Are Squirrels Out To Get Me

I got bitten by a squirrel. What should I do?

See a doctor ASAP.   Rabies in squirrels may be rare and squirrel to human transmission  may be rare.  Neither are impossible.  Squirrels rarely bite humans to begin with.  At very least you need a tetanus shot.  But being tested for rabies is an excellent precaution because otherwise you wont know you have it intil symptoms appear weeks later and by the time symptoms appear its too late.  Rabies is incurable once set in, and its deadly.  Also, squirrels rarely get close enough to people to bite so either you were messing with it or it attacked unprovoked.  Don't annoy or try to pet or pick up unknown or/and wild animals.   If it attacked totally unprovoked then rabies is a good possibility.   Theres a first time for everything.   You need to be treated and the local Animal Control people need to know theres are possible rabid animals in the area.   Dont gamble with your life.  See a doctor.

Do squirrels attack people? Why?

“Attack?” Probably not, unless they were sick or injured. Squirrels are generally not very aggressive. That said, they are extremely smart and adaptable, and they become used to humans easily. We’re basically moving in slow motion to them, so they really don’t see us as a threat most of the time. As a result, they can be very bold about coming right up to people, eating out of their hands, even climbing or jumping on people! (If you’re interested, all it takes is a little patience and some nuts to tame the squirrels in your yard enough to hop right up on your knee.)Fun fact: squirrels were introduced to American cities in the 1800s as a way of bringing nature closer to urban life, which was felt to be salubrious for the soul. From colonial times until the late 1800s squirrels were also one of the most popular pets in the country. That’s why it is not uncommon to see portraits of upper class colonial people (especially children) with pet squirrels. The painting below is by John Singleton Copley and hangs in the Boston Museum of Fine Art. It shows a colonial boy with a pet flying squirrel on a silver chain.

After this time, a few times a day spend several minutes with your pet. In the beginning, sit quietly outside his cage and offer him a treat. With time and patience, even a shy squirrel will respond to a treat within a day or two. At first, feed the treats through the cage, then as your new squirrel becomes more socialized, you can begin reaching inside the cage to hand-feed him.

Squirrel scratch , should I see a doctor?

Eh, honestly I'd just put some neosporin on it and be done with it. From a scratch, your biggest risk is infection, and with its dirty nails, you would want to be careful of that. I would only go to the Dr. if it bit you. If it bit, there are a lot more risks, like rabies. But you wont get that from a nail scratch.

Have you ever lost a fight to a squirrel?

Not a squirrel, but his relative: a Prairie Dog.During a relocation project I grabbed a big male prairie dog with soaking wet gloves to put him in a cage. Even though I thought I had a hold of him pretty good with my left hand, he started slipping through the wet glove. I went to stop him with my (un-gloved) right hand and he spun his head around and latched on to my right index finger. Not only did he bite down on the first joint (right behind the nail), but started chewing at about ninety miles per hour. Doesn’t sound too bad does it? Think again; look at what he was chewing on me with:Now I’d been nipped by prairie dogs before, but never attacked and chewed on like this. It took about 30 seconds an all my strength to get him off me; but not before he put a real hurtin’ on me. Of course I “cowboy-ed up”, washed it off and put a bandage on it. BAD IDEA! Five days later with my finger the size of a cucumber, I’m at UNM Hospital getting hand surgery and on an antibiotic IV drip for 3 days. Meanwhile the PD is getting a new home out of town, safe from the bulldozers.I’d say that little SOB won that fight, don’t you?

How can I get a wild squirrel to come and let me pet it instead of it running away? How can I make it less afraid of me?

I used to work on a campus that had lots of squirrels that students and other people fed. The squirrels had become unafraid of humans and who come over to you when you were eating lunch. Swatting them didn't work. They are incredibly tough, muscular little creatures. The worst thing that ever happened to me while protecting my lunch was that one put its front paws on one of my fingers. Their claws are as sharp as razor blades, and without any intent to do harm, the squirrel punctured my finger with each of its claws on one foot. There is a shrine in Japan where they have tame deer. They are thoroughly obnoxious because a whole herd of them will come up to you and start poking and trying to nibble. To get them to move away you would really have to hurt them, and probably would have incided hostile reactions from humans.
