Are Lead Anchors Safe For Fish

Is WD40 really safe for fishing?

lots of nonsense, lets stick to the FACTS here. First we look at the question, then look at the answers, shall we?

The question made the statement that WD works great for attracting fish. We know that people have made a lot of money over the years selling fish attractants, and we really needn't go down that road, lets just say that the majority of those who make a living from fishing don't use attractants unless their getting paid to do so.

i.e. present your bait well, and you don't have to worry about how it smells other than masking human odors.

Maybe someone can post for you a link to where it is illegal to posses WD in your tackle box, or to use it on any bait you may have, and there you have it. If its against the law, then case closed. Here in California, I cant find it in the regs, maybe someone else can enlighten you.

My main reason for answering your question is because you asked if it was SAFE for the water/ environment.

first link is about Coal Point, which leaks several THOUSAND gallons of oil each day into the ocean, naturally. http://oils.gpa.unep.org/facts/natural-sources.htm and http://www.livescience.com/environment/050203_oil_seep.html
does this affect the environment? you betcha

here is by far the best reference on the subject, and is really quite interesting http://oils.gpa.unep.org/facts/natural-sources.htm
stick with the links on the left, this page is old and many in the main body no longer work.
I swim, surf fish recreate in general in these areas often so it is of particular interest to me.

this is a good source too http://oils.gpa.unep.org/documents/documents.htm

what exactly happens to oil when it comes in contact with water???? http://oils.gpa.unep.org/facts/fate.htm
what we find is that the composition of WD is that half of it is mineral oil, which we learned what happens to that from the previous link.

so what we have to look at is the AMOUNT of WD that is going into our lakes, streams and oceans. I think we can safely say that the amount is negligible due to evaporation and all of the other factors mentioned ad naseum.
Although it is well intentioned, and we should be mindful and vigilant in what goes into the places that we fish, WD is not something akin to, say, lead shot, where it is ingested by animals and creates all sorts of hazards in that respect.

What are some good plant anchors that are aquarium safe?

No lead. Those would leech into your water. Get some rocks and tie them to that. Lava rock is good it sinks and they attack easily to it. You can use cotton thread to tie them. This will slowly disentigrate in the water and the plants roots will attack to the rock. You can also do this with driftwood and other rocks (smooth doesn't work as well).

Is lead toxic enough to kill my fish?

My dad works at a plant where they make lead bricks and one day I came home and found my goldfish Sammy dead under one of these bricks. So my question is should I get a toxicologist to do an autopsy or is it probably that my fish died of lead poisoning?

Pleco fish- Weighing down zucchini, with what?

Do NOT use the metal strips they use in pet stores. Those are made of lead, and you don't want lead in your tank! Never, ever put lead, copper, brass, bronze, or galvanized steel in your aquarium.

A better option is a feeding clip - a suction cup and plastic clip that you put on the tank's side. Alternately, you can use a clip for a bag of chips, or a plastic clothespin, if it will sink, and the spring is plastic, aluminum, stainless steel, or plastic-coated steel.

I use plastic-coated steel paper clips. But, some fish may hurt themselves on the tips, so you have to mess with the ends and make them flush with the middle, which is annoying.

P.S. lol at "screwcumber" :)

Glass Bakeware: Do you prefer Pyrex or Anchor Hocking?

The Anchor brand ones. They seem to hold up a bit better. I got this Pyrex one that is a "take-along", you cannot get the lid off without the food in the dish flying out of the bowl. So aggravating! But anywho, that is the only Pyrex item I own that is really poopy, I have lots of stuff by both companies and they both work well and serve the purpose they're supposed to :-) But for great bakeware, get Corningware...LOVE their cookware. It comes clean so easily and bakes everything so nicely. And you can cook in it, and it looks nice so you can put it on the table and save the food right out of it. Hope this helps you out! :-)

I've bitten those lead split shot sinkers onto my line since i was a kid. Am I at risk now for lead poisoning?

Actually, you probably had high levels of lead in you blood as a child. Children are more suseptable to lead poisoning and are more likely to need treatment.
You don't say how old you are but the lead is eventually stored in your bones and other body tissues. If you get tested as an adult, the lead may not show up in your blood because the body has taken it out of the blood and stored it "in a safe place".
Sadly, it comes back to bite us in the butt though, because as we get older and our bones become less dense, the lead gets back in our blood.
Not really a good thing to keep doings since you know the harm. I did the same thing growing up, learning it from my dad. He has Alzhiemer's now--don't know if it had anything to do with the lead but you never know.
I'd invest in a good pair of stainless pliers.

Whats the best way to take care of Koi fish?

If you are a ponder, it is best to filter the water. there are many ways to filter the water including a home made method.

One method which I find useful is to layer a rubber maid container with several layers....

attach pump (uptake) to hose....
Hose into rubbermaid container...... (Layers will hold hose in place)
First layer, lava rock,
second layer, pea gravel,
third layer, lava rock
Fourth layer, pea gravel,
last layer, pillow fluff ((some pea gravel or decorative material to hold in down in place so that it doesn't float away with the water))

Each layer will break down the fish waste and the pillow fluff will polish it.......

from this the water will return back into the tank....... and should be clearn......

90% of the problems associated with fish diseases are water alone.....

Clear the water and you should have healthy fish.......

Other problems associated with fish are actually in the water and will be on the fish and again are usually due to water parameters and conditions.......

Check for PH, Nitrogen, chloramines and chlorine.....

the chloramine and chlorine will eat away at your fish..... make sure you are checking for this at all times.....

a sure way to make sure your fish are being taken care of on the water area are to make partial water changes every week or two.....

but, a good filter will keep you from having to do so as often.......

Some fish are likely to incurr diseases and they can be identified using a simple microscope.....

a gill scrape will be sufficient, if you can catch the quick little bastard......

But, that should assist in the care..... Hope that helps!!!

Are glass bowls safe to put in the oven?

There are different types of glasses. For most people a glass is simply a glass. But out of all types it has been found that Borosilicate glasses are the safest and healthiest material. Borosilicate glass consists of boron oxide which is the best material available for kitchen articles. Some types of glass are not suitable for oven use. You have to check the bottom of the bowl to check if there is an instruction written. Only if it is written ‘oven safe’ keep it in the oven or else no. I recently came through a site named Femora which sells borosilicate glassware. These bowls and casseroles are microwave proof, Oven proof and freezer proof. They come with a 1 year warranty against thermal shock. These kitchenware look extremely stylish and are perfect gifting items. They have a wide range of kitchenware like bowls, casseroles, storage containers, drinkware etc. Here are few pics of the glassware that I personally loved.
