How much generally would the cost be for an engine rebuild for a 1982 yamaha xj 650 engine?

You never know what's wrong with a motor, until it is broke down entirely. You may have a bad crank-cams could be shot etc.So giving a general cost is kinda hard to do.On the other hand if you can find another motor that is relatively cheap, that may be the way to go.However one never knows what kind of shape the motor is in you are at the mercy of the selling Gods.If it is an honest seller then you may be alright. You must really love that bike!!!!! Head gasket 100 bucks-exhaust gaskets, about 8 bucks apiece-Rod bearings about 20 bucks each-Crank bearings 20 bucks each-new pilot bearings for the crank-tranny bearings-new oil pump--you get the picture,a lot of money and unless you have the knowledge, you have to include labor. With the total cost involved you would have a good down payment, maybe even a different bike altogether.Good Luck

I need a balpark estimate for a in-chassis rebuild of a Ford 460 V8 7.5 engine?

I have a 78 Lincoln that had a rebuilt stroker 460 V8 7.5 engine put in 10yrs ago,car is easy to work on, no cpu no sensor or tricky electronics. I've driven it pretty hard, its a beast and had amazing hp after the first rebuild I hand picked its parts, Its now time to rebuild the engine, I'm having lack of power, worse than average mpg, blueish smoke and black heavy soot that shoots out the exhaust upon reving the engine. I would like to have the work done in the Irving, Lewisville, Carrollton and Grapevine areas surrounding Dallas. I don't make much money and will need to save up for this type of work as I don't have the space to do some of the work myself. On average what am I looking at in total cost for a in-chassis rebuild and replacement of cylinder liners, a re-bore honing the cylinder bores or not as needed, new piston rings, possibly new pistons if needed. New cam bearings, crankshaft bearings, new main bearings, new rod bearings. Service valves & valve stem seals as needed, new gaskets, oil seals. What ever is needed to restore compression and allow my engine to last me 10 more years. I no longer make the kind of money i used to make, so please help me ballpark how much should I save for something like this. Buying another car is out of the question, this is a car that has had lots put into it by me and it has treated me great for the last 10yrs with 0 repairs only oil changes and belts. Please help me gather recommended shops info or an estimated average in cost of work.

Why is the inline 6 engine in Jeep's the best?

The Jeep 4.0L is indeed a VERY good engine. It's ALL cast iron and also hails from the John F. Kennedy era, circa the early 1960s, when it was on the drawing board and put into production. The engine was a Chrysler engine to 2006, but it's an AMC engine all the way. What ChryCo. did was refine it for noise, harshness and vibration and upgrade the computer system to OBDII and reinforced the block itself with extra webbing and gussets (like it wasn't strong enough already...) after they got it from American Motors Corp.

The saving grace of the thing is it makes good torque for off-road use. This is done by it's long heavier crank as opposed to the new Wrangler JK's (JoKe?, JunK?) stubby lightweight V6 crank = more rotating metal. This "modern era" AMC straight six motor was responsible for being a base engine for almost all of AMC's cars and in every Jeep made after 1971 I think. Also this in-line six has 7 main bearings so it can distribute the load better and that also helps in keeping the longer crank from whipping around. This motor is by no means a drag motor like the "V" engines, but it has a lot of usable low-RPM torque to keep the vehicle from loosing traction, unlike a V6 or V8 which rev too high causing wheel spin = get stuck = call the hook.

Ease of upkeep and great spare parts availability with a good aftermarket make this an engine that will be around for a long, long time. Regular oil changes and routine maintenance guarantee a 250,000 mile engine easily. Chrysler, by getting rid of the 4.0L, shot themselves in the foot by the i.e. Not Invented Here syndrome that prevailed at Daimler. Plus, it's been rumored that the tooling for this great engine was starting to wear-out anyway. Maybe, it was the revenge they (Daimler) exacted upon America for the Germans (Daimler) getting their butt handed to them back in WW2
-at a great cost...

The only other in-line six American engines that equal the Jeep 4.0L in durability is the famed Dodge 225 Slant\6 or the Ford 300, but, the Jeep had the advantage of being fuel injected during it's entire life. The new Wrangler uses a glorified 3.8L V6 minivan motor and a new car salesman said they are disappointed in Chrysler for getting rid of the 4.0L in-line six as it is a better engine.
Remember this: Horsepower sells cars and torque moves them!
Now get an Aussie Locker for the front & rear if you don't have them plus go Jeepin'! Enjoy that 4.0L!

How much does it cost to replace a timing belt/chain on a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cyl?

The 4.0L inline six in the Grand Cherokee has been around for eons. It is an evolved design of an engine that dates back to the mid 60’s.It is an overhead valve engine and, as such, does not have a timing belt that has to be replaced on a regular basis; it has a chain. Is someone telling you the chain needs to be replaced? What makes you suspect the timing chain needs replacing? Now, that’s not to say the original timing chain …and drive sprockets …may not be worn out but usually the chain lasts at least as long as the engine. If you’re having to replace the timing chain because it is worn (as are the sprockets also) the engine, as a whole, more than likely needs to be rebuilt. How much does it cost? I have no idea. Your best bet would be to ask around at some local shops. But I’ll bet you did that already and they quoted you a price somewhere in the neighborhood of a grand or so. And that’s about what I’d anticipate …at least ..it would run to make that repair. The parts …the chain and sprockets …are not that expensive although you’ll pay twice or thrice the cost of the part you could find online …and that’s standard practice at *any* shop. Rather it’s the labor …the time required to perform the job that racks up the dollar signs.Hopefully you got some wrong gouge from a buddy about replacing the cam timing chain on your Cherokee. If so, you can slap them silly.

What is the average cost to replace your car engine?

I've replaced numerous engines in everything from an inexpensive Chevy Chevette to a Grand Prix V8 in a BMW X5 AWD and a V12 in a McLaren F1, and everything in between. Engine replacement costs can vary wildly depending on application, the donor engine and who does the work. For most Japanese cars, there are frequently used Japanese engines available with low mileage. These are imported from Japan and are recovered from their aggressive auto recycling program. If you have a late-model Japanese car, this is usually the most economic and reasonable way to go, and most can be done for around $2000 out the door. For European luxury cars, the prices usually exceed the cost of the vehicle, so scrapping the car is unfortunately the best option, from a financial point of view. For most American cars, it's best to locate a good, low-mileage engine at a wrecking yard and have an independent mechanic do the installation. If your local wrecker doesn't have your specific engine, they can search using a parts "hotline." There are also engine rebuilders out there in larger metropolitan areas who can rebuild your existing engine from start to finish. You just leave the car and pick it up a few days later. However check these vendors carefully with the BBB and Yelp! to make sure they have a good reputation. Also, the additional service level may cost you more than you'd expect. I also recommend taking pictures of your car before you leave it with them to make sure it's returned to you in undamaged condition.
