Is it illegal to give someone medication, antidepressants for example, without their knowledge and consent?
Yes, it is illegal. It is both a crime and could lead to a civil action*.Causing another person to ingest a medication without a person’s consent may be charged as a crime in a number of different ways. The most severe crime is homicide. If a person who has been given an anti-depressant against their will dies (from an overdose, accident or suicide) and the cause of death can be shown to be the anti-depressant then the person who gave the victim the medication would be found guilty of homicide/murder.This is not far-fetched as anti-depressants can cause people to be suicidal, some cause people to be tired/not coordinated and have accidents and some could be fatal - as all medications can - in the wrong dosage. Even if a the victim does not die, lesser crimes might be infliction of great bodily injury and battery.Giving a person medication not prescribed to them, that they do not consent to ingesting, is poisoning. If actual harm is done as a result of taking the medication, the victim may successfully sue the person who gave them the medication in a personal injury suit and recover damages.Causes of action in a civil case might include wrongful death, battery/medical battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress, among other claims. Since the civil case would be based on an intentional act, rather than a negligent act, it is more likely to result in a favorable award to the victim. In short, do not give another person medication. If this has been done to you, you may want to contact the police regarding the criminal charges and/or a personal injury lawyer regarding potential civil claims.Note: This a general response to be used for entertainment purposes only. This response is not intended to be a substitute for actual legal advice which you should obtain from a licensed attorney in your jurisdiction based on the facts of your specific, personal situation.* Based on laws common in the United States, laws of specific U.S. states and laws of other countries may be different.
What makes a drug legal or illegal?
It's whatever a government decides. And that decision is based on several things:How harmful/helpful the drug might be, whether it would be more widely used if legal rather than illegal, how widespread the use is in its current legal/illegal state and how much popular support there is for it being changed to being either legal/illegal, what any powerful lobbies (Big Alcohol, Big Tobacco, Big Pharma) might think about it, and what effect on how people are going to vote for you and your party will be if you or your party take a stance on the drug being legal or illegal.- MJM
Whats the difference between MDMA and Legal Anti depressants?
MDMA (street name: almost always called Ecstasy, Ex, or simply E) is not an anti-depressent, its a dangerous and illegal street drug. If you took Ecstasy every day for depression you would end up much worse then you were before you started taking it. The drug is considered a "psychedelic amphetamine" which means it speeds up your body and even causes mild hallucinations in some people. The MDMA will produce a speedy and euphoric effect that will only last about 2 hours and leave you extremely depressed and unhappy afterwards, you will need increasingly heavier dosages to get the same effect (some people will take many pills at once to get the same effect as one did the first time.) Something else to consider is if the pill you buy even contains MDMA. There are tons of fakes on the market and some contain very dangerous drugs and chemicals (DXM, large doses of caffiene, poisonous substances, perscription medication, allergy medication,etc..) MDMA pills tend to be addictive and very expensive (between 10-30+ US dollars per pill) and often exhaust a users financial means very quickly. There have been studies to show that MDMA and MDA cause permanent brain damage. There have been many deaths related to poison pills, overdoses, dehydration, heat stroke, etc.. Ecstacy is classified as a schedule 1 narcotic in the US, this means it is a felony to buy, posess, use, and sell the substance. Legal anti-depressants are made especially for depression as the name implys. However, there are many different types of anti-depressants and they work in different ways. One of the most popular types is a SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibiter) it works by causing your brain to produce more serotonin then it was making naturally. This causes the original chemical imbalance to be corrected to normal levels, thus making you feel better. Another popular type is the TCA (Tricyclic) these inhibit the re-uptake of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine, dopamine, or serotonin by nerve cells. This also causes a patient to feel better. Both types of medication are safe to take over a prolonged period of time and both take as long as a month to build up in the system enough to cause the intended effect. These drugs should only be taken when perscribed and monitored by a doctor (preferably a psychiatrist) Hope this helps!
Are painkillers legal or illegal drugs?
according to this article I saw on wikianswers "the difference between legal and illegal drugs is that one is safe to use and the other will put you in prison" and I thought that that was too general. because I had a friend who took painkillers and got hooked and long story short she wound up in jail. So my question is if abused are painkillers considered illegal or is it the fact that she forged a doctors note that got her in jail? (which I know that is illegal)
What is a hallucinogen, a stimulant, and a depressant?
