Are Hollywood A-list Actors Considered Bankable In Asia

Can Indian actors ever get massive success in Hollywood, like other White, Hollywood actors?

Thanks for A2AYes,it is possible for Indian Actor\Actress to enter Hollywood and also enjoy success there like how other actor\actress have come from other countries and have attained a stable and successive position in Hollywood among a big crowd of american actor\actress.But to be honest hollywood never has its doors opens for Asian Actors and nor do they encourage the same, only few have been able to reach there from India and mainly bollywood; to name it i can say Om Puri and Irrfan Khan the leading men from Bollywood who have been part of many hollywood movies.Om Puri has been long associated with Hollywood Movies and very much surprised to know that he has been in movies which has Michael Douglas, Jack Nicholson, Tim Robbins, Helen Mirren, Tom Hanks and many more hollywood actors\actressComing to Irrfan Khan, he is now the most wanted and approached actor from Bollywood for supporting roles in hollywood movies. Some of the popular movies include Slumdog Millionaire, Jurassic World, The Amazing Spider Man and Inferno. If one can look into the career graph and filmography Irrfan Khan, one would come to know he is not your usual actor who comes, acts and goes on. All his movies differ from each other and poles apart in variety of parameters when considered artistic cinema. On the Actress fraternity, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone are making waves from India in Hollywood. Priyanka starting from Quantico has reached the status being an invitee to the Oscars and Deepika is no less to her as she bagged a meaty role alongside Vin Diesel in XXX : Return of Xander Cage. There were few people who have also cameos and minor roles in hollywood movies such asRajnikanth in BloodstoneAnil Kapoor In Mission Impossible : Ghost ProtocolAmitabh Bachchan in The Great GatsbyAnupam Kher in Silver Linings PlaybookNaseeruddin Shah in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Is Tom Cruise the most famous actor Hollywood has ever had?

Maybe. These things are pretty hard to quantify. What I know is that today's actors and actresses are way more famous than the top stars of the pre-Internet age, even someone like Shirley Temple, who would probably be the most famous Hollywood actor of the 20th century.MI 2, Rain Man, and Top Gun were all the top grossing movies of their year. Cruise has had a very long career of big hits, movies with world-wide popularity, and in addition he has had a big presence in the tabloids which only increases his fame. And virtually all of his films are ones where he was the star, unlike for example Harrison Ford, who certainly has starred in big hits but was just one of many in the Star Wars movies.So... yeah, maybe. Thanks for the A2A!

What religion is the bollywood actress Rani Mukerji?

I think she's a Hindu. Not sure though.

Is Hollywood purposely discriminating against asians?

Unfortunately Hollywood is one of the slowest changing industries. It's the executive level that is a constant problem. Directors will tell you immediately that Asia has direct influence on their work. Starting with Akira Kurosawa who influenced people like George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and the likes... true story.

As of 2014, why is Halle Berry no longer considered by some to be an A-list actress? What happened to her career?

According to the Ulmer Scale, which is the basis for the definition of an A-List star[1], she is the top ranked female black actor and #5 of all black actors.  Her 'bankability rating' is roughly on par with Morgan Freeman, Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy and Samuel L. Jackson.image source: Ulmer ScaleWHAT IS THE ULMER SCALE?The Ulmer Scale is the film industry's premier series of powerbases for tracking, measuring and ranking the star power of more than 1,400 actors worldwide. Polling dozens of leading deal-makers from Hollywood and key international territories, the Scale uses a 100-point ranking system to measure bankability, the key component of star power. Bankability is the degree to which an actor's name alone can raise 100% or majority financing up-front for a film. Often it is the most critical factor in determining whether an actor is hired for a project. The Ulmer Scale tracks it exclusively for all three film budget levels: art house, mid-range and studio-level features. The Ulmer Scale also tracks other critical factors affecting the rise or fall of a star's career. These include his or her willingness to travel and promote, career management, professionalism, acting talent and acting range.Media outlets have frequently reported The Ulmer Scale's star rankings. They include The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, Variety, and Premiere and Radar magazines, as well as the television programs "Entertainment Tonight," The Reelz Channel, CNN's "Bizz Buzz," "The Fox Entertainment Report" and reports on the CBS, BBC and HBO networks.source: Ulmer Scale: WelcomeJames Ulmer (journalist) is an entertainment journalist who created a ranking list of actors, known as "The Ulmer Scale". Ulmer is also the author of the books "James Ulmer's Hollywood Hot List -- The Complete Guide to Star Ranking" and the "Directors Hot List", which measure the global value of stars and directors in a variety of areas. These include bankability, career management, professionalism, promotion, risk factors and talent.[1] A-listA-list is a term that alludes to major movie stars, or the most bankable in the Hollywood film industry. The A-list is part of a larger guide called The Hot List that has become an industry-standard guide in Hollywood. The Ulmer scale categorizes the lists into A+, A, B+, B, C, and D listings.

