Does publishing look good on a college application?
Absolutely, but the type of publication will matter a lot. Publishing an article in a newspaper, or a poem in a large compilation? Pretty good. Self-publishing something? Not great - looks like no publishing house would accept it. Publishing a novel? That looks great, especially if it's best-selling (and some kids have managed that). Publishing an article in a journal? Also great, but the author order says what you did - first author is fantastic, last of 100 is OK but still pretty impressive for a high school student.
