Are Multiple Short Sessions Of Exercise Less Helpful Than One Long Session

How many times a week should you exercise to lose weight?

Those sessions you do sound high intensity. After excercise people's bodies need around 1-2 days rest between sessions for its systems to fully recover depending on a number of factors. If you were doing low intensity sessions, for example 1 hour light walking a day, you could probably do excercise every day. Without experiencing overtraining.

However since the body can adapt to slowly introduced stresses pretty well compared to big stresses introduced fast, and since it takes about 4-12 weeks for peoples bodies to adapt to a new excercise stress, you could add a Cardio session to the days inbetween your intense days. Only if you raise the intensity of these Cardio sessions very slowly. This can be done by having short sessions and building up to long sessions. I recommend the plan below:

<>

PROGRAM
Monday: Cardio
Tuesday: 2 hour dance class
Wednesday: Cardio
Thursday: Cardio
Friday: Swimming 1 hour 30+ PE in school for 1 hour 40 mins
Saturday: Cardio

PLAN
Week 1 adaption - All Cardio sessions increase intensity to 15 minutes
Week 4 adaption - All Cardio sessions increase intensity to 30 minutes
Week 8 adaption - All Cardio sessions increase intensity to 45 minutes
Week 16 adaption - All Cardio sessions increase intensity to 60 minutes
Week 20 adaption - All Cardio sessions increase intensity to .... minutes (follow pattern)

CARDIO SESSIONS
Cardio sessions are perfect for losing weight (fat).

type? cardio
when? days inbetween your high intensity sessions
how long? gradually build up. 1 hour satisfactory
what? nonstop movement. For example easy; walking, cycling, swimming

Everyone reacts differently to excercise so test yourself, listen to how your body reacts and how you feel in general. And decide if you need to reduce or increase the intensity of the cardio sessions via time lengths, if you need more time to rest and recover.

Goodluck ^^ )

Is doing thirty 1-minute sessions of exercise per day as beneficial as doing one 30-minute session per day?

To be honest, no. You won’t have time to actually warm up in one minute, let alone actually exercise. If you don’t have time, make it. If I really want to go for a run, but I’m busy all day, I either wake up an hour earlier the next day or stay up for another hour that night to run. If you really want it, you make time. It’s literally 30 minutes, you can afford that much less sleep, or out of your lunch break, or wherever. Just put on some trainers, a pair of shorts and a fresh t-shirt and run for 30 minutes, quickly wash down and change back, then continue on your way. It is much easier than people think. If you have room for 30 1 minute breaks, you have room for 1 30 minute break.

Are two 15 minutes cardio sessions better than one 30 minutes session?

It depends upon your objectives.  For example, if you're training for distance running, longer sessions are better.  If you're trying to burn calories, multiple shorter sessions will yield better results.  If you're training for general fitness, you want to make the shorter sessions more intense - that way you will get more exercise done in the same amount of time when compared to a single longer session.  If you have physical limitations such as arthritis, then a gentler approach will be more beneficial over time.  So, to summarize, either could be "better" depending on what you want to achieve.  And both are MUCH better than sitting still.

Does walking your dog count as good exercise?

You know, the effect of exercise (walking, running, jogging) is cumulative. You can do it all at one go for 60 minutes per session or like what you're doing now, spread it out over several sessions a day. At the end of the day, the spread outs still get you achieve an exercise threshold of either a 30, 45 or 60 minute session.

The number of calories burned while walking really depends on how fast you walk. The faster you walk, the more miles you cover in a shorter duration and the higher the intensity it becomes which in turn helps burn off more calories.

The best is to do race walking (i.e. walk as if you're in a race). That way, you get to max out the calories burned.

I've written a guide on the calories burned walking at different speeds here which you might want to have a look at: http://www.perfect-body-toning.com/calor...

When exercising, is it more effective to have many small exercise sessions throughout the day or one giant exercise session during the day?

As far as health benefits go there is no winner here, one is not more beneficial then the other. What is recommend is 3–5 hours of moderate activity per week. So it just depends on your schedule. Some people find it easier to block out 3/10 minute work outs thru out the day were others rather knock out 60 minutes all at once.If your goal is to lose weight and keep it off you will want to aim for completing about 5 hours of exercise weekly. Keep in mind that the intensity of your workout needs to be challenging to actually see weight lose and muscle gain. During longer work outs you can go from high intensity to slower which is considered interval training. If you are doing 10 minute work outs you want to do High Intensity Training to see the most benefits. This is moving or lifting near your max or peak performance.Just keep in mind You need to burn 3,500 calories weekly to lose 1 lb. a week. This can also be done by cutting 500 calories from your diet daily.Hope this HelpsJoin the Community dedicated to Getting Healthy and Staying Healthy here at The Healthy Lifestyle Regiment.

Is it better to exercise for 30 minutes 6 days a week or 1 hour 3 days a week?

I always tell my clients that working out for 1 hour at a time for multiple days in a week is the more efficient route to go when trying to lose weight and/or build muscle. The reason I say this is because usually the first 30 minutes or so is purely burning the stored energy from foods you ate previously before the workout. When you workout for long times such as an hour it boosts the amount of energy you are using and your body will start burning fat at the end of the workout. Completely off topic, but did you know your body burns fat after your workout too? Yeah! after your 1 hour workout your body will actually burn fat for about 2–3 more hours past your workout, thus another great reason to really get your blood flowing in that 1 hour workout! Here is a basic but good workout you can do in an hour:20 minutes of cardio (running, biking, basketball, etc)5 sets of 20 pushups (if you can’t do a pushup, use your knees)5 sets of 25 squats10 sets of 10 lunges on each leg8 sets of 20 situps20 minutes of cardioThis workout is basic but it will hit most muscles in your body. The reason you do cardio at the end and the beginning is because the beginning is used to get your blood pumping and flowing for your workout. The end should be more intense than the beginning.Good luck to your exercising journey! If you want to learn more about exercising or weightloss check out my blog!