Why is Hollywood so reluctant to give Asian-Americans a chance in lead roles?

In the end, show business is a business. And they’ll tell you it’s the money.Asian-American actors are seen as less “bankable” than A-list stars such as ScarJo and Matt Damon. The Great Wall didn’t do very well in America but it made a killing in China just as expected. However, it’s a lie:Movies with more diverse casts also make more money at the box office, according to a studyIf Hollywood keeps casting the same old “A-list” stars to play whitewashed Asian characters and never give Asian Americans a chance to play their own characters: how are we ever going to rise up to stardom and become bankable? It’s a double standard.A previously unknown white actress, Daisy Ridley, can be casted as the lead of the Star Wars series, a multi-billion dollar one as well, without questions of how bankable she is.Here are some of her previous roles: Check Out These Clips of Daisy Ridley's Old TV and Movie RolesAnd I don’t doubt her talent…but can we agree that there are many talented Asian Americans as well?Lucy Liu, Dev Patel, Constance Wu, Jamie Chung, Kimiko Glenn…just to name a few right off the top of my head.I always say Hollywood is 20 years behind in depicting an accurate representation of America. Non-Asian artists are stubborn and want to replicate the movies/TV shows that they grew up with.Art can only imitate a version of life.Which is why we need more Asian-American writers, producers, directors, etc. if we ever want to change the business. There are plenty of Asian actors - don’t tell me there’s a shortage - but we need people who truly understand us. And that’s something a non-Asian won’t be to do.Diversity in Hollywood is inevitable. You can’t hide a group of people for so long and we’re coming out.-Long rant and it’s 2 a.m. but the message should be clear.

Why are most lists of top actors predominantly populated by white men?

You got to find who is financing the entertainment industry. Even the investors of color lack confidence in non-white actorcs and actresses. Sony pictures is a very good example why bamboo ceiling exists. Many talents of color have to write their own script amd trying to create jobs for themselves playing off broadway or wait tables until next opportunity arise. Entertainment industries is actually hiring less people now. The only way to get jobs today is to be born into business.

Does the financial success of Black Panther mean that Hollywood will now make movies with non-white actors which will target non-white themes?

The short answer is no.The longer answer is, remember the all-female Ghostbusters movie in 2016 that bombed at the box office? When it bombed, the reasons the media gave were:the budget was too bigthe alt-right all ganged up on social media and gave it such a stench that people avoided itBoth of these factors are also true to varying degrees for The Black Panther. Yet, it succeeded. Why?Because people mainly just want a good movie. When you go and drop around 20 bones per ticket these days, you’re doing it because you want to have a good time with your date or with your family, not because you support a social narrative. There are cheaper, less time consuming, and more rewarding ways to do that. The second reason that Black Panther is a success is because it has the huge machinery of Disney and Marvel Studios behind it. Black Panther had the biggest budget out of the last three MCU movies; Marvel threw the kitchen sink at its success: How much did it cost to make "Black Panther"? The figure is eye-opening.From Kevin Feige:"The resources devoted to this movie are equal to and in fact surpass our last couple of movies," Feige told Vulture in a recent interview. "It’s a big story that deserves to be told in a big way, for all of the cultural and political reasons that people talk about, but also because it’s such a key corner of our Marvel universe, and has been for decades and decades."You could put me in an MCU movie and it would make at least $100 million until people found out they got ripped off.For me to consider that there has actually been a sea change in Hollywood, I would have to see a non-white movie become a blockbuster without the massive built-in audience that is Disney/MCU.Also, when the 2016 Ghostbusters failed no one in the media was saying it was because people weren’t ready for women to be the lead in the movie. So when a movie like Black Panther succeeds, it’s not entirely, or even mostly, because mainstream audiences are demanding diversity. It’s because it’s a good movie and people had a good time watching it.