These are all types of drugs in one form or another. Hallucinogen is an umbrella term, meaning this includes both stimulants and depressants but mainly depressants. A hallucinogen is a drug that causes hallucinations. Examples include LSD and different types of mushrooms. A stimulant is a drug that stimulates your body, you are more aware, alert, jumpy and fidgety, your heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration increase, often elevate your mood, dilate your pupils and decrease appetite. Legal stimulants are caffeine (coffee and soda), nicotine (cigarettes and cigars), energy drinks, and such. Illegal stimulants include meth(amphetamine)s, cocaine, crack, ecstasy. A depressant is a drug that overrelaxes your body, you are less aware and more susceptible to others' influence. Your heart rate and BP slow down, and you can lack coordination. Examples include marijuana, GHB, date rape drugs, Valium, tranquilizers, sleep medicine, muscle relaxers, and alcohol.
Is Prozac illegal in the UK?
You get prozac off your doctor, if your having problems make an appointment, they have heard it all before so don't worry, you won't shock them or they won't see you any differently and at the same time you get the help you need. I self harmed when i was younger and ended up on prozac but i found they made me aggressive at times especially when i had a drink, so i changed to different tablets which agreed with me better. And your right you can't help it, but you can get help for it, so please make an appointment, you'll feel better for it afterwards. I'm completely cured now K x
Are Anti-Depressants just a legal way of making a person feel good about themselves?
Generally anti-depressants don't make people feel good about themselves. Rather, they help prevent people from feeling bad about themselves. If you are already content, then anti-depressants aren't likely to do anything for you. But if you are depressed, then they can help. Anti-depressants aren't happy pills. However, there are some drugs (most of which are illegal) that can make you feel happy for short periods of time. Unfortunately these drugs usually have a major side effect of ultimately screwing your life up. ---------- Since you don't do drugs, either legal or illegal, you should consider yourself lucky. I consider myself lucky that I don't have to wear eye-glasses or contacts, I have good vision. I also consider myself lucky that I was able to get away from the illegal drugs that I once did. Unfortunately I do feel that I need the antidepressants I take. Without them, I think it is probable that I would have committed suicide by now.
What is the difference between using antidepressants and illegal drugs?
The difference is mainly legal. While self-medicating is frowned upon in the psychiatric community, it is more heavily frowned on by the law. Anti-depressants are typically SSRIs (Selective Serotonin re uptake inhibitors) Meaning they affect the way compounds known as dopamine and Serotonin are received by your brain. Illicit, or illegal drugs work a little differently. The closest in effect would have to be the THC found in Marijuana, which significantly changes levels at which the aforementioned compounds are released. Ecstasy raises levels of many chemicals in the brain, epinephrine, dopamine, etc. But when the drug leaves your system, the brain doesn't know how much to create, thus worsening your depression. I would always recommend speaking to a doctor before taking any medication. Marijuana would be your safest choice, if you don't want to procure a legal form of anti-depressant. Colin B. (M.D) (PhD)
Which is worse for you, antidepressants or street drugs?
Depends on which street drug. Is heroin better for you than Lexipro? God no. Is weed? Yes, probably. Only because it's a natural substance as opposed to a chemical.Antidepressants affect different people in different ways, just like street drugs do. I have been on Lexipro for 6 months and I have gained weight, lost my sex drive, and sleep all the time. My friend has been on the same drug for the last 2 years and she has had none of the symptoms I have. On the other hand, I can smoke three joints in one sitting and not really feel anything, but my friend would be asleep after two puffs. So it really all depends on how your body reacts to these things. Explaining your symptoms to your doctor is always important when taking a new antidepressant, because a symptom that seems minor might have major implications.Likewise, if you are trying a new street drug for the first time, try a very small amount of it first. The people introducing you to it are going to have a much higher tolerance than you, so only take a fraction of what they do and go from there. Always take drugs in a friendly, comfortable environment and have a sober friend present. Know your limits.
