Aside From The American Bulldog And The English Bulldog What Other Bulldog Is There

Is an American bulldog a pit bull?

No but a lot of people get confused about that.Pitbull is short for American Pitbull Terrier an American descendant of the Staffordshire and English Bull Terrier crossed randomly over time with Bulldogs. In fact the American Bulldog is a direct descendant of the original English Bulldog before they crossed Pug and various other toy breeds into it.Quite frankly the Bully breeds are becoming one of the preferred fad breeds and the genetic diversity between most lines is so great at this point you could make a case that they should be their own group as Sporting, Working, and Toy breeds. There are two different types of American Bulldog and a load of different Pitbull lines.Scott type bulldogs are more athletic hog hunting dogs with a lot of cur in their bloodlines. Johnson types are larger bullier guard dogs with St Bernard bred into them for size. Traditional game bred pits are usually heavy in cur and Staffy genetics. The new show oriented American Bully breeds even have their own club that recognizes multiple different sizes from Pocket Bullys clearly mixed with French and English Bulldogs to XLs which clearly have mastiff breeds like Cane Corso and Presa Canario mixed in. Add the half dozen or so breeds already officially recognized like Staffies, Bull Terriers, and AmStaffs and the generalized view of “Pitbull” referring to any breed that will catch falls apart.Alot of this confusion arises because a lot of working dog breeders openly detest organizations that emphasize show standards and conformation over working ability which often has a negative impact on the overall health of the dogs.

Can you mate an old english bulldog with an english bulldog?

A bulldog is the common name for a breed of dog also referred to as the English bulldog or British Bulldog. Other bulldog breeds include the American bulldog and the French bulldog. The bulldog is a muscular heavy dog with a wrinkled face and a distinctive pushed-in nose. The American Kennel Club (AKC), The Kennel Club (UK) and the United Kennel Club (UKC) oversee breeding standards.

The Olde English Bulldogge is a very new and rare breed developed by David Leavitt through the crossing half English Bulldog, and the other half: Bullmastiff, Pit Bull, and American Bulldog. In 1971 he became disenchanted with English Bulldogs due to their breeding and breathing problems. He discovered that they didn’t look like their ancestors who were healthier and less extreme. David's goal was to produce a dog with the looks of the 18th century bulldog, with the temperament of today's English Bulldogs, yet healthy, without breathing problems, or all the other aliments today's English Bulldogs are prone to. This new breed can now breathe. They will never be like hounds, able to run for miles during the hottest weather of summer, but they’re three times better than the restricted modern Bulldog. Cesarean section births are not necessary. Artificial insemination, due to male ineptness and lack of drive, has been replaced by natural ties. Life span is over eleven years. All breeding stock have had hip x-rays. No dog with bad hips is bred. David says he is now achieving his goal of producing a Bulldog with the health and temperament to be able to serve people, instead of forcing people to serve him. David Leavitt is breeding them to more of a working lines type dog, while OEBKC is breeding the dogs as more of a family oriented dog.

Can my American Bulldog puppy get along with my other dogs and cats?

I got an American bulldog puppy about three weeks ago. I have two other female dogs, one 11 year old golden retriever/English shepherd and a two year old Australian shepherd. Both are females. I also have two cats, both boys that are about 6 months apart (under 2). I have a male American bulldog who is getting fixed at six months (recommended by breeder) who is almost 3 months old. I have did my research on American bulldogs and found out that the gender choice will most likely be a good one, since from every website/person i asked said that an American bulldog will not get along with the same gender dog, regardless of breed. I am also aware of the fact that American bulldogs can potentially be a hazard to small animals like my cats, but if he gets close to them, they whack him, but he does bark and jump around within feet of them until they do. My oldest dog is a little aggressive and has put the puppy in his place, but the two year old lets him bite her and even nurses on her. She cleans his ears and eyes and everything. She loves him like he was her own, although she has bit him and tried to put him in his place. I am just very scared for the welfare of my other animals, knowing that these dogs have a bad reputation for attacking other dogs and animals. Do you think that he will be okay with them with proper obedience training and exposure to other dogs? Also, do you have any training tips for me or any other tips on American bullies?

What are the different types of American bulldogs?

The american bulldogs of today are direct decendents of the old english bulldog brought to america by immigrants in the 1800s. By the 1940s however the breed almost went extinct. Around then the breed was revieved by two different men alan scott and brian johnson. Johnson wanted bigger versions while scott wanted the more origional bulldog look of old england. They both gathered some of the last bulldogs off of working southern farms. Alan created the standard version and johnson created a bigger type called the bully by using abnormally bigger bulldogs that possibly were crossbred with other breeds to look bigger. Both men claim to have the more origional version but in reality scotts looks more like the old english bulldog.

Can an olde English bulldog breed with a French bulldog? If so, what are the health problems?

Most of the bulldog breeds already have problems with breathing.Besides that eye problems, elbow and hyp dysplasia is common in this breeds. They also have eye and Skin problems more often than less exaggerated breeds. Some health problems can occur for the weather as they are prone to die of too much heat or cold weather. You have to consider that as well. They cannot naturally breed and most deliveries are via c section.I would not breed a dog that suffers all it's life only because of my pleasure of certain characteristics that are unnatural. Please think before you bring a life in this world and don't breed for any exaggerated physical looks.

Is there a difference between the American Bulldogs and Pit Bulls or are they different names for the same breed?

The simplest answer is yes, there is a difference, most notably that pit bull dogs were bulldogs crossed with terriers. This was done to increase their agility and gameness. Both trace their lineage back to the Old English Bulldog. The American Bulldog was the result of breeding with other bulldog types in America. The pit bull breeds descended from the original cross between bulldogs and terriers…they were literally called Bull and Terrier dogs. From there, pit bull-type dogs branched in several directions, which has led to an absurd amount of confusion. In general, there are four breeds that are considered “pit bulls” in the U.S. these include the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT), American Bully, American Staffordshire Terrier, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Bulldogs are often mistakenly included in this breed grouping. In fact, depending on where you get the information, the term “pit bull” is used to describe anywhere from 4–30 or more individual breeds, not including mixes.

Are English Bulldogs particularly slobbery?

The english bulldog in america today is actually the result of mixing a Pit Bull type dog and a Pug together.

Do to the irregular face of the pug face, the english bulldogs are prone to breathing problems, eye infections/problems, eye scratches and dislodgement, skin infections in the folds (usually a yeast/fungus infections) and lips of the mouth that do not fully close. This will cause a considerable amount of drool in some of the dogs from this breed.

The english bulldog now suffers from a breeding program where looks outweigh the health and many dogs suffer from genetic health problems. Average life span is 8 to 10 years.
