I'd choose either skim milk or fruit juice for the base, but not both. I always add a scoop or two of whey protein to mine, along with the banana and berries. If you can afford the calories, add one scoop of a high butterfat French Vanilla ice cream... Heaven!

No, blending fruits and vegetables is not better than eating the whole food. The process of blending pre-digests the fruits and veggies , which means your body doesn’t have to work as hard to break them down.What does this mean to you? Most likely a spike in blood sugar because the fiber found in the whole food has been broken down into liquid. Fiber is very important in slowing down the digestion of food and regulating blood sugar. But only when your body has to work at breaking it down.So most likely you’ll have a blood sugar spike which is not only unhealthy, but you could get hyper and jittery. And then comes the crash shortly after. This is when you suddenly feel tired and probably hungry. Hungry leads to snacking - this is your body’s attempt at keeping you away.If you have to snack more, you’re probably defeating the purpose of drinking the smoothie in the first place.Also, pre-digested blender food is not as good as whole food because your body doesn’t have a chance to extract the maximum amount of nutrients from the fruits and vegetables. Since the food passes through you faster, there’s less time for your body to absorb the nutrients.Don’t get me wrong - I love smoothies. Drinking them helped me lose weight and keep it off. I always recommend adding a high-quality protein powder and fiber supplement to smoothies. If you do that, you have a better shot at slowing down the digestion of your smoothie and getting the more nutritional benefit out of it.
