Are There Any Warehouses In The Limehouse District Of London If So Where

Housing: How is it to live in the area around Shadwell Station, London, UK?

I’ve lived 10 years in Tower Hamlets, mostly around the Whitechapel, Shadwell and now Bow area. There are a number of relatively new buildings along Cable Street heading towards Limehouse which are pretty decent.Shadwell used to have a particularly bad reputation especially around the DLR Station as it used to offer a lot of hidden areas for local criminals to do their dealing as described in this blog post that links to a TFL press release.Shadwell: 75% Less ScaryA lot of Londoners will refer to Shadwell remembering those days failing to understand that it has changed quite a bit. It’s an incredibly well-connected part of London, a fact which has not been missed by many young people who want to be able to get into Central London quickly (after taking the DLR to Bank in about 4 mins, you are pretty much anywhere in Central London within 10–15 minutes.)After living in Whitechapel for many years, embarassingly I never knew Shadwell Park (as many older people refer to King Edward Memorial Park) and had barely ventured into Wapping. If you live near the station, you have these beautiful parts of London on your doorstep. Watney Market (the main pedestrian area leading to the station) remains an eyesore but I’m someone who didn’t mind having a cheap meal at Wimpeys which shows my standard of expectation when it comes to bars and cafes. I definitely don’t need some hipster bar selling craft beer on my doorstep. That doesn’t mean that you can’t get to such places very quickly though! If you want to live in a place that allows you to meet up with friends around Shoreditch or Central London very quickly. This doesn’t mean that you have to treat the area as a dormitory and be ashamed though: The Prospect of Whitby and Captain Kidd in Wapping are just over 10 minutes walk away and are great pubs and there are some decent restaurants in Whitechapel: Lahore or Tayyabs (sadly Mirch Masala closed a few years back). If you are looking for a quaint middle-class part of London or care about whether the hipster crowd hang around in your area, this is definitely not the place for you but while in my 20s and possibly even 30s, I don’t think I could have chosen a better part of London to live at the time: cheap, relatively safe (kids on the estate would say hi and were generally polite. I personally saw less criminal activity than in Whitechapel or Bow), interesting pubs and incredibly well-connected. Those were my main criteria back then.

Is living in the area between Canary Wharf and the city of London considered posh?

I live in the area immediately north of Canary Wharf known as Poplar. I know the entire Borough of Tower Hamlets very well. Essentially the areas west of Canary Wharf, Whitechapel, Stepney, Bethnal Green and Shadwell are part of the old East End and are fairly poor. They are characterised by lots of social housing, Asian immigrants (mainly Bangladeshi) and the remains of the old “Cockney Culture”.However, there has been social change in the Borough. This has been concentrated in the Docklands, the areas nearest the River Thames. Therefore Limehouse south of the East India Dock Road/Commercial Road and Wapping, south of “The Highway” have much higher levels of private houses and apartments. These areas are off the beaten track and tend to attract City and Wharf workers, wealthier European and East Asian migrants to their canyon like streets. There are also smarter cafes, restaurants and bars. The Custom House at the Pier Head, Wapping WallThe Limehouse Basin, Narrow StreetHowever unlike the areas to the west of the City of London and West End these places cannot be described as posh (ie Upper Class or exclusive).

Where can I buy bedding in london?

My step-son recently started at York University - though some distance from London. There you had the option of paying around £40 and the college would supply bedding and towels.........but his mom wanted to choose them herself....Dunelm Mill www.dunelm.com is a good place for housewares and I think they do bedding packs for students. And the larger supermarkets - Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda (owned by WalMart) - also sell cheap duvets, sheets, towels, etc.Which college/hall? If central London you'll be spoiled for choice.

Should the majority of UK government departments be moved out of London?

No, I don't think so, it would be a waste to move out of all the buildings that house the Great Offices of State, parliament is designed to be a legislature with all the equipment to aide MPs and Lords in their representative business. Also having Government departments in close proximity means that MPs can reach Ministers quickly and easy, I once had to run an errand for an MP where I had to go to the Department of Work and Pensions, walking to the DWP from parliament saved the Tax-Payer from an expenses paid bus/rail fare. It all being together has many benefits. With further devolution to Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, power will be shared a little more.

I’m going to London for a month in April. What all can I see in the Canary Wharf area?

In the immediate area is the excellent Museum of London and just across the river lies Greenwich which can easily take a whole day or more to explore with it’s Observatory, Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark and more more besides. It’s a World Heritage Site so whilst the previous poster isn’t totally incorrect he is missing some wonderful things just minutes away. You can also be in central London in less than 30 minutes via boat or Docklands Light Railway (DLR).Museum of LondonA World Heritage Site - Visit Greenwich
