Are Some Stereotypes Good

"The Good Earth" by Pearl Buck: Stereotypes?

It's been some time since I read the book, but it is a classic. Pearl S. Buck was the daughter of missionaries, and spent much of her childhood in China. She was forced to flee with her family to Shanghai during the Boxer Rebellion, and lived as a refugee there for almost a year. She returned to live in China several times after that, and was finally forced to leave the country due to the political tensions of the day.

I mention these points because they are reflected in The Good Earth, just through Chinese eyes. Pearl S. Buck was quite familiar with China in the waning days of the last dynasty, and in the turmoil which followed the fall of the last dynasty. Social change is one of the main themes in The Good Earth, and her characters can be found as real people in the history of that time (the Chinese peasant closely following Confucian ways, the rich man indifferent to the suffering of others, the newly rich man unable to handle his elevated status, and finally the next generation failing to understand the older generation). I do not think these characters were stereotypes, and if they were, the issues and messages in the book overshadow them.

French Stereotype?

well i live in Pennsylvania and we had some French exchangers come back in the fall.
1. Americans think that the French are snobbish so we expect snobbish treatment.
-therefore, if you are friendly, you will receive friendliness [unless you meet someone completely rude and obnoxious and close-minded to other cultures]
2. do not be surprised to hear yourselves called "Freedom people". it was sort of a joke to call the French that when they came. but the ones that came to my school did not make any effort to talk to anyone except who they stayed with.
3. PLEASE don't get into a political debate; we know Bush is an idiot, some people just like defending it.
4. the typical french stereo type: hairy, smelly, cheesey [literally, like you smell of cheese - im not saying you do but its part of the stereotype], rude, arrogant, mean, aloof.
5. have fun in America and enjoy yourself. but make the effort to be diplomatic - it may pay off eventually.

oh also, not all Americans are fat, lazy, or obese. and not all of us eat fast food [i hate it]. you folk may have your stereo types about Americans and not all of them are correct.

What are some stereotypes about Thai men?

I have the opportunity to know Thai people from all sort of social level. The sterotype of Thai man being lazy, drunkard and lack of responsibility usually refer to man in the province and often these man do not have that much education as well. I visit my ex hometown so often and it is so common to hear how many man lack responsibility. And if you read up on Thai news, you will find many news about Thai man killing their wife or love out of jealous which may lead you to think the lack of self-control. And I can tell you that so many Thai lady who venture out always say ‘I dont want a Thai man’ , this is the result of seeing the many unfortunate event in their hometown. And also the bad part is, some of them could father so many kids but not capable of providing the best for them which show lack of family planning.Seem its all negative right but I get to meet the other group of Thai as well. These group are mostly executive with better education. Some of them are my friends who I meet up often as well. They do their planning better, 1 or 2 kids. And they will start to plan for their kids as well. Like any other family you can see in my own country Singapore. They are not lazy, they work for their family. Some have really lovely house and pamper their kid too. They think for their kids education as well.Next we got the another group, usually belong to the richer one. They may have 2 family or more. But this group morally having 2 wife is not right and both wife have kids with him. But this group would ensure both of his family will not suffer and ensure they have a good path in life as well.So its not fair to stereotype until you really meet people from all types of social status and then you will realize, its hard to really stereotype people.

What are some stereotypes about German women?

I actually had a German girlfriend and a Swiss-German girlfriend. Here are some stereotype and the truth.Stereotype: They're cold when it comes to expressions of love and romance.True: Girls from this part of the world are not good at expressing warmth. They're usually "cold" as in contrast with Latinas. Even if they like/love you they're not very expressive about it. Edit: We could fit Norwegians, Swedish and Finns here as well... unless I keep on ending up with the cold ones.Stereotype: They don't know how to dance.Partly True: Most of them cannot dance or are awkward when they dance, especially when it comes to ballroom/couple/Latin dances. Or if they can dance, it will be very rigid and controlled, a bit technical. They don't usually let themselves loose. They don't give themselves to the dance. If you improvise they're a bit lost.Stereotype: If they can't dance, they're bad in bed.False: This is simply not true! Period!Stereotype: They're bad cooks.False: I can tell you that they cook well! But if you're a guy that like extremes e.g. extremely salty or extreme flavors, you wouldn't appreciate their dishes. They usually have a good sense of flavors when it comes to cooking. It's just different from what you're used to. The flavors are lighter, subtler and tamed. You'll need a finer tongue to appreciate the nuances of flavors in the dish.

What are some good non-stereotype last names for a fictional German character?

Liste der häufigsten Familiennamen in Deutschland – WikipediaIt’s in German, and it lists the hundred most common German surnames. Are some of them stereotypical? Yes, but maybe you’ll find one that you like. Also, take note that some German surnames have the dame origin and a similar or even same pronounciation but they are written differently. So instead of “Maier” you also can have a “Meyer”, “Mayer” or “Meier”. On a related, more humourous note, everyone knows a Meier (and its variants) or two.If you don’t like any of those listed names, I would suggest Meaning of Surnames here. You can search for German names, and even look for specific meanings if you so wish.As for a direct suggestion and to answer your question in a more direct way, I always liked names related to royalty, like “König” or “Fürst”, Kraus (because I can just imagine someone with his hair standing off in all directions), Stern and, and yes it is a German one, Tolkien! As written in this answer here: Stephen Tempest's answer to What is the meaning and origin of the family name Tolkien?

What are some stereotypes in the movie Good Will Hunting?

Hmmm interesting question. One might be the pony tail guy was trying to sound smart by regurgitating other people's work and the other might be Robin Williams being hairier than a wookie.
