Arthritis Leg And Back

Dog with broken leg might get arthritis...?

Feed your dog a premium food and keep him on the thinner side. A glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM supplement helps. It is also thought that a diet low in grains and carbs helps stop the inflammation from srthritis. My personal favorite is Innova Evo, but I can't afford to feed it. : ( Blue Buffalo is not bad, either, but not sure ont he price. Basically, you want to check the ingredients on your bad of food. Chichen meal (or any meat "meal) is JUST chicken - but with the water removed. So, chicken meal (or any meat meal) is a good first ingredient, but any whole meat as a first ingredient is better. Stay away from any food that has corn in the first 3-4 ingredients, as they are listed by weight and it means that your dog is eating mostly filler! Following are the ingredients for Beneful....

Ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), rice flour, beef, soy flour, sugar, sorbitol, tricalcium phosphate, water, salt, phosphoric acid, animal digest, potassium chloride, dicalcium phosphate, sorbic acid (a preservative), L-Lysine monohydrochloride, dried peas, dried carrots, calcium carbonate, calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, added color (Yellow 5, Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 2), DL-Methionine, Vitamin E supplement, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, Vitamin A supplement, manganese sulfate, niacin, Vitamin B-12 supplement, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, copper sulfate, biotin, garlic oil, thiamine hydrochloride, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, sodium selenite

Degenitive arthritis in back how bad is it?

Degenerative arthritis is a process in which the cartilage at the bone end in the joint starts breaking down slowly. This is due to absence of correct oil in the diet and calcium deposition in the bone joint. The process of degeneration starts after 20 years of age and goes on if the healthy diet is not consumed.

Amputation is generally done for traumatic injuries that would not heal properly, such as severe fractures, lose of large amounts of soft tissue, ongoing damage to the soft tissues due to nerve damage. It is also done for serious tumors of the leg that have not spread to other sites in the body. Arthritis so severe that a dog does not use the leg is unlikely without another underlying process going on, such as a deteriorated hip joint. An 11 year old large breed dog is already quite old, and likely has arthritis in other places than that one leg. This dog needs X rays and a veterinary examination with possible sedation to determine why she is not using the leg and what the best course of action would be for it. If the leg were amputated, there would be considerable pain postoperatively and considerably more weight put on the other legs, which in turn may become more arthritic. Also, this operation is a big deal, with long surgery time and possibility of significant blood loss. I wouldn’t consider it if she were my patient unless she had a bone tumor.

My dog has bad Arthritis in her back legs.?

Hi there. Sorry to hear about your Labs joint problems - it can be heartbreaking, but rest assure that it is not a death sentence. With help, they can remain relatively pain free throughout their lives.

First, do you have her on any joint supplements? if not, get her on a glucosamine/condroitin supplement as soon as possible. Cosequin is also highly recommended.

It is important to keep dogs with joint conditions as lean as possible. Not easy for Labs I know, but it is crucial to get any excess weight that might put pressure on the joints off. You want to keep her leaner than average and feel her ribs through a thin layer of fat. Seeing a hint of rib is good in dogs with joint problems.

Exercise is the other key factor. You want to keep harsh, repetitive exercises to an absolute minimum. That is things like long leash walks and hikes on hard surfaces. Shorter walks on soft surfaces, off leash if possible, and swimming are excellent types of exercise for dogs with joint problems. The more often you can swim her the better as it is non-weight bearing.

Feeding a high quality dog food will also help maintain her overall health.

Best of luck!

What is the best method in relieving arthritis in the lower back that causes pain throughout the legs?

Oh my Nikki, I am so sorry, because I know the exact pain you are speaking of.
Heres where this answer gets complicated and almost unbelievable........For 2 yr after I had MRI's done for the exact same symptoms I was told the exact same about the arthritis, by 2 differant doctors, an Orthopedist and a GP. As my leg and hip pain worsened I finally ended up in the ER, and was told by an ER Doc who saw my MRI on the hospital computer that I clearly had a herniated disc and it had herniated into my sciatic nerve. Mind you this is the only MRI I have ever had.
The ER doctor, told me that for some reason Orhthopedist don't like to diagnose disc problems like this because the don't like to do the surgery. The ER doctor called in a Neurosurgeon and I was in surgery the next day to remove the disc, which actually "blew up" it was so big. In the recovery room I felt 80 percent better, however, I am now on total disablity due to Permanent Sciatic Nerve damage. I have to go to Pain Mangement Clinic, and physical therapy and my life is totally and forever changed. I'm 43.
Please, Please, Please see a Neurosurgeon and have them look over your MRI. An arthretic back does not cause the leg pain you describe it is your sciatic nerve and I am sorry, I can't tell you anything to alieviate your pain that you aren't already doing except increase your pain meds temporarily. You needent worry about addiction rightnow with the pain you are in the meds go directly to the pain. As long as you take them as prescribed you have nothing to fear. If you don't you just may end up taking meds in the future and forever.
Feel free to E Mail me if you have questions and I honestly hope that you find relief for your pain soon, I know the misery you are in right now.
P.S. I would steer clear of any Chiropractors right now!!!!!

