Is the 75% casualty rate of German submariners in WWII the highest of any military arm ever?

The high rate of U-boat loses came only after the Enigma Codes were broken. Prior to that, the “military branch” that took the worst losses in World War II was never considered a military branch. Even today, the Merchant Marine is considered only an auxiliary to the Navy. The Merchant Marine was tasked with moving all the needed materiel from America to Britain, Russia, and the Pacific. While U.S. newspapers often announced that two Merchant Marine ships were lost the previous week, the actual losses averaged more than 33 ships per week. Merchant Mariners suffered some of the most gruesome deaths of the war. Following U-boat attacks, they were scalded to death in boiler explosions or drowned in icy waters. Documented are incidents of German U-boat crews machine gunning survivors clinging helplessly to lifeboats or wreckage; Japanese U-boat crews beheading captured Merchant Mariners; facing starvation and torture in POW camps… Until the build rate for replacement merchant ships became less than 4 Days 15 Hours 29 Minutes, we were losing the Atlantic War. Once shipyards hit their stride, we could build new ships faster than Germany could sink them and the supplies began to get through. One out of every 26 merchant mariners from all nations died in the Second World War, an overall loss rate of 3.85 percent. The next closest service was the US Marine Corps which lost 3.66 percent of its force to battle and noncombat deaths in the Pacific. It seems unlikely, but sadly true, the Corps would ultimately suffer fewer losses than the guys who were just delivering the mail.

What does Mark Twain mean?

Clemens maintained that his primary pen name, "Mark Twain," came from his years working on Mississippi riverboats, where two fathoms (12 ft, approximately 3.7 m) or "safe water" was measured on the sounding line. The riverboatman's cry was "mark twain" or, more fully, "by the mark twain" ("twain" is an archaic term for two). "By the mark twain" meant "according to the mark [on the line], [the depth is] two fathoms". Clemens provides a footnote to Chapter 8 ("Perplexing Lessons") of Life on the Mississippi where he explains "mark twain" as "two fathoms" and "Mark three is three fathoms". The name may also have come from his wilder days in the West, where he would buy two drinks and tell the bartender to "mark twain" on his tab.

Clemens claims that his famous pen name, was not entirely his invention. In Chapter 50 of Life on the Mississippi he wrote:

Captain Isaiah Sellers was not of literary turn or capacity, but he used to jot down brief paragraphs of plain practical information about the river, and sign them "MARK TWAIN," and give them to the "New Orleans Picayune." They related to the stage and condition of the river, and were accurate and valuable; ... At the time that the telegraph brought the news of his death, I was on the Pacific coast. I was a fresh new journalist, and needed a nom de guerre; so I confiscated the ancient mariner's discarded one, and have done my best to make it remain what it was in his hands—a sign and symbol and warrant that whatever is found in its company may be gambled on as being the petrified truth; how I have succeeded, it would not be modest in me to say.

Regardless of the source of the name, "Mark Twain," the alter ego of Samuel Clemens, was "born" in the office of the Nevada Territorial Enterprise, when the name first appeared on an article published on February 3, 1863.

What was poseidon famous for besides being the God of the sea?

Poseidon was the God of the Seas, the horses and the earthquakes.

Poseidon Greek god of the sea. Son of Kronos and Rhea. He and his siblings were swallowed by Kronos, but they were later rescued by their brother Zeus. The brothers Zeus, Poseidon and Hades later divided the world among themselves, with Poseidon receiving dominion over the sea. His chief consort was Amphitrite. Father of Antaios, Orion and Polyphemos. Poseidon was secondarily a god of mariners (to whom he may send storms or a fair voyage), of waters in general, and of earthquakes. In the latter capacity he was known as Enosigaios or Enosichthon, meaning "earth-shaker". Athena defeated Poseidon in their famous contest for the allegiance of Athens. While Poseidon offered humanity the boon of the horse, Athena offered the olive. Elsewhere, he helped Apollo build the walls of Troy. However, he became an implacable enemy of Troy after Laomedon refused to pay him, and he sided with the Greeks in the Trojan War. Poseidon was closely associated with horses as Hippios ("of horses"), and the horse was sacred to him. He fathered many famous horses, including the winged Pegasus by the Gorgon Medusa, and another winged horse, Areon, by Erinys. In Corinth, horse-races were held in his honour. On Argos horses were sacrificed to him by drowning in a whirlpool. Poseidon was generally depicted as an older, bearded man carrying a trident (the three-pronged fisherman's spear). There were temples at Cape Sunium, the southern-most tip of Greece, at Pylos in Crete, and Mount Mykale in Greek Anatolia. Freshwater springs were often consecrated to Poseidon as well. As an oracular deity, he had an oracle at Cape Tainairon and, according to one tradition, he was the first keeper of the oracle at Delphi. Regattas were held in his honour off Cape Sunium. Poseidon's chief festival was the Isthmia, scene of the Isthmian Games, celebrated near the Isthmus of Corinth.

Why did the Houston Astros become an American League team starting in 2013?

It was a MLB requirement for the new owner of the Astros to accept.
MLB wanted to:
1. "Even" the leagues from 16 in NL and 14 in AL to 15 each.
2. Create a rivalry with the intra-state Texas Rangers in the AL West.

The move of the Astros to the AL West results in:
1. An ODD number of teams in the AL and the NL
2. Because of #1, forces interleague games every day of the season and further dilutes the original purpose of the AL vs. NL World Series.
3. Astros in the NL Central were in the same time zone (Central) as four of its rivals (Cincinnati in EDT was the exception)
4. Astros in the AL West are now in the same time zone as one (1) of its rivals (Rangers) with the other three West rivals who are two (2) hours different in the Pacific time zone.
5. Astros fans wanting to watch away TV games vs. Angels, A's and Mariners will have to wait til 9:00 pm (Central) for the first pitch.

Other than that - "Change is good". lol

Why did Britain keep fighting in World war 2?

I mean, when France fell, Britain was good as dead. I mean, if it hadn't been for the US and the Russians changing sides maybe, the British would have been overwhelmed by the Germans in the end.
So, why didn't Britain just go for peace? What use was it to fight? Why didn't they just give up to Germany?

I need a thesis statement for my english essay on the Odyssey. HELP!!!?

Homer's Odyssey is an ancient Greek epic poem. The main character, Odysseus goes to fight in a war and then must return home with Poseidon acting to keep him from reaching Ithaca. Santiago, from Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist,is a boy who followed his heart to find treasure, and more importantly, true love and and an understanding of life. These characters – and others like them - always possess three characteristics that work together and make up the heroic foundation on top of which the rest of the character's personality is built on and there fore affected by.

Can you buy a stock share of a MLB baseball team?

In a word, "no". The pubic is not considered part of the "Good ole' boy" system. The "haves" will never allow the "have nots" to have anything.
