Is there a list describing the different months?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January
January is the door to the year.

February "month of the pearl"; when snow melts on tree branches, it forms droplets, and as these freeze again, they are like pearls of ice.

March meaning earthy month, meaning earth finally became visible under the snow.

April "to open," in allusion to its being the season when trees and flowers begin to "open," which is supported by comparison with the modern Greek use (opening) for spring.

May has been named for the Greek goddess Maia, who was identified with the Roman era goddess of fertility.the maiores, Latin for "elders," no other month begins on the same day of the week as May. This month and June are the only two months that have this trait.

June meaning "younger ones," also called the season of the unicorn.

July was renamed for Julius Caesar, who was born in that month. Previously, it was called Quintilis in Latin, since it was the fifth month in the ancient Roman calendar. Dog days begin.

August: This month was originally named Sextilis in Latin, because it was the sixth month in the original ten-month Roman calendar under Romulus in 753 BCE, In 8 BCE it was renamed in honor of Augustus birthstone is the peridot or onyx. Its birth flower is the gladiolus or poppy. meaning beauty, strength of character, love, marriage and family.

September: In Latin, septem means "seven" and septimus means "seventh"; September was in fact the seventh month of the Roman calendar until 153 BCE.

October retained its name (from the Latin "octo" meaning "eight")

November retained its name (from the Latin novem meaning "nine")

December In Latin, decem means "ten". December was also the tenth month in the Roman calendar.

Why is Diwali date differ in South and North India?

It is actually not different because of the same festival being celebrated on two days. But it is celebrated on different days for two different reasons. In North India (not sure if this applies to every state) Deepavali is on Amavaasya and hence is celebrated on that night when Amavasya falls. The reason is the return of Sita Ram and Lakshman to Ayodhya. In some states it is about Lakshmi Puja.In South India it is predominantly celebrated on the day before, i.e the Chaturdasi commemorating the killing of Naraka by Satyabhama and Krishna. Obviously the day of Chaturdasi is a day before Amavaysa. And hence the celebration a day before.I assume in Tamil Nadu especially, Naraka Chaturdasi itself is considered as Deepavali. That said, I am not sure about other Southern states, but in AP and TS Deepavali is celebrated on Amavasya and Naraka Chaturdasi is celebrated as a distinct festival on the previous day. While decorating and cleaning the house, cooking delicacies, having a ritual bath and in few places burning an effigy of Mr. Narak are done on the day of Chaturdasi, the festival of Lakshmi Puja follows on Depavali with the night ending with exchange of Sweets, lighting deepas, and burning fire-crackers.The whole episode of Narakasura vadha by Krishna and Satyabhama, took place in Pragjyotisha, Kamarupa kingdom, currently associated with the present day Assam. But people in Assam don't celebrate Diwali for this reason, and somehow people in South celebrate it for this reason.

Halloween in the Julian and Gregorian calendars?

According to everything I have read, All Saints Day was moved from May 13th to November 1st in the 8th century. When the Gregorian calendar was adopted in 1582, and ten days were dropped from the calendar, this means All Saints should have moved to October 22. Instead it remained on November 1. I would have assumed that this meant the church simply wanted to keep it on the same date; however, in some parts of Europe, Martinmas (November 11) is referred to as "Old Halloween" and has many Halloween customs associated with it. It makes sense that Halloween would have originally been celebrated on Nov. 11 because the change from the Julian to Gregorian calendars would have resulted in its move to Nov. 1. Yet I cannot find any church references to All Saints originally being on the 11th. Any thoughts? Am I overlooking something obvious here?