Maltese with Arthritis !? (10 POINTS)?

Arthritis is a degenerative disease - it is accumulative over time, meaning you would see it getting worse over a long period of time.

This is not arthritis. It could be a torn ligament, an abscess, sprain, strain, bruise, etc. Whatever it is, it is an injury.

Baby asperin is OK for SOME dogs in the proper does. I absolutely would NOT give it to your dog without your veterinarian giving you the correct dose, and specific instructions to do so. Giving it yourself could easily result in kidney/liver dz, or intestinal bleeds or...death.

The best thing you can do without seeking a veterinarian is heat therapy, but you should seek a visit as soon as possible.

The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis. One study found that a self-management course did little to improve pain for this, stiffness or physical function. A variety of exercises, such as strength training, aerobics, range of motion and tai chi, can help with both pain and physical function in knee OA. Strengthening can also help with hip OA pain. Water-based exercises may improve function in both knee and hip joints, but offer only minor benefits for pain.Besides, using a cane may reduce pain and improve function in people with knee OA. However, while it takes the load off the knee.Knee braces and foot orthoses helpful for reducing pain and joint stiffness and improving function in knee OA.Medications (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium) are another option for pain relief. For severe problem surgery may need to get rid out of the problem. Most people who believe their arthritis pain is affected by weather say they feel more pain in cold, rainy weather than in warm, dry weather. There are some research to support this arthritis-weather connection, when some studies fail to provide conclusive evidence.

I have a 14-year-old cat, and you might not believe this, but I started her on Veterinary Hemp supplements (weed w/o the THC).From the very beginning, they told me what to look for to show she was getting better, and they will even answer your questions via e-mail.It costs me about $30/mo or so, which I forgot to renew about 2 months ago, but it really works and I was pretty amazed. My cat doesn't like people food, so I would open the capsule and sprinkle the powder over her crunchies, and then throw some treats on top. Here's a link, you can tell them I sent you: Home - Canna Companion

My dog's legs is popping whenever she walks. Is it arthritis?

Audible popping/clicking is often the meniscus (cartilage) in a dog's stifle (knee), after it's degraded enough to rub on other joint anatomy and create a noise, the "meniscal click." Hips can also make a grinding audible noise with enough arthritis. Imagine not only inflammation of the joint (arthritis defined) but boney changes that are "craggy" enough and soft-tissue degeneration and reduced cartilage to the point your dog's femur and tibia are grinding on each other, or the ball of the hip is smacking into the socket without any cushion or shock absorption.

Many owners think their dog isn't in pain, because she's not whining, she's not bleeding, she's not dragging her limb behind her. I've had patients with limbs carried in complete flexion and abduction off the ground, and "he's been doing that for days but he's not in pain." Holding a limb up means excruciating pain. If they apply weight and step on that limb, it hurts. Our interpretation of animal pain is VERY limited.

If your girl has trouble getting up from laying down, slowly tries to sit and flex (bend) her knees to sit, can't gait normally on stairs (bunny hops instead of taking each step with a paw), or no stairs at all, or if she has limited mobility in the yard or on walks now she has likely developed arthritis. It's rare I've met a 9 year old large breed without arthritis. Toy breeds and smaller dogs sometimes take longer to develop arthritis. Some dogs have arthritis at 1 year age.

Try an exam at your regular DVM, emphasizing you want a full range of motion (ROM) exam and an estimate of her loss of range, as some vets don't routinely perform such joint exams. If you live near any rehabilitative practitioners they are extremely adept at gauging a dog's mobility and ROM. Xrays aren't necessary, but are recommended to diagnose any joint injury or disease.
