Biodegradable plastic does exist, it is made from plant starch material. But it’s decomposition needs specific conditions like temperature, bacteria, humidity etc, which may not be available in most of the dump yards and landfills. So even through we have biodegradable plastics, their disposal become as issue like the non-biodegradable one.More over many companies market their products saying they are biodegradable, while on part of the plastic is made up of biological material. So the best thing to do is start reducing our plastic usage than looking for alternatives. Reusing things is always a sustainable choice rather than producing thing for single time usage and then processing it again to dispose off. We are 7.4 billion people and growing like anything, in this scenario reducing resource usage is of prime concern, if we want to leave some resources and a better earth for the coming generations.

With rising demand and more efficient production processes, increasing volumes of bioplastics on the market and oil prices expected to rise again, the costs for bioplastics will soon be comparable with those for conventional plastic prices.

The polythene bag ban is not successful in India because, it is badly conceived and not being executed properly.A few months ago, our town also banned single use plastic bags, but it's use is as widespread as before. The ban exists only in the rulebooks. The reason plastic ban anywhere has failed is due to the following reasons :No practical alternatives - Once plastic bags are banned, what will replace it? Paper bags are vulnerable to water, cloth bags are expensive and corn starch bags are not available in large numbers.No restriction on manufacturing - Only the use of plastic bags is banned but not the manufacturing of bags. The most effective way to ban plastic is to prevent it from being manufactured, but the authorities have not done it. Factories keep manufacturing plastic bags and people keep using it one way or the other.Lack of enforcement - The ban is not being enforced. We simply do not have enough police to keep a check on all plastic usage.Indifference from the people - Due to lack of awareness about the long term benefits of plastic ban and the unavailability of alternatives, people are slow to change.
