those monitoring must have some background in what they are monitoring for. Most security in the U.S. in unarmed, required by insurers, and there to provide a presence. With this notion in mind, not much is required, and the perception as result is quite low. This isn’t to say there is no opportunity past this, in fact, while one may start out with lower pay and status than a metropolitan police officer the opportunities in private security far exceed those in municipal or state law enforcement. Though one must be motivated to rise through the ranks in private security.I have never worked as a uniformed security officer, except for when I was a police cadet for a suburban department. However, I have a couple friends and associates that started out as mall, concert, and armored car security officers working jobs that paid little above minimum wage that now work as directors or vice-presidents for Fortune 500 companies.Sometimes I tell people I’m a security guard when they asked at an inappropriate time what I do for a living. Their pretentious attitudes cause them to sneer at the notion, for me it’s humorous. I laugh it off, when these rich pricks get their cage rattled, they want security, safety, someone to stand between them and the bad guy. Now who’s the schmuck?

What type of California property zoning code would allow for shipping container homes?

There’s no special zoning district for shipping container homes. Since they would be considered single family homes, they can be built on R-1 zoned parcels of land. R-1 zoning is the zoning code for single family residential properties. If you already have a property in mind and want to see what it is zoned, you can always check out the zoning maps for that city/county.Like Craig Weiler and Brady Westwater said, as long as the property follows the building codes/guidelines set by the city the land is located in, then you should have no problems building a shipping container home. With that being said, that doesn’t mean you can just buy a piece of land and plop a shipping container on it.Most likely you will need some kind of building permit to do it, which is a whole other animal that I am unfamiliar with.I found a link to a website that might be of use. From what it sounds like, you will definitely need a permit, and shipping container homes are more accepted where the municipality understands “nontraditional” homes like them.Hope that helps!

What are the odds of getting your first choice of FBI field office after graduating from Quantico?

The odds are pretty low of getting your first choice of field office, but there are many factors involved. Once at the Academy, New Agent Trainees (“NATs”) will be offered the chance to rank their preferences of all 56 field offices, from 1 - 56. Generally, if you rank NY, LA or San Francisco first, you significantly increase the odds of getting that choice because those offices are extremely large, and therefore in constant need of staffing, and are located in extremely high cost of living cities that most young agents can not afford to live comfortably in. The field office you get has nothing to do with your performance during the Academy as another answer has suggested. In fact, if you are not performing well at the Academy, you will not graduate. There are times when your previous background can lead to you being assigned to a Resident Agency (RA), which is a satellite location of a field office - for example, the Key West RA is a satellite office of the Miami Division, the Yuma RA is a satellite office of the Phoenix Division. These often remote posts require agents who are experienced and capable of working without a lot of support or back-up. They may be assigned to work Indian country crimes near distant and vast Indian reservations, or, to work drug and gang investigations in border towns in Texas. A New Agent Trainee who used to be a police officer or perhaps a military tactical soldier might get assigned to such an RA right out of the Academy. New Agent Trainees who list highly desirable offices at the top of their lists are competing not only against each other, but against very senior agents already within the FBI who have listed those offices on their preference lists as the office they want to go to when earn enough seniority after years in their career. That’s not to say that those desirable offices are staffed entirely by older agents, and a good mix is always desired, but it’s just harder for a NAT to get there. Those offices tend to be in warm weather locations with a more reasonable cost of living. Tampa, Charlotte, Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, Knoxville, Atlanta, and Mobile are examples. Here’s the bottom line: Please don’t become an FBI Special Agent if you are focused on being assigned to one particular field office, focus instead on the honor of carrying the badge and credentials regardless of where you carry them. I hope this helps.
