How does running in cold weather affect the respiratory passageways and the lungs?

Notice there are two changes for the respiratory system to get use to. This causes them to announce they are being over-worked.

By examining the two causes, this could allow you to correct them enough not to allow such over-worked feelings to happen and allow for strength development to continue.

First the change of to coldness is rapidly getting transported to an area naturally warm. Second the running starts making the respiratory system work harder just to balance itself along with the other body's now more over emphasized motions.

In normal cold conditions and normal activity conditions, the lungs stay warm by trying to work with less exertion because it sensing a change. Thus this sets up a rythm that stays quite and slowed.

Now if trying to pace your runs and breathing habits to allow you to do the same, after you get use to this self control you will be allowed to last much longer running not getting the over-worked signal to happen.

What gear is best suited for running in cold weather?

As Francesco said, it depends on how cold. It also depends on you personally. I tend to run hot so I will not dress as warmly as some others do. It also depends on your own definition of cold. I have seen people running in Japan in +32C sunshine wearing tracksuits. If it’s sunny and calm, I’m in shorts and a singlet in +15 or warmer. I avoid running in +30.I have run as cold as -30C. My outfit for those conditions starts with a thin polypro base layer. I add Helly-Hanson heavyweight merino wool tights and a medium weight fleece as a mid-layer. The top layer is a Sugoi Firewall jacket and Sugoi Firewall tights. Socks are DeFeet “Woolie Bullie”, a 3/4 length wool sock made for cycling. Fleece gloves under shell mitts for the hands, fleece balaclava overtop of a merino wool balaclava for the head. I use normal running shoes, Brooks Adrenaline. Some people would dress more warmly for those conditions. Most would not run at all. The preparation is a PITA but I like cold weather runs.If you live in a climate like mine, there is a huge range of what I consider runnable conditions, from +25C to -30C. +10 and sunny is shorts and t-shirt weather for me. Conditions worse than that require a variety of clothing. I have various weights of running tights, base layers, socks, etc that I combine based on experience. If you want to run in cold weather, you will need to experiment too.My advice is simple: you should be comfortable about 1 km into a cold run or 2 km into a very cold run. If you are comfortable just starting out, you have overdressed, and you will be too hot for the bulk of your run. If you never get comfortable you have underdressed.

Warmest, thinnest, least expensive thermal clothing?

A bit hard to answer since you don't describe what activities you plan to do with it.

Personally, I like anything made with Polartec Windstopper fleece, especially the stretch type, for active sports. I use it for cold weather hiking, cross country skiing, kayaking and working outdoors. REI and LL Bean stock various styles of clothing in it and Marmot, Patagonia and Mountain Hardwear are some other manufacturers that make clothing out of it. It is not cheap but it is light, thin, comfortable, wicks moisture away and blocks wind chill heat loss better than anything I ever owned. Plus it wears incredibly well and machine washes easily. Best bang for the buck of any thermal fabric, in my experience (and I go outside in the cold a LOT -- I have camped out in a tent in temps as low as 20 below zero Fahrenheit and worked construction in windchill temps of almost 50 below.)

For socks I prefer wool socks by Smartwool or Bridgedale. You can often find these socks discounted at off-price shops like Marshalls and TJ Maxx. In fact, I have occasionally found Polartec windstopper items (vests, jackets, gloves, hats) at those shops but it's rather rare. Both Campmor.com and Sierratradingpost.com sometimes have good deals on Windstopper items. You may also find military surplus made of WIndstopper nowadays but I can't guarantee it would be high quality.

Is it bad to run in cold weather?

I am proof you can run in the cold--Yesterday I was out when it was -18 out and -25 with windchill, I dress in a warm winter coat, double layer my pants and wear a face scarf and hat and mitts and I'm warmed up (believe it or not) pretty quickly.

I actually find I breathe easier in the cold air, less polution- I have asthma and I barely use my inhaler while out so far in the winter but summer I'm needing it 3-4 times.

Being out in the cold does not make you get a cold but if you don't rest your body when you need it, your immune system does go down. Aside from yesterday coming home with frozen eyelashes (because that was the only spot showing) I was highly pschyed out.

What clothing layers are best suited to waiting outside in cold weather?

How much would you dress yourself clothes, you still freeze, if you do not move. The upper layers clothes protect only the skin from frost. But it will not save you from the cold. The body is warmed by the muscles of the body when they do some work. They release the heat of the blood and the blood carries the heat throughout the body. If you are sleeping on the street, you will die in an hour, even if you are wearing 3 layers of clothing. If you work on the street physically, you will not get freeze, on the contrary, you will be hot, even if you are dressed in 1 layer of clothing.

Sweatpants while running?

Well, if you're female your best bet would be to wear tights, they are tight fitting and many keep you very warm. If you're a guy, they make pants very similar to tights, with a looser upper half, and by the ankles they're normally pretty tight with a zipper, or you can wear normal tights too. Sweatpants can be worn, but they might get annoying since they're heavier and the legs might rub against each other. If they're all you have they shouldn't be that bad. Basically, tighter pants tend to be more comfortable for running, but it's all up to personal preference.

Underarmour and other similar shirts made specifically for cold weather are really good for the cold, especially since they can be layered with other shirts. I normally wear an underarmour shirt and depending on how cold it is, an extra long sleeve shirt or two. Hoodies have the same problem as sweats with being bulky and can be uncomfortable. The heavier the clothes, the more weight you're carrying, and you just feel bulkier. So again, tighter clothes tend to be more comfortable.
