Arguments For And Against Making School Councils Compulsory In All Schools

Do you have to speak during high school graduation?

i have never heard anything like that.....plus that would take FOREVER!!! time is money and im pretty sure that ALL you are hearing is simply rumors and is not fact... usually they ask the vala dictorian (spelling) to make a speech and they also sometimes ask the class president to speak but not EVERY single student.....no no. i think you are just hearing lies....

What effect would making politics a compulsory subject in secondary schools have on young voter apathy?

It may invigorate an entire generation into registering to vote in the UK and taking part as they would understand the history of all the different parties and what they stand for. Also it could highlight to women the importance of voting as many women fought and died for their right to vote in the suffrage movement. On the other hand, my experience of Politics at secondary school (usually in History) was of a left-wing bias from teachers - And we just took it all in.Voter Apathy in the UK I believe is largely down to poor education of Politics-  What would be needed is an NGO to tour the schools of the UK with representatives from all the major parties to talk about the importance of voting. This I think would make the system democratic and fair.

How can I, as a student, make my school a better place?

Often what a school needs to become a better place is for everyone--students and adults--to treat each other better.Treat everyone with respect--fellow students, faculty, administrators. Help keep your school clean--if you walk along and see a gum wrapper on the floor, pick it up and throw it out. Acknowledge people.  If you see someone you know, smile and say hello.  If you pass a teacher you don't know, at least smile.  Include more people in your group of friends. See if another student looks as if s/he is left out--at least introduce yourself and talk to him/her.  You don't have to be friends, but be nice.Recognize that no one is beneath anyone else.  Smile and say hello to the cleaning people as well as the people who work in the cafeteria. If a student says something hurtful or mean about another student, tell them that is not a good thing to say.  It's difficult, but you can tell them that that kind of language makes you uncomfortable.Thank your teacher as you leave class. They have put a lot of effort into preparing the lesson.Improving a school often means improving the atmosphere between students and students and students and adults.  It is not hard for an individual to do, but it requires vigilance.  If more students act this way, the school gradually, and then more quickly, gets better.

Why don't schools teach how to write in cursive anymore?

My kids are taught cursive in public school now, but they do not make it mandatory for them to keep writing with it. Most private/parochial schools do enforce the cursive writing and make it mandatory for all assignments.

The only reason I can think as to why they don't enforce it is laziness. And because they are so bombarded with testing and having the kids do well in major subject areas they don't think putting an emphasis on this is necessary or important in the big scheme of things. Now a days most kids have computers and type everything. So many kids can't even spell properly because of spell check and text messaging.
