Are All These Companies Us Owned If Not Who Owns Them

Why do I see trains with other freight companies on rail lines that aren’t owned by them?

I live near the Canadian Pacific line that runs from Milwaukee all the way to La Crosse, WI and beyond. As far as I’m aware, that line is owned strictly by CP and no trackage rights have been granted to other companies, as most of the major companies (UP, CN and BNSF) have tracks in surrounding areas near Milwaukee and Chicago. I was railfanning the CP line the other day and saw a train with strictly BNSF locos. I also saw a train hours later that had strictly NS locomotives. Occasionally I’ll see trains with locos from multiple companies. Why is that? Are these locos being used by CP? Are they owned by the respective companies and just using CP’s tracks to get somewhere? Or is it something else?

What is the largest company owned entirely by one person?

It’s hard to say the largest companies that are actually owned by one person because once companies get to a decent scale there’s almost certainly going to be equity given to (or technically bought for tax purposes) by key employees. I used to work in private equity primarily acquiring lower middle market closely held business (EV’s from $100–500MM), either from entrepreneurs who wanted an exit or from second and third generations of families where no one wanted to run it, and even drawing from the entrepreneur started businesses (and we didn’t do much tech so we’re not talking VC backed) I can’t really think of more than a handful of companies that I looked at over the years that had one single owner. And while I didn’t do this many deals I must have looked at over 1000. Most of the time as you’re growing a company to that scale the capital structure on the equity side will have people slide into it.The largest company that’s kind of owned by almost one person (like the precision of that sentence?) is Koch Industries. It’s owned by the Koch brothers so it’s not exactly one person, but it almost is, and I think they hold something like 80%-90%. Most larger companies, and not even to the scale of the Kochs, are going to end up passing to heirs because it takes a long time to build a non-tech company to a large scale and that means that founder, even if he/she keeps 100% equity, will end up passing on and leaving it to others and since most people have more than one child, there’s more than one owner.I know of a lot of wealthy people who own 100% of an entity that invests in multiple holdings so technically they own 100% of the topco and that can be worth a lot in value, but they’ll have dozens of holdings below that where they’re minority investors.

If I own a BVI company and live in the US does my company owe taxes in the US?

It is impossible to accurately answer this without a lot more information about what the business does and how it operates. At a minimum it sounds like you have a CFC (controlled foreign corporation) and at least have a filing obligation of a Form 5471 Certain Taxpayers Related to Foreign Corporations Must File Form 5471.Certainly any compensation you receive working for the BVI company in the US, is US sourced income taxable and reported by you on your individual US tax return. If you are integral in the operations of the BVI company, then most likely that activity rises to the level that would require the BVI company to file Form 1120F | Internal Revenue Service. This is really something you should have a conversation with your CPA about.

Are there any american owned beer companys anymore?

Boston Beer Company, who makes Sam Adams, is still American, and is now the largest American brewer. Molson Coors Brewing is a Canadian-American company. They make Coors, Blue Moon, Killian's Irish Red and Keystone. Pabst Brewing Company is also American. They provide Pabst Blue Ribbon, Shlitz, and Old Milwaukee. However, they are farming out the manufacturing process to the UK based SABMiller (makers of Miller, Red Dog, Fosters, and several other international brands sold here and abroad). Make sure if you buy a beer that at least it's bottled here to provide jobs for Americans. The best bet is your local microbrew, or Sam Adams. Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company is a popular regional beer. So is D. G. Yuengling & Son, makers of Yuengling Lager, and other variations.
BORN AMERICAN!
BUY AMERICAN!!

If Citgo is a company owned by Chevez/Venezuela, why are we supporting he who hates us and buying his oil.?

Chevez of Venezuela hates the U.S. and is waging an eventual war (South America against the U.S.). Then why are we americans buying gallons of gas everyday at Citgo pumps? I guess we have gotten to the point that if it doesnt effect us now then who cares, we will worry about it when the time comes. Citgo is making Chevez richer and richer and he is buying weapons and building a million man army. Why? I think that question can be easily answered. We are so busy with Iraq that he is advancing his anti-U.S. slogan that is being "bought" by every one who is listening. Chevez is fighting hard for a seat on the U.N. Council. Again....Why? He is not even being challenged because we are far too stretched with Afganistan, Iraq, North Korea and Iran. Though Chevez is evil he is brilliant. In order to put a dint in his efforts we must boycott Citgo!!! Hate the Bush cabinet or not but in a few years just remember this....I told you so! Venezuela will wage war. How many more enemies will it take?

How does one look up patents by company that holds them?

There are a bunch of websites to help you search! I’ll quickly compile the list of sites already suggested by others and add a few that I have used but have not been mentioned:United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) - Assignment Search is a search engine that allows you to simply search by the company nameGoogle Patent SearchFreePatentsOnline.comPatexia.comPlainSite.orgPatentsSearcher.comRPXHowever, as Brandon noted in a prior post, searching a company name on these sites may not always yield results. Instead, the patent may be held by an investor, board member, or an affiliated company. That being said, I would suggest another option than the various search engines to ensure you don’t miss anything by “doing it yourself.” We at LawTrades provide entrepreneurs and inventors with a free patent search using one of our experienced patent attorneys. After the search, we'll provide you with a fixed fee price quote should you decide to hire the attorney to file the patent on your behalf. Since we don't have the overhead of traditional law firms, we're also about 60% more affordable than normal rates. We've helped entrepreneurs secure 100's of patents, so if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to reach out.
